1 g{x V{tÜÄÉààx XÇV{tÅtwx V{tÜÄÉààx V{tÑàxÜ AMERICAN GUILD OF ORGANISTS YÜÉÅ à{x Wxá~ Éy à{x WxtÇAAA OCTOBER 2011 \ write this on September 12, 2011 a day after we remembered, 10 years later, one of the most tragic events in United States history. As I sat through two very moving services of worship, I relived that morning 10 years ago as I drove to an organ lesson and a class in Greensboro for my Masters work. I heard the reports on Adam Ward, dean the radio, and felt that it must have been a joke. I stopped by my grandmother s house on the way and saw the television reports, including the live coverage of the second plane hitting the second tower. I was dumbfounded. I couldn t believe it was happening. I know we all felt that way on that day. I still find myself dumbfounded that human beings have such trouble getting along in our world. In our services yesterday, our relatively new minister challenged us to forgive and to not let unfortunate experiences define us but to live in love. It was such a juxtaposition to remember and relive those tragic events and yet to be challenged to forgive. Why in the world is he writing about this? I can hear you asking as you read this. I must say that in all walks of life, but especially in the life of the church musician, we are faced with challenging situations and people that require us to make a choice to forgive or not to forgive. Many of us feel that we have 1,500 or so bosses (depending on the size of the institution we serve). Or maybe we have met with an unfortunate or even unfair termination. I am aware that it is certainly not easy to practice forgiveness; but I find that I spend far less energy forgiving than I do as my grandmother would say stewing over an issue. Our world is full of darkness. I hope that maybe we, as individuals and as an organization, can work hard to shed some light around us to brighten the lives of those we encounter not only with our music, but with our whole selves! Adam Ward The purpose of the American Guild of Organists is to promote the organ in its historic and evolving roles, to encourage excellence in the performance of organ and choral music, and to provide a forum for mutual support, inspiration, education, and certification of Guild members. 4 Summer Recital Series 2011 Summer Series Breaks Records! The 2011 Summer Recital Series was a rousing success this year. We heard varied programs played (and sung!) by tremendous performers in wonderful spaces on wonderful instruments. There were wonderful crowds who attended the performances and appreciated all that was offered. We are most pleased to announce that we had a record-breaking year in offering receipts. Over the summer, we received $8, for the Stigall Scholarship Fund. This is unprecedented, and we are most excited about what this will mean for young musicians aspiring to learn the art of organ playing. Above: Matthew Brown, August 21, Myers Park Baptist Church Left: Michael Lehtinen and Janice Williams, August 14, Covenant Presbyterian Church The annual Summer Recital Series has again been a wonderful way to spend a Sunday evening of music. Thank you to chapter photographer Marty Dowling for taking these pictures. Check out the Summer Recital Series photo gallery on the chapter website s homepage.

8 Congratulations! Pipedreams Broadcast Change Patrick Pope has been named the new Director of Music at The Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter in Charlotte, where he will begin his duties on October 1. Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Monroe, NC, has recently contracted for a new Rodgers organ. Charlotte AGO member, Kathleen Prevost is the Assistant Organist. First UCC, Salisbury, NC, has contracted for a custom 3 manual Rodgers with 11 ranks of Ruffatti pipes. Are you an avid Pipedreams listener? Do you tune in on Sunday evenings for the vast and varied programs hosted by Michael Barone? If so, most likely you are aware that our chapter sponsors the broadcast from WDAV and that change has been made to the broadcast time on Sunday evenings. The program is now broadcast from 7:00 to 8:00 in the evening. We hold a great deal of responsibility for the proliferation of our craft each week to a large audience. Take the opportunity to tune to listen each week and to learn. For that matter, take a moment to send WDAV a note and let them know how much you appreciate their willingness to support our profession. The Charlotte Chapter AGO is now on Facebook! Look for us and give us a LIKE! Guild-of-Organists-Charlotte-NC- Chapter/

9 GREETINGS FROM YOUR REGION IV COUNCILLOR! I hope everyone had a restful and refreshing summer! Region IV was a busy place to be during the hot months of the year: a successful POE in Birmingham and an inspiring regional convention in Greensboro. Thanks to all that were involved in putting on these events... your work is noticed and deeply appreciated. Region IV does a fantastic job! For more information on these events, please check out the Region IV blog at: In my opinion, the strength of the AGO is in the local chapters and membership. Keep up the good work! Congratulations to Bryan Anderson, winner of the Quimby/RCYO competition held in conjunction with the regional in Greensboro. Six young organists competed let me assure you, the future of the organ is in good hands. I have already received a number of newsletters outlining chapter events for the year. Busy, busy. I hope everyone has a chance to participate in the myriad of concerts and workshops that are scheduled. Certainly, never a lack of things to do! This year, I plan to host district/state meetings throughout our region. Chapter Deans (or their designate) will be invited to a meeting to discuss questions, concerns, and share success stories. More news to come... Don t forget to put the national convention in Nashville on your calendar for July 1-6, National is in our own backyard, let s all be there!
