2 Consecration Address Sword and Trowel Council No th August 2016 San Francisco Scottish Rite By Edgar Fentum Most Illustrious Grand Master, Grand Officers, ladies and Companions. On behalf of Sword and Trowel Council I extend our sincere thanks to you and your Officers for the ceremony of Constitution and Installation. We also acknowledge that you, your Grand Recorder, three Past Illustrious Grand Masters, Grand Orator, Grand Musician, Grand Soloist and a Past Grand Master of California are also members of Sword and Trowel Council No. 65 of Cryptic Masons. We are indeed honored by such support. My thanks to of M.I. Past Grand Masters Williamson, Chesebro and MacDonald for their encouragement during the period this Council was being formed and to the members of this Council who have stepped up to assume roles as Officers and members. My appreciation and gratitude to another member of Sword and Trowel Council No 65 M. I. Companion Kenneth Hope H.P.I.G.M., Grand Recorder for his help and generous donation of the splendid Aprons worn by the Officers. Finally, my thanks to all present for your attendance at this historic event. Most Illustrious, Sir, I return the gavel of the Grand Council to your capable hands. Microcosm and Macrocosm (Reading time: Under 10 minutes) W. L. Wilmshurst states: Masonry is a veiled and cryptic expression of the difficult science of spiritual life. The Lodge is a Macrocosm of the world in which we live and described Masonically as a parallelopipedon in length from East to West, in breadth between North to South, in depth from the surface of the earth to the center and even as high as the heavens. Within the Lodge the individual is the Microcosm also symbolically describe as a reciprocal smaller space within the Lodge: Dug from the center - three feet East and West (6 ), three feet North and South (3) and five feet in depth(5). [6 x 3 x 5 = 90 sq. ft. Numerological reduction is = 9. A symbolic number in both Royal Arch and Cryptic Masonry.] Craft Masonry affords all the Moral lessons to make a good man better and presents Spirituality through the Supreme Intelligence which pervades all nature and will never, never, never die. However, it does not provide a path or guidelines to the celestial place of the Great Architect. The Royal Arch Chapter and Cryptic Council provides that path and symbolically explore the surface, length and depth of the Microcosm of our psyche. In Royal Arch Masonry, veils representing the four elements: Air (Blue), Water (purple), Fire (Red) and Earth (white) create a superficial Rite of Passage through the Material World. Beyond the white veil lies the Sanctuary where tools are presented to dig among the rubbish and explore the depth of the Microcosm. Removing the rubbish and entering deep into inner self is symbolic of introspection of the psyche. The superficial rubbish is discarded. The discovery of a sacred casket represents the human essence - Id or Ego. From the casket (our inner soul) we discovered the Book of the law FAITH; the Pot of Manna CHARITY and Aaron s rod - HOPE. These three Theological Virtues are the distinguishing characteristic of a Freemason and are carried through the Material World before they are placed in the Sanctuary on a pedestal so that it does not touch the ground. Thus, deep in the Soul is discovered Spirituality and placed where a connectivity with Deity can be attained. Con nued on next page. 2

3 Continued from previous page...consecration Address Sword and Trowel Council No 65 Cryptic Masonry exploration of the Microcosm is not just restricted to depth but the horizontal path of that space from West to East. A re-examination of Faith is represented by a beautiful piece of work. The delta is a symbol of the triune aspect of Deity that holds a sacred hallowed place within our very being. The symbolic perambulation past the Four Cardinal Virtues situated in the four corners and the most beautiful soliloquy in all of Freemasonry explores mortality. It provides Hope of an eternal life hereafter and that our integrity will go with us to be buried there! The Cherubim s represent the guardian against evil intrusion while we make our devotions to Deity. They also allow passage from the world of Formation to the worlds of Creation and Spirituality where we are presented as suitable to discover truth. The challenge and eventual passage along the horizontal path from West to East by way of Arches is symbolic of the triple essence of Deity as represented by the number Nine. It is the final Rite of Passage that leads to perfection and deification through a mystical experience. This Rite of Passage through the white veil is a re-examination of Faith, Hope and Charity, the Grand Omnific Word that completes the Circle of Perfection. Thus the exploration of the individual psyche as represented by the Microcosm (space of nine) as represented in the Craft is completed superficially, in depth and horizontally in the Cryptic Council and completes the Ancient Craft. Ultimate Truth can only be discovered when we pass the final veil and enter the presence of Him, who is the Way, the Truth and the Life. Wilmshurst states Spiritual qualities the ability to understand the Masonic system and reduce its implications into personal experience rather than the perfunctory conference of rites, are the desiderata of the Craft today. By looking beyond, the obvious moral symbolism of Masonry, we discover depths that enrich our Masonic experience. Edgar W. Fentum P.G.H.P., K.Y.G.C.H. 4 Companions, ANCIENT CHAPTER NO. 31, R.A.M. Second Thursday, Dinner 6:30pm, Stated Convocation 7:30 pm. For the months of January, March, June, September and December Pittsburgh Masonic Hall, 185 School Street, Pittsburgh, CA Attire: Red Coat I would like to remind all Officers and Members that our Stated Convocations are on the second Thursdays in the months of January, March, June, September and December. It is extremely important for all the Officers to be in attendance so that we have enough to open the chapter and conduct our business. Also we practice on the second Thursdays of EVERY month so as Officers you are expected to attend, if you cannot attend please remember to inform myself and our Officers Coach EC Joe Wies. Our Stated Convocation for December is on the 8 th and dinner will 6:30 pm at the time of printing the dinner menu was not set if you have a suggestion please contact me. This will also be our annual elections for the Officers for the coming Capitular year, if you have a desire to serve our chapter as an officer please let myself or our King Aaron Isaacson know of your desire. This past year as you know we did not have a Scribe and filled that position with PHP who were willing to help out. This we cannot continue if we hope to keep our Chapter moving forward. I plan to go back into the line as either King or Scribe for next year if elected and will serve as HP again if elected. It is my hope that there is enough desire among our Companions to keep this Chapter going and they will step up and take a spot in the officer line. Once again Ancient Chapter exemplified the Royal Arch Degree at this year s Fall Pilgrimage. I want to thank every one of the officers and members who made this degree possible! You all did a wonderful job and I know that our new Companions enjoyed it! As mentioned in the previous bulletin this year Ancient Chapter has been trying to put together both Mark Master and Past Master Degree teams. It is our goal to be able to exemplify these degrees in our Chapter so if you would like to be a part of these degree teams please review your ritual book and select a primary and backup role so we are able to have a solid and proficient team. Please also inform our Ritual/Officers Coach PHP EC Joe Weis of the parts you wish to take on. The East Bay York Rite Association meets on the second Monday of the month at Acalanes Fellowship Lodge in 7:30 pm. I would like to encourage all Companions to attend to find out what is planned for the East Bay York Rite Bodies. Also if you are unable to attend physically please try and join us via the conference call. Sincerely and Fraternally, Teddy L. Gardner, Jr. High Priest 4

5 DORIC CHAPTER NO. 66, R.A.M. Third Thursday, Dinner 6:30 p.m.; Stated Convocation 7:30 p.m. Pleasanton Lodge, 3370 Hopyard Road, Pleasanton, CA, Companions, October is almost here and Doric Chapter has been working on the Mark Master degree for the upcoming Pilgrimage in Alameda. I m glad to inform you that Doric Chapter has a candidate for the degrees. I wish to welcome Bro. Wen Chun to our Chapter. It is my personal opinion that when we get involved in educating our less informed brethren or new candidates, we have better and solid opportunities to share what we have learned in our search for Further Light in Masonry. To Companion Austin Rhee, who offers himself to coach new candidates at his particular lodge, thank you for all your efforts. Our degree team changed due to some companions not being able to participate this year, Companion Marion Rogers offered himself not only to learn the Senior Deacon s role, but also the Charge - thank you Companion for your efforts. Our chapter is having our traditional Christmas party on December 8 th 2016 at Cattlemen s in Livermore. Please mark your Calendars for now and make your reservations with our secretary EC Jerry Kaplan or myself. Looking forward to see you all. Sincerely & Fraternally, José M. Larin High Priest 5

6 Greetings Companions, OAKLAND COUNCIL NO. 12, C.M. Third Monday, Dinner 6:30 p.m., Stated Assembly 7:30 p.m. Alameda Masonic Hall, 2312 Alameda Ave., Alameda September Assembly was well received. All the promises of attending came true for may. A great meal was had by all cooked by Companion Marion Rogers. Thank you Companion. We all stood tall to receive our Inspector Illustrious Carl Brickner, for an annual visit. I hope he was pleased. The next step for our Council is the Pilgrimage in October at Island City Lodge in Alameda. And advanced stations in our line in November. Then Elections of new officers and a new year. A special thanks for Illustrious Mark Harris who coordinated the Super Excellent Master Degree in San Francisco on August 27 th. A lot of work indeed. See you at Council #12 in Alameda 3 rd Monday of the 6:30pm or as Illustrious Cleveland says 18:30. Best to all, Dennis Wallace Illustrious Master Companions of King Solomon s Council, KING SOLOMON S COUNCIL NO. 29, C.M. Fourth Tuesday, 7:30 PM Stated Assembly 101 Temple Way, Vallejo, CA I hope that when you are reading this article, you are in good spirits and in good health. This is my October message and it s always incredible to believe that my Cryptic year is almost complete. We have a couple of significant tasks to finish in this year s program and then prepare for the changing of the guard to Companion Milton and his new officers. Firstly, thank you to all who joined this year at the October 1 Council Pilgrimage which was hosted at the Island City Lodge in Alameda. Our council delivered the Royal Master Degree and took part in the Table Council later that afternoon. The Table Council is a relatively new addition to the Council day and I hope we can continue this rich tradition for years to come. The candidates enjoy the ceremony and have an opportunity to ask questions from other cryptic masons in the room Our October meeting is on the 25 th at the Naval Lodge Masonic Center in Vallejo. Light refreshments will be served at 6:30pm with the meeting starting at 7:30pm. Mark your calendar and attend because we need your support. Lastly dues notices will soon be sent out. Over the past few years, our council has been rebuilding our treasury so if you are able, please add a donation with your dues. Any little bit will go a long ways to keeping your council healthy. Fraternally, Anthony (Tony) Yuson, Illustrious Master 6
