2 Grand Council Cryptic Masons Sentiments from Richard W. Williamson, Most Illustrious Grand Master of the Illustrious Grand Council of Cryptic Masons of California My year as Illustrious Grand Master comes to an end this month when I will turn over the Grand Council of California to the very capable Deputy Illustrious Grand Master David Chesebro. Such transition is a part of our Masonic way of life. I hope I am leaving the grand officers a better Grand Council, as should be the goal of all Illustrious Masters. Is the Council stronger & better because I served? Have I served well by knowing my work & how to run the assemblies? Running a meeting is not easy & does not come automatically for me. It takes preparation, advice from others, & help from the Secretary. I trust that the Illustrious Masters of the 36 Councils in the Grand Council of California are coming into their assemblies well prepared to take care of business matters. Are your committees doing their work? Do you have something of special interest for the members to talk about, to listen to & to learn? Right now, I am feeling like the overanxious parent, what more could I have done? Enough of my parting angst: For me, with my wife Judy at my side, this year has been a wonderful adventure, meeting so many of you & knowing that the Companions of the Councils, for the most part, work hard & diligently at making their Council a success. I urge you not to forget that candidates for the degrees & a warm greeting to those men are essential for the continuation of York Rite. Note to Illustrious Masters: I took on a little survey early in April. I sent an to each IM. Four s were returned because the address was wrong. Nine answers to the survey were received. The nine who answered were all intending to be present at the Grand York Rite Sessions May Several said they had not received any of the previous four issues of Sword & Trowel. I have not yet followed up with the rest of you. Constitution Fact of the Month Did you know? Section It is the duty of a Council, when one of its members or any Cryptic Mason in good standing dies in its vicinity, to see that he has proper burial & to pay or assist in the expenses of a member who dies in financial circumstances requiring it. Parliamentary Hint of the Month: Remember that every motion, & amendment, must be made by a person who arises, addresses the chair, & is recognized. Then the motion must be seconded. The seconder need not rise, he merely says I second the motion. Don t forget that you, as Illustrious Master, must state (restate) every motion. The reason is that all will hear it alike & officially, & also to make sure that it is what was intended by the one who offered it. Then it can be discussed & amended. From the Officers Guide, Sec. 11,b. page 25 / read more about how to handle amendments. Sincerely and Fraternally, Most Illustrious Companion Richard Williamson, KYGCH, Grand Master Cryptic Masons Page 2 of 12

3 Proposed Appointment Companions: This is the last Sword & Trowel issue before our Grand Session on May 21 st. It is appropriate to inform you of the proposed appointment of our incoming Grand Sentinel. If I am elected to serve as Grand Master for the upcoming Grand Cryptic Year, it will be my pleasure to appoint Right Illustrious Companion Eduardo Estrada to the office of Grand Sentinel, the first office in the progressive Grand Line of Grand Council of California. Eduardo has served his country in the U.S. Army. He is a graduate of U.C. Irvine & holds a Masters in Public Administration from U.S.C. He has had a long career in telecommunication industry with AT&T. His assignments include leadership roles in the operational, engineering, design, & marketing functions of that company. He has served our fraternity in a number of leadership roles. He has presided over all four of our York Rite bodies in the San Fernando Valley area. He also served in leadership roles in the San Fernando Valley Scottish Rite & holds the distinction of being a Knight Commander Court of Honor in that order. He has served as a Grand Officer in the Grand Chapter RAM of California & is currently serving as the Grand Marshal of the South of the Grand Council. Eduardo lives in Calabasas, California with his lovely wife Natasha. They have been married for 30 years & have raised two beautiful & successful daughters. As you can see, Eduardo has a long history of service to his Country, family, company, & fraternity. If you know Eduardo, or see him in your travels, please greet him & congratulate him on his upcoming appointment. Sincerely & Fraternally, David L. Chesebro, Deputy Grand Master Cryptic Masons Cinco de Mayo While you are enjoying your margaritas, tacos, nachos, & flan, I would like to share with you a little bit of history regarding the celebration of Cinco de Mayo & its Masonic connection. First of all, Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day, as many believe. Mexican Independence was declared on September 16, The observance of Cinco de Mayo actually commemorates an historic battle, which occurred in Puebla, Mexico on May 5, 1862, between the forces of Napoleon III, of France who, by the way, detested the United States, & the newly inaugurated government of Mexico, under President Benito Juarez, Mexico s first indigenous president, & who was also a prominent Freemason. The French had landed in Mexico five months earlier with the intent of overthrowing the newly elected democratic government headed by Juarez, & establishing a French empire in Mexico as a response to the growing power of the United States, & concerns about its Monroe Doctrine America for the Americans. Napoleon III truly believed that if the U.S. was allowed to prosper, it would eventually become a super power-[where did he get that idea?] Although Abraham Lincoln was sympathetic to Mexico s cause, he was already embroiled in the American Civil War. The French landed in Veracruz with 8000 soldiers, fully equipped with the latest technological weaponry, & marched toward Mexico City. They subsequently encountered a relatively ill equipped group of indigenous resistance fighters, armed only with machetes, along with some regular Mexican soldiers led by General Zaragoza, approximately 4500 in all, at various forts in Puebla. The brightly dressed French dragoons led the enemy columns. [The Mexican resistance was much Page 3 of 12

4 less stylish.] At the end of the day, the freedom fighters were able the stop & defeat the French troops, Unfortunately, the victory was short lived. Upon hearing the bad news, Napoleon III, sent 30,000 more troops to Mexico & soon had Juarez & his forces on the run. Napoleon III, installed a prince of the Hapsburg s: Ferdinand Maximilian, who was also a prominent Free Mason from Austria, to rule as Emperor of Mexico. He was a Scottish Rite Mason, & Juarez was a York Rite Mason. On the one hand the French invasion force was supported by the Mexican aristocracy, many of which who were Royalists & Scottish Rite masons. The resistance was made up of Republicans who favored a democratic government, which included the separation of Church & State; a government similar to what they perceived was being enjoyed in the U.S. Many of the leaders of the Republicans were York Rite Masons. Fortunately, Maximilian s empire, from 1864 to 1867, was also short lived. With the American Civil War now over, the U.S. began to provide more political & military assistance to Mexico to help expel the French. Maximilian & his forces were subsequently defeated, & he was executed by firing squad, along with his generals. Today, Cinco de Mayo honors the bravery & victory of General Zaragoza s outnumbered militia at the Battle of Puebla in Although it has traditionally been a regional holiday in Mexico, it has become increasingly popular along the U.S.-Mexican border. In these areas, the holiday is a celebration of Mexican culture, of food music beverage & customs unique to Mexico. As usual, commercial interests have had a hand in promoting this holiday. In many areas, parades & concerts are held during the week leading up to May 5, so that Cinco de Mayo has become a bigger holiday north of the border than it is to the south. Only in America. 6 Illustrious Grand Master Itinerary May 8 th, 9 th, 10 th, 11 th Grand York Rite Utah May 18 th, 19 th, 20 th, & 21 st, Grand York Rite of California Sessions at Bakersfield For the latest schedule details: Council Day at the Races Oakland Council Daily Double Event of - Our Maiden Royal Master Degree Conferral and 2014 Day at the Races, at Golden Gate Fields Racetrack in Berkeley/Albany. IM Carl Brickner and his officers were faced with a dilemma. Oakland Council members wanted to host this year s Day at the Races event, which would be most extraordinary, as our Most Illustrious Grand Master Dick Williamson wanted to attend. We also had to attract a good attendance, which required offering a value packed day s entertainment for our Cryptic Council members and their families in the SF Bay Area. How were we to accomplish this? The answer came: Oakland Council would confer the Royal Master degree in the Bay View Lounge at GGF. The problem: we were used to conferring the Select Master degree, but not the Royal Master. No problem, IM Carl formed an Oakland Council Royal Master Degree Team, from scratch. IM Carl Brickner, IC Mark Harris, IC Jason Martinez, IC Cleveland Valrey, IC Loren Piper, and I joined on to complete the team, in January Team members had two practices and spent long hours in study getting the ritual memorized. We were finally ready for the event planned on March 29. I advertised the event widely to Masonic bodies across the Bay Area, and we expected about 47 attendees. The Bay View Lounge was set up by IC Mike Roberts, IM Carl Brickner, IC Mark Harris, and me the day prior. The room was sealed off from the public with curtains, panels, and window coverings and two doors were closed and locked. The area looked and felt like a Masonic Lodge room, with a vista view of the Golden Gate Bridge and SF Bay. We were ready. We had told everyone to be at GGF by 8:00 am. At 8:00 am the rain poured down from a gusty storm. Great. Now the question was how many would brave the weather and show up at so early an hour. MIGM Dick arrived, then all but one cast member. IC Mike Roberts was commandeered to fill the role of Hiram King of Tyre, at 8:15 am, and did a good job. More companions came and we had six Cherubim. Grand Captain of the Guard Hank Clayton was commandeered to be Prompter and Chaplain thanks Hank! We opened in Ample Form, thanks MIGM Dick! The degree for Companions Jose Larin, Marion Rogers, and Chan Eason began. Our maiden performance was close to perfect, and each team member excelled. IC Mark Harris gave an emotional performance as Hiram Abif. IM Carl Brickner looked out on the rainy but beautiful vista in front of him, and the words flowed as if from his heart. IC Jason Martinez led the companions around a small Page 6 of 12

7 altar area with ease as Conductor of the Council. I did well at the Captain of the Guard. This was a truly beautiful performance, because everyone was prepared and motivated by the new environment. Eventually nearly all 47 attendees showed up, and the day got better when the rain paused. We were dry for our huge Winner s Circle photo after Race 2, with 17 in the picture! The Buffet Luncheon, the best in the area, was delicious and filling, as usual. I crave their soup, yum. My barn tour of my racehorse trainer Ellen Jackson s barn in the backlot was attended by all the kids and their parents, as well as some companions. We saw and stroked two of the thoroughbreds that had raced that day. The kids also liked the barn cats and goat, Barney. That was a day they will remember. IM Carl Brickner stated One of the most memorable moments for me occurred during the conferral of the Royal Master degree when I rose from my station in the East to head down to the altar. Seeing our three candidates in due form about to take their solemn obligation as Royal Masters and gazing out over the view of the Bay in the background behind them - the Golden Gate and Bay Bridges and San Francisco off in the distance. It was a truly awe inspiring sight. Meeting my fellow companions assembled around the altar, the sense of fraternity, genuine friendship, there at that moment. It was absolutely wonderful. I had a great time and feel an immense amount of pride in our Council's degree work that day.
