3 Companions, Rewarding My first month as Illustrious Grand Master has been busy and rewarding. Busy because of my travels and responsibilities and rewarding because I have the honor of being you re representative as I go on these travels. In June I went to receptions in Shekinah Council #35 and Ventura Council #51, a fundraiser at Butt Council #50 in Chico and an Ish Sodi award and meeting at King Solomon Council #29 in Vallejo. In all Janet and I were welcomed like family and had great food and fellowship. We are looking forward to traveling and meeting as many of our family as possible the rest of the year. I also want to hear what is working and what help I can give to concerns when I visit. I want to see us prosper and grow and I need your input to accomplish this. I also visited Oregon Grand Communications to see my old friend Most Worshipful Art Borland installed; Nevada Grand York Rite Sessions in Las Vegas, and the Job s Daughters Convention in Visalia, Ca. At Nevada, I had the honor to represent California Grand Council, with our Grand High Priest Rick Baskin, KYGCH and Grand Commander Steve Alderete, KYGCH in being the only Grand York Rite to be represented by all three Grand Officers from one state. I also was privileged to meet with the Grand Masters from Oregon and Nevada and the Deputy Grand Master of California, John Heisner. I had a great opportunity to discuss Masonry from three leaders on many concerns and found that we have many similarities and few differences, a real opportunity I was very lucky to have. At the Job s convention I was introduced to the concerns of our youth orders. One bright spot was to learn our Job s in California is growing and very enthusiastic. One big concern is Scholarships offered by our Masonic Bodies are not being fully taken advantage of. We, as a group, need to visit all our youth groups and promote these scholarships and to help them as adult leaders. These young people are our future and we need to be their examples. All the information you need should be right there. This is a complete manual that you can download that talk about all of the scholarships available from the California Masonic Foundation as well as the Scottish Rite, York Rite, Eastern Star, High Twelve, DeMolay, Job s Daughters, & Rainbow for Girls. Humor A Cryptic Mason was telling a fellow Cryptic Mason about the trouble he was having with his ritual. His friend said he knew a Companion down the road who sells parrots that know the ritual and then prompt you when you have any trouble. So the next day off he went to the shop. After strict examination, the owner pulled a curtain to reveal three parrots. The first was wearing an Illustrious Master's apron, the second had on a Cryptic Masons apron, and the third bore a Grand Council Cryptic Masons Illustrious Grand Masters apron. "How much is the one with the Illustrious Master's apron on?" "$ He knows all the ritual including the inner workings, and will always prompt you when you get stuck" "No, too expensive! What about the one with the Cryptic Masons apron on?" "Well, that one is only $3,000. He doesn't know the inner workings, but knows all the ritual and will always prompt you when learning." "No, still too much I'm afraid. What about the one wearing the Illustrious Grand Masters apron?" "Oh, I can let you have him for just 10 bucks!" "Why so cheap? He must know all the ritual and the inner workings?" "Oh yes, he knows all the ritual alright. But when you make a mistake all he does is sit there and mutter 'Tut, tut, tut!'" 8 Cryptic History Since we have a Sword and Trowel Council, U.D. Charter presentation let s see what our ancient Companions did when they chartered a new Council. And the first item I learned while reading was that the word Charter was not used but the statement Consecration of a New Council was used and is actually the name of the ceremony. Only the first part of the ceremony will be used in this article as the Ceremony or Consecration is quite long. Remember our ancient companions considered not just a charter presentation but actually Sanctification, Dedication, Blessing, or even a Beatification. The new council, as read, always assemblies in its chambers!!! The New Council will assemble in its chamber, and open on the Select Master's degree. The Grand Officers will meet in an adjoining room, and on being notified by a Committee of the new Council that its members are ready for their reception, they will proceed to the Council Chamber, where, being received by the new Council with the usual honors, the officers of the new Council will resign their stations to the Grand Officers, and cause their jewels to be laid on the altar. The ceremonies of Consecration will then commence, as follows: Anthem Prayer: Most holy and glorious Lord God, the Grand Architect of the Universe, thou who governest the world in the secrecy and silence of thy omniscient counsels, and who showest mercy unto all who trust in thy holy and ineffable name; we invoke thy benediction upon thy purposes of our present assembly. May this Council be established to thy honor, and Consecration to thy glory; may its officers be endowed with wisdom to discern and fidelity to pursue its true interests, and may its members, remembering that they have been chosen as a select band to preserve for the Craft that Divine Truth which is the Foundation Stone of all Masonry, be ever mindful of the duty which they owe to thee, the Eternal Builder, the obedience they owe to their superiors, the love they owe to their equals, and the good-will they owe to all mankind. Glory be to God on high. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. So mote it be. Amen. An appropriate Oration may then be delivered by the Companion selected for the purpose. The Grand Marshal will then form the new Council in front of the Most Puissant Grand Master. The Illustrious Deputy Grand Master will then rise and say: Most Puissant Grand Master, a number of Companions, duly instructed in our sublime mysteries, being desirous of promoting the honor and propagating the principles of our Art, have applied to the Grand Council for a warrant to constitute a new Council of Royal and Select Masters, which having been obtained, they are now assembled for the purpose of being constituted and having their officers installed in due and ancient form. Most Puissant. Let the Warrant of Constitution be read. The Grand Recorder reads it. Most Puissant Companions, do you still approve of the officers as named herein? Companions We do. Most Puissant By virtue of the powers in me vested, I do form you, my beloved Companions, into a Regular Council of Royal and Select Masters. Henceforth you are empowered and authorized to open and hold such a Council to initiate candidates therein, and to do and perform all such things as may there unto lawfully appertain; conforming in all your acts to the landmarks of the Order, and the Laws and Regulations of the Grand Council from which you have obtained your Warrant. And may the God of your fathers be with you, guide and direct you in all your doings. Response: So mote it be. Amen. The Stone of Foundation, represented by the Altar with the Substitute Ark upon it, having been previously covered with a linen cloth and placed in the center in front of the Most Puissant, is now uncovered, and the dedication proceeds. 9 The Grand Chaplain, with a pot of incense in his hand, says: To our Most Excellent Grand Master, King Solomon, we solemnly dedicate this Council. May the blessing of Him who presides in the Grand Council above, descend and rest upon its members, and may their felicity be immortal. Glory be to God on high. Response: As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Music The Deputy Grand Master then presents the Thrice Illustrious of the new Council to the Most Puissant, saying: Most Puissant Grand Master! I present you Companion, nominated in the Warrant to be installed Thrice Illustrious of this new Council. I find him to be skilled in the Royal Mysteries and zealous in diffusing the sacred principles of our fathers; and one in whose integrity and fidelity his Companions repose the highest confidence. The Most Puissant then addresses him as follows: Each of the officers of the new council are installed and charged Grand Marshal: "In the name of the Most Puissant Grand Council of the State of California, I hereby proclaim Sword and Trowel Council Number 99 to be legally constituted and consecrated, and the officers thereof duly installed with the Grand Honors of Masonry, by three times three." The Grand Honors * are then given. The following or some other appropriate Ode or Anthem should be sung: Now the work is completed and all are combined, To close in the secret and deep-hidden cell The words which are treasured as light to the mind, Like the waters of truth in their close-covered well. Here, safely secured, they shall live in the rock, When the storm rages o'er it and levels the wall, And still in the rage of the conqueror's shock, The arches shall neither be shaken nor fall. We have laid in its secret and silent retreat The treasures that kings shall exult to behold; And the pilgrim shall hasten with ardor to meet This gift, valued higher than jewels or gold Entered according to act of Congress, in the year 1847, by A.
