THE UPDATE Hey kids! Bring your family,!iends and neighbors to the big parking lot at the church on Ha"oween evening, and lets go trunk-or-treating! Thursday, October 31, 6:00-7:00 p.m. Attention all LFMC adults! This is a great way to reach out to families all over Lawrence. Let s all open our hearts (and trunks), and give the kids in our town a great evening that they will remember forever! We ll need plenty of open trunks for kids to visit, but it s not necessary to provide a vehicle if you would like to participate. We d love to have people standing or sitting around the lot, passing out candy as well. If you would like to be a part of Trunk-or-Treat by donating your time, vehicle, or candy/treats, please contact Leslie Sharp at lsharp@lfmchurch.org. Men's Fraternity Men being involved in a community of men is key to our spiritual development, making it over the long haul as husbands and fathers, and living a life that has impact! Every man needs other men encouraging him on his journey to authentic manhood. Having other men around you helps you gain a better perspective on your life. Others can help you discover your blind spots and avoid costly mistakes. We all need men in our lives who will be honest with us to help us become better men. And sharing life with a community of men makes the great times feel like a celebration and provides much needed support when life gets rough. If you are interested in getting connected, Men's Fraternity is a great on-ramp! The new THE STORY continues! Check our resources page at lfmchurch.org/thestory theme for Men's Fraternity this year is A Man and His Traps. There is a great need for men to rise up and be the men God calls them to be. A Man and His Traps is based on Authentic Manhood: 33-The Series. A Man and His Traps will equip you to handle some of the major dangers we will face as men. We will learn how to leave a legacy of eternal significance, integrity, and a great name! We meet weekly on Thursday mornings at HyVee on 23rd Street, beginning at 6:00 a.m. and finishing promptly at 7:15 a.m. Guys, this is a great deal and will be well worth your time and investment! The cost is $25 for the 6 weeks of sessions. Cost includes a training book, videos we will view and process together, juice, coffee, and breakfast rolls. Start-up date is October 17 and ending date is November 21. Men's Fraternity is open to all. Please feel Continued on next page... Blended worship (nursery and pre-school care provided)! We are locating this out in the community so that your unchurched friends will feel more comfortable. For more information, contact Pastor Larry at lbaldridge@lfmchurch.org or find more online at authenticmanhood.com. Primetimers Nineteen members, one guest, and our speaker enjoyed a wonderful potluck meal on September 10. There was a clarification made during the meeting: it is no longer required that members bring their own table service. Plates, silverware, and cups will be provided. After the wonderful meal our guest speaker, Elizabeth Stephens, was introduced. Elizabeth is the current Mrs. Lawrence, Mrs. Kansas, and the Director of Family Services at the Lawrence Community Shelter. DISCIPLESHIP MINISTRIES ADULT MINISTRIES Equipping men and women to walk with God, make disciples and serve Christ for a lifetime Elizabeth had just finished competing in the Mrs. America Pageant in Tucson, Arizona. She shared with us how she became involved in the contests and how this fits into her job at the shelter. Her job responsibilities include dealing with families who are homeless and need to stay at the shelter. She works closely with Family Promise, as well. One of the things the shelter is currently doing is working to build a playground for the children who live there. This includes raising money for the equipment, and building the playground after the equipment has been purchased. (It was suggested that at a future date, our group may wish to tour the shelter.) Our next meeting will be October 8 at the church. It will once again be a potluck meal. You will need to bring a main dish, and a salad or a dessert, unless it is your first time to attend. If it is your first time, you will be our guest, and just bring your appetite. Our special speaker will be Steve Novak, Executive Director of the Watkins Museum. His topic will be "The Early History of Lawrence." If you are 50-or-better you are invited to attend. If you have questions about Primetimeers, call Ernie Dyer at CONTACTING THE UPDATE The UPDATE is a monthly publication of the Lawrence Free Methodist Church. Letters to the church ("thank you" notes, etc.) may be dropped in the UPDATE box in the church office, or ed to update@lfmchurch.org. The deadline for the November issue is October 28, The online version is at PAGE 2
Fun at the Fall Kickoff September 22 saw a beautiful afternoon and a lot of fun on the church lawn. The Fall Kickoff was a blast! An entertaining afternoon of games, laughter, socializing, and music by KREW and the LFMC Praise Band. And, while the staff was denied victory in the final round of the dodgeball tournament, they and the other teams had a lot of fun playing! Thank you to all who came; we hope you had a wonderful afternoon of relaxation and fun with friends and family! To the 100+ Fall Kickoff Volunteers, THANK YOU! Whether you served an hour or all day, helped with prepwork or taking tickets, at a table or on your feet, and everywhere inbetween the Fall Kickoff simply could not have happened without you! Thank you for making the Kickoff a whole lot of fun! Photos (clockwise!om top right): dodgeba" kids; facepainting fun; picnic tables and conversations; scaling the rock wa"! PAGE 3

Worship time starts at 9:00 a.m. that day downstairs in the Teen Center, and we start quiz rounds right after that. The focus of the trip will be to serve the Kids Alive staff in Haiti by getting to know the children they work with and building the fifth home in their compound for ten to twelve children and their house parents. The deadline for signing up for the trip is October 15, Registration packets are available in the church lobby. Questions? Contact Pastor Carolyn at cheacock@lfmchurch.org.! PAGE 6
Keep Lawrence Warm Outerwear and TWIN BLANKETS accepted through October 27 Many adults and children in Lawrence struggle during the winter months because they are unable to afford proper cold-weather attire. For the fourth year, our church is providing warmth to help those in need through our Keep Lawrence Warm Campaign. This year we are collecting new and gently-used twin blankets for the Lawrence Community Shelter, as well as new and gently-used coats and other types of outerwear like jackets, scarves, hats, gloves, and mittens. Donations will be accepted October 6-27 and should be placed in the collection area in the outer lobby or brick hall. Let s take to heart John the Baptist s challenge to those who have two coats to give one to someone who doesn t any. Let s work together this year to Keep Lawrence Warm! Thank You! The Arts & Crafts Fair, Sept 21 and 22, was wonderful. What a collection of arts, crafts, and goodies, and what a crowd! Thank you to all who donated and to all who shopped for making this event a success and raising money for Missions. Next LINK Service Date Thursday, November 7 Our church will be serving at LINK (Lawrence Interdenominational Nutrition Kitchen) on Thursday, November 7. If you would like to provide food for the meal or serve, please sign up in the church lobby starting October 20 or Pastor Carolyn at cheacock@lfmchurch.org. A Shoebox Can Change a Child s Life Operation Christmas Child (OCC), a unique project of Samaritan s Purse, enables caring people to share God s love with hurting boys and girls in the far corners of the globe. An ordinary shoebox filled with toys and other presents can become an extraordinary one-of-a-kind gift for a child in need of joy and hope. Most importantly, these shoeboxes provide wonderful opportunities to tell children and their families about the greatest gift of all Jesus Christ. OCC delivers about 8 million shoeboxes supplied by people like you to needy children each year. Before delivering them, OCC includes a booklet explaining the gospel message in the child s native language. Three ways you can participate Participating in OCC is such an easy way for individuals and families in our church to bless others and fulfill the Apostle Paul s instruction to be generous and willing to share (1 Timothy 6:18). Continued on next page! PAGE 7
1. Pack a shoebox. Please stop by the Operation Christmas Child table in the lobby November 3-17 to sign up. Shoeboxes need to be returned by Wednesday, November Give a cash donation. If you would prefer to give a cash donation so we can buy supplies for boxes or pay for shipping for boxes, please put leave your donation in the offering can at the Operation Christmas Child table. 3. Donate supplies to be packed. You can leave donations at the OCC table in the main lobby. Whether you choose to pack shoeboxes, give a cash donation or donate supplies, your participation in this project will provide hope and joy to needy children in other parts of the world. Thank you for sharing Christ s love with them! Are You Receiving LFMC s? Gmail users: recent changes in the Gmail user interface have complicated things a bit for organizations who communicate with their members via . If you recently opted to use Gmail's new interface, you may have several new inbox tabs (Primary, Social, Promotions, Updates, and Forums) into which your incoming messages are sorted. messages that are sent to groups (such as many of those sent by LFMC through our Church Community Builder service), are often routed automatically to the Updates inbox, where you might miss them, unless you check all of your inbox tabs regularly. If you don't check your other inbox tabs regularly, you can "teach" Gmail to send LFMC s directly to your Primary inbox, if you like, to make sure you see them. To do this, simply click on the Updates tab (or the Promotions tab, or whichever alternate inbox your church s are currently being delivered to), find a message from LFMC (or ccbchurch.com) and drag it to the Primary inbox tab. Gmail will prompt you with a question ("Do this for future messages from?"); if you respond by clicking "Yes," future messages from LFMC will appear in your Primary inbox. Just to be clear, you don't have to do this to receive those messages. Of course, if you like the way Gmail organizes your incoming , you don't have to do a thing. But please remember that sometimes important announcements could end up somewhere besides your Primary inbox. Sermon audio online There are three ways to hear Pastor Bill's sermons each Sunday: 1. Attend one of our Sunday services (this is the best). Naturally, we hope that you will commit to being in church every Sunday, and to make that a family priority. But we understand that there are times when an absence is unavoidable, and in those cases, you can order a CD or cassette tape of the sermon at the Media kiosk ($1 for a tape, $2 for a CD), or listen online (for free!). Continued on next page! PAGE 8
Listening online is easy, it's free, and you can do it any time or any place where you have access to the Internet. Simply point your Web browser to and click on the link in the right sidebar labeled "Messages." This will direct you to a page containing several weeks' worth of recent sermons. To listen, click on the title of the message you wish to hear. This will take you to the message player page. Click on the player bar's "play" button (the little triangle pointing to the right), and the message audio will play. You can also download the audio file using the link below the player bar; this will allow you to share the file with others or save it for use on an ipod or other MP3 player. Feel free to burn the audio file to a CD if you wish. If you need assistance or have problems listening online, feel free to contact Doug Heacock, LFMC Director of Media. And of course, if you would rather purchase a CD or cassette tape, we will be glad to help you. To play a sermon, click the sma" arrow in the player bar (under the words "Audio file" in the picture at le(. Continued on next page! PAGE 9
