2 Meet Our Pastoral Intern About Kristina. I am going to be a Junior at Fort Hays State University in the fall. I am 20 years old and have lived in Wilson, KS for most of my life. My home churches are the First Presbyterian and United Methodist Churches in Wilson. Our churches are yoked together so we have one service that is blended to accommodate both religions. I have been very involved in church activities since I was very young. The first college I attended was Baker University for one and a half years but, due to my father having surgery and being disabled I moved home to help out any way that I could. I worked last summer as a Traveling Vacation Bible School Intern for the conference, which led me to being called to go into ministry. Working for the conference this last summer opened my eyes to how many internships there are and led me to this internship. More about Kristina What are three things you cannot live without? He was like another dad to me when I was growing up and he passed away when I was young in a boat accident. What is the best advice you have ever received? 3 Church Life Vacation Bible School Preparations Wednesday, June 3 rd and June 10 th 7:00 p.m. 9:00 p.m. Come help cut, paint, label, gather and prepare as we get ready to welcome over 200 children to our G-Force Vacation Bible School this year! We will meet in the Upper Room at 7:00 p.m. Please feel free to come and go as you like. Great Plains Annual Conference June in Wichita, KS Please keep the Gatelys and Valley View s lay members to Annual Conference in prayer as they travel to Wichita for the 2015 Session of the Great Plains Annual Conference. All Church Potluck Monday, June 22 nd 6:00 p.m. 8:00 p.m. Fellowship Hall Join us as we gather together for fellowship, sharing and prayer with our youth and youth leaders as they prepare for their time in Orlando at Y15 and serving in the community of Daytona Beach during their week of growth and mission. Bring your favorite dish, main, side, dessert or one of each with you. We will provide table service and drinks. This special time together will close with a prayer and blessing for us all as we continue to be a Christ-centered community, sharing God s love during this week and every day. Beyond the Book Club June 23rd The group will meet for an organizational meeting and a salad potluck, lead by Carri Whitaker. Church Life Job Opening Valley View UMC Weekday Ministries is currently looking to hire dynamic and talented Lead and Assistant Teachers for our full time day care. National CPR and AED Awareness Week June 1-7 is National CPR and AED Awareness Week. According to the American Heart Association, 90 percent of people who suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrests die. CPR, especially if performed immediately, can double or triple a cardiac arrest victim s chance of survival. The Wellness Committee invites you to visit to learn the two easy steps you can take to help save a life. 4 United Methodist Men United Methodist Women Monthly Meeting Saturday, June 20 8:00 a.m. We are looking for a few (or many) good men, as the U.S. Marines say. If you are up to the challenge plan to attend the June 20th meeting of the Valley View United Methodist Men (VVUMM). It is the annual outdoor meeting in the park held in June of each year. We will begin with breakfast at 8:00 am (not the usual 7:30 am start). Reverend Nancy Pauls, former pastor of our church, will be our guest and speaking on Leadership Through the Lens of Moses' Journey. Page 4 Adult Sunday School United Methodist Women Circle Meetings Hope Circle will meet on June 2 nd, at 6:00 p.m. at the church for a salad supper and a book review of the Orphan Train Go to valleyviewumc.org for additional meetings later this month. Donations Needed! One of the ministries of United Methodist Women is providing clothes for women when they are released from the Topeka Correctional Facility. The biggest need is for neutral colored pants with more colorful tops that the women can wear for jobs and daily life (nothing fancy ). They need large, X-large, and all the X s more than small and medium sizes. They need purses that are clean and lightly used and light jackets this time of year also. When the weather cools they will need winter coats - short and washable are preferable. Due to space constraints at Lawrence First UMC (where these items are stored and supplied to the prison) they can t take underwear, hosiery, belts, or shoes. Word was received recently that due to over-crowding at the prison, fifty women were being granted early release so the need for clothes is great. 5 Children s Ministry Evening Care G-Force Vacation Bible School: June 15-18, 9:00 a.m. 12:00 p.m. There is still time to register your child, grandchild, niece or nephew and their friends! Register online at Vacation Bible School Donations We are committed to providing the children of our community a meaningful Vacation Bible School experience at no cost to the participants. We strive to keep our expenses low, but rely on donations from the congregation and individuals to fund our program. Please consider making a donation today! Mark your check or cash donation VBS and place it in the offering plate or drop it off in the church office. Summer Sunday School This June, our children will be Splashing into God s Word! We will be focusing on Bible stories where water is part of the story! Join us each week as we explore, play, and learn! During the 10:30 service, after the children's message in service, children will be dismissed to their Sunday School. Children who are in Kindergarten, Pre K or Preschool will be in room 107 and our elementary children will be in room 108. These rooms are located straight out the Sanctuary, passed the library, in the children s hallway. We will continue to offer our caring nursery for children age 6 weeks 3 years at both the 9:00 and 10:30 services. We had a very musical May! We celebrated Cinco de Mayo a couple days late but enjoyed a nacho dinner and music by Los Musicos. The American Sign Language Choir brought popular music interpreted by signing. We enjoyed playing Name That Tune with Maggie Rodgers and a sing-along with the Kansas City Women s Chorus! Children s Mercy Hospital was the recipient of the proceeds from our cookie sale in May. We are looking forward to our June activities! Starz Sunday School continues their study of Strong, Bold Words. They meet each Sunday at 9:30 am in room 40. All are welcome! 6 Join us and take a look at what Wednesday, June 24 Thursday, July 2, 2015 is going to look like for our 22 youth and 4 adult leaders: Our week of personal and faith growth starts off with 4 days in Orlando, Florida at the Y15 national gathering. We will be joining approximately 6,000 United Methodist youth groups and their leaders from around the world. This national gathering only happens every four years. While there we will participate in acts of piety and mercy (means of grace). Our youth and leaders will be inspired through speakers, workshops, activities, and service, all carrying a distinctively Wesleyan and United Methodist tone. We will carry this with us and Go On to experience, do and share. And that is exactly what we are going to do immediately as we head to Daytona Beach, Florida for the next four days to serve right alongside the staff of YouthWorks. Our acts of piety & mercy will be shared in this community of seniors, children, people who are homeless or in transition, and adults with special needs. We will work with the partners that YouthWorks has committed to serve with on an ongoing basis. Their goal is for us to join these partners in communicating love and hope in their Daytona Beach community. Our time with YouthWorks will also be learning about our Upside Down Kingdom. They want to help our youth think about not doing the big things, instead focusing on the smaller things. Small things that are more meaningful because they are part of something bigger; something so big it began two thousand years ago when a King who looked like a commoner proclaimed a Kingdom was coming. We recently spent time together with our youth preparing our minds, bodies and souls for our time in Florida. While with them we asked, On July 2 nd, when someone asks how your Mission trip week was, what is one word you hope to be able to use to describe it?
