1 bible story Bartimaeus Shouts to Jesus 2a Jesus and his disciples are walking through the city of Jericho. A large crowd gathers. People are calling out to Jesus and trying to get close to him. One voice is heard over the noise of the crowd. Jesus, Son of David, show me mercy! The shout is from Bartimaeus. He is sitting in total darkness, beside the road, begging. His eyes are closed because he can t see anything. He is blind. He is begging for money from the crowd, because that is the only way he can support himself. People from the crowd shout at Bartimaeus, Be quiet. Don t bother Jesus. But Bartimaeus shouts out even louder, Son of David, show me mercy! Jesus hears the call over the noisy crowd and stops. He surprises the crowd by saying, Bring him to me. Then the crowd s attitude towards Bartimaeus changes. They excitedly call to Bartimaeus, Be encouraged! Get up! Jesus is calling you. Bartimaeus immediately throws off his coat, jumps up, and makes his way to Jesus. The crowd is quiet now, waiting to see what Jesus will do. Again Jesus surprises the crowd with a question. Bartimaeus, what do you want me to do for you? He humbly replies, Teacher, I want to see. Jesus boldly responds, Go, your faith has healed you. Bartimaeus opens his eyes and sees everything around him. He can t contain his joy. He shares the miracle with the people around him. As Jesus leaves Jericho, Bartimaeus follows him. 4 2d Acts of Mercy activity Matthew 25:35-36, 40 I was hungry and you gave me food to eat. I was thirsty and you gave me a drink. I was a stranger and you welcomed me. I was naked and you gave me clothes to wear. I was sick and you took care of me. I was in prison and you visited me. I assure you that when you have done it for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you have done it for me. Feed the Hungry. Take a meal to someone in your community who is seriously ill or welcoming home a newborn. Shelter the Homeless. Volunteer to do manual labor to help in the upkeep of a homeless shelter. Give Drink to the Thirsty. Take a cold glass of water to a neighbor doing yard work. Visit the Sick. Send flowers or a card to someone you know who is in the hospital. Clothe the Naked. 5 activity Clothing in Alaska 2e Rule #1: Layer! Rule #3: Mittens over gloves Inner: Wear a mid-weight to heavyweight wool or synthetic base layer that fits snugly to your body. Absolutely no cotton! Wear a top and a bottom. Insulating: This layer should be a bit looser; wear a mid-weight fleece or pile jacket. Top only. Outer: A down or synthetic down parka is important to top it all off. If you are actively moving about, you may only need the first two layers. But in temperatures below 0 degrees, you ll be glad to have this final layer. For bottoms, choose waterproof snow pants that have additional insulation to add to the warmth of your long underwear. Rule #2: Invest in warm winter boots or at least buy toe warmers Purchasing boots rated at -20 to -40 degrees is a good idea. If you already have a pair of boots but are concerned they won t be warm enough, toe warmers can usually make up the difference. Warm fingers are as important as warm toes. Mittens are the best choice because they keep your fingers together and trap heat more effectively than gloves. Hand warmers are good to have on hand if you need some extra heat. Rule #4: Hat + balaclava (a knit cap for the head and neck) A great combination in cold temperatures is a hat paired with a balaclava, a knit cap for the head and neck, that will cover your nose and cheeks. Keep those ears covered to avoid frostbite! Rule #5: Keep the snow out with gaiters If you anticipate wading in deep snow and don t want it to get into your boot, try gaiters. They re worn over your boot, cover up to your mid-calf or knee, and are held in place with a drawstring at the top and a strap underneath the boot. What reason would the crowd of people have to tell Bartimaeus to be quiet and not bother Jesus? How do you think the people in the crowd felt when Jesus spoke to Bartimaeus?
