1 A&enngfury for Mock, L/Iflu(*, Mf,uk, Iilf,ck,lvlng fimilies VolumeVlll. No. 1 Winter 1999 John Mock of Mock's Bottom Portlnd, Multnomh Co., Oregon Submitted by Jx Zumwlt As Mock descendnt, I wondered how n re in Portlnd OR becme known s "Mock's Bottom". As it turned out ohn Mock built home on the bluff which is now on the historic homes register here in Portlnd. Prt of the frm lnd behind the house is now city prk. ^ The lnd below the bluff on the Willmette River is known s Mock's Bottom. It ws the min ship chnnel to the Portlnd docks.the siling ships hd hrd time negotiting the tight curves under the bluff nd the chnnel ws eventully strightened, by pssing Mock's Bottom. MocKs Bottom ws eventully filled in nd is now the home of llge indushil complex. As high school student I prked on Moc-r"s Bottom while working in the Henry j. Kiser Shipyrds in WWtr. Lter I worked for nother employer for bout 25 yers on "Swn Islnd", djoining Mocl(s Bottom. FromHistory of Oregon Vol.2byPioneer Historicl Publishing Co. 7922,p8s.7$ 1739 &740, I found wht I hd been looking for. lohn Mock ohn Mock ws born in Mechnicsbury PA 4 Oct His prents were Henry nd Elizbeth Mock, ntives of Germny, who cme to Americ nd settled in Mechnicsburg. In 1&14 the fmily moved to Pltte Co., MO nd there the fther purchsed 40 cres trct of lnd upon which he resided until 1852, when they left by wgon trin to Oregon, rriving in Portlnd in October of tht yer. The following spring Henry took up dontion dim of three hundred nd seventeen cres in the district now known s University Prk Neighbors ssisted them in building their first log cbin which continued to be the fmily home until ]ohn styed on his fther's frm, helping in the tslcs of dering developing nd mking improvements. At the ge of 18 he strted out independently, devoting the next sixyers to mining nd the opertion of pck trin. John's mother, Elizbeth died in His fther returned to Germny nd wsrobbed of llhehd.fohn sved for two yers to bring him bck to Portlnd. john hd purchsed the property belonging to his fther. Henry mde his home withhis sonuntilhis detht ge of ninety-one yers. On the 46 of August, 1874, John Mock ws united in mrrige to Miss Mry M.Sunderlnd dughter of Benjmin nd Elizbeth Sunderlnd who cme from Iow. ohn nd il4fy hd the following children: Elizbeth who mrriedjohn B. As the yers pssed Mr. Mock sw gret chnges in the district in which he resided. For long period there ws no rod betweenst. fohns nd Portlnd nd the produce ws crried to mrket by bot. Tody it is lnost impossible to tell where the one city ends nd the other begins, such hs been the extension of Portlnd's boundries. Mr. Mocklwys rejoiced in whtws ccomplished in the wy of development nd improvement. He lived to see the Willmette Boulevrd built long the Willmette River pst the beutiful residence which he erected. He did much towrd grnting lnd for boulevrd purposes nd ws most generous contributor to vriouskinds of publicdevelopment. Columbi University received its splendid cmpus s the result of his interest in eduction nd he lbored ernestly towrd developing the street rilwy system in the peninsul. I worked with the grndson of )ohn nd Mry Mock Yeon. He lived s boy in the beutiful Mock Mnsion overlooking Swn Islnd nd Mock's Bottom. tsn C-ontinueil on Pge 4

2 2 Mock Fmily Historin Volune Vlll. No. 1. Winter eefutk l/refl&hr, Lst issue, on the subscription renewl form, I sked for queries nd suggestions for future issues. Here re some of the responses. "soldie/' George descendnt I so much enjoyed the publishing of dditionl findings of dughter of fohnnesvlentin Mck, son of Alexnder Mck, Sr. discovered by Ron Moore nd published in VoL VII, No. 4 Flt 1998, p.49. This is PRE- CISELY why I subscribe to this newslefter! I m so excited to find dditionl reltives of Alex. Mck Sr. tht hve been previously undocumented by Freemn Ankrum nd/ or undocumented t the BrethrcnArchives in Elgio IL. As descendnt of George Mock (whom I originted the term "Soldier/' Geo. Mock, becuse our fmily hs his hndwritten Rev. Wr Dischrge, nd cnnot seem to prove who he is descended from), my cousins, Florence Kuhn Glssini, Venit Hurr Foster Herbert nd I serched extensively through fmily legend tht "Soldiey'' George Mock is descendnt of Alexnder Mck Sr. We followed much info in legl deeds, wills, etc., migrtion ptterns, followers of Alex. Mck Sr., whose surnmes still occur in every residence re the descendnts hve lived nd old photos of mny of our reltives still wering the old Germn Bptist brethrcn/ Dunker/Tunker/ Church of the Brethren grb. Everything circumstntil nd legl fits the fmily legend of descendncy, however we could never prove or deduce which line. I hve lwys felt there were missing lines nd wish the mle descendnts hd been trced more thoroughly. This discovery shows tht there is much work to do in Alex. Mck Sr.'s lines, nd it ppers one must spend muchtime in ech migrtion loction doing individul work to further discover dditionl lines nd info. On Alex. Mck Sr's. descendnts. Our reserch on "Soldiey'' George Mock's Rev. Wr service ws both exhilrting becuse we were ble to pinpoint his regiment nd tour of service in gret mount of detil, which correlted to the fmily legend, nd ws confusing becuse the Dunkers were pcifists. I would guess there re severl of us who would love hering more of Alex. Mck's descendnts. I hve ccumulted tremendous mount of mteril on severl of his known descendnts just to eliminte lines other thn ours. I do not hve computer or e-mil nor the time t this stge of my life to sort through nd submit the info., but gret del ws obtined from interviewing cousins nd looking t theirprvtely held documents, county records, LDS records, individul uto trips to PA nd OH, Newberry Librry in Chicgo nd the Brethren Archives in Elgin, IL I urge you to forwrd yow rticle on Dughters of Johnnes Vlentin Mck to the BrethrenArchives, s this ws importnt info for them. Mrs.lcqueline A. KuhnWons 22L N. Penn St., Hobrt, TN M342 'MFH hs come long wy since I first subscribed. With the help of "Fmily Tree Mke/' which shows loseph Mock mrried to Elizbeth Ruddell. It is believed tht foseph ws son of Rudolph Muk whose will is dted 14Apr 1817 Bourbon Co., KY nd Ctherine Ulrich. There ws no dte given for oseph's birtb but Elizbeth ws born 23 August The mrige of josephmock nd Elizbeth Ruddell is given s 12 Mr 1811 in Bourbon Co. Their five children listed re: 1. There re two ]oseph Mucks in Estill Co. KY (pg. 101), but I don't believe his identity hs been determined. Elizbeth ws the dughter of mes Ruddell nd )ne "]ennie" Mulherin Ruddell widow of Cornelius Ruddell who ws the son of Cptin Isc Ruddle. mes Rudde[ born 20 August 1758 in Shenndoh Co., VA. ws son of Archibld Ruddell who ws very prominent pioneer nd frontiersmn in the Shenndoh Vlley. He ws the officer in chrge of regiment which induded four Muck boys in Frederick Co., VA in the erly 176Us nd this ws one of the erliest references to sons of Rudolph Muck (I) which included Dniel, Rudolph (II), Henry nd Richrd (Wehve notbeenble to identify Richrd). The Ruddell's lived ll over the Shenndoh Vlley but owned property in Rockinghm Co., not fr from where Rudolph Muk II lived before moving to Kentudcy Territory in1787. Archibld Ruddell ws lso the fther of Isc Ruddell who estblished Ruddell's Fort in the re tht lter becme Bourbon County, KY. This is one of the most interesting stories of the Revolutionry Wr; how the British led by Generl Byrd, cme down from the Detroit re, which ws then prt of Cnd, nd broughtcnnons nd otherhevy rtillery overlnd nd by bot. They even mustered lndins to help nd mde surprise ttck on the Fort nd one or two other fortresses in the re, nd took mny of the inhbitnts prisioners, induding women nd children. Mny were mrched bck to Detroit which ws over 500 miles. Some were killed nd the buildings were burned nd destroyed. Isc's son, Stephen ws cptured by the Shwnee Indins living in the re of Chillicothe, OH t the time. He ws dopted by the fmily of Tecumseh nd ws bout the sme ge s Tecumseh. They grew up together nd in lter yers fter being relesed to returnto hisfmily inky,he continued to be friendly with the Indins nd mintined contct withtecumseh. This is one of the few inlnd skirntishes tht occurred on the Frontier during the Revolutionry Wr. The Mocks nd Ruddells werle dosely ssocited in Rockinghm Co., VA s well s Bourbon Co., KY. There were quite number of Rockinghm Co., VAfmilies tht ll left round 1787 to settle in the Bourbon Co. re. These included the Custer, Ruddells, Birds, Humbles, Muks, Cines, Kipplingers nd mny others. Mny of these fmilies intermrried with our Mocks. There re members of the Mock discussion group on the Internet s well s our editor, Brbr Dittig who re fortunte to be descended from such prominent pioneer nd frontier fmily sthe Ruddells. Brbr's ggg grndmother ws Din Ruddell, dughter of George Ruddell. She mrried George Mock 20 Aug. 1,817 in BourbonCo. George, bornlt94bourbon Co, ws son of fcob Muk nd Mry '?olly" Pyne. fcob ws son of Rudolph tr. nd Ctherine Muk. Little is known bout the joseph Mock fmily nd further reserch could help der up some of the mny questions still unsolved bout the Mocks of Kentuclqy nd where they went from there.
