June 3, 1998 I contcted Mrs. John Plth Green on April 9, 1998, seeking her permission to reproduce her lte husbnd s 1956 compiltion, nd His Descendnts. Mrs. Green grnted me permission nd provided little insight s to why the book is so difficult to locte. Only 200 copies were printed; two seprte printings of 100 copies ech. A few copies (mybe five) went to librries; the reminder were sold or lost when her home ws flooded I m truly thnkful for Mrs. Green s permission to reproduce this book. I doubt tht the reproduction of this book will mke gret mny people hppy, but I believe it will mke very smll number of people very, very hppy. A specil thnk you lso gœs to Susn Cbniss Brdford. It ws Susn tht stood in front of copy mchine mking me copy of her book from which I worked. Thnk you, Susn. My originl pln for this project ws to duplicte the text s written, correcting ny errors detected. As the project progressed, I begn correcting the obvious typos nd inconsistencies, but the more I fixed things, the more I begn to question my pln. Ultimtely, I decided to duplicte the text s found in the originl, errors nd ll. After ll, just who m I to decide if something is right or wrong, especilly since I didn t write it nd the uthor is not round to guide me? Wht ppers in error to me my not pper incorrect to you, or it my indeed pper incorrect to both of us, but my choice of correction my differ from your choice. So, I decided to leve things unchnged nd not muddy the wter, llowing you to mke your own decisions. Accordingly, the reder is cutioned on severl points s follows: Obvious punctution nd typogrphicl errors hve been left s I found them; missing periods, unmtched prentheses nd quottion mrks re

just s they re in the originl. Apprent typos were not chnged. For exmple, on pge 51 where the descendnts of Henry Cly Cbniss (ccdd-g) nd wife Cor Rtcliff re listed, one child is detiled s son of Henry Cly Cbniss (ccdd-g) nd Cor Trcliff. The reder will notice other such typogrphicl errors.) Some confusing coding of descendnts exists, e.g., follow the coding of Permeli Cbniss (ccdf-e, pge 41) nd her descendnts through severl genertions. Other exmples re there to cite, but this one illustrtes my point quite well. There re some pprent inconsistencies found in the book. For exmple, the plce nmes Indinhom nd Indihom re used in the book, but I m not sure if they re intended to be the sme plce. If they re indeed the sme plce, I hve no ide which one is the proper spelling. Also, Green explins in the introductory section, Key to Index System, tht fmily s children re ssigned letter in the order of birth. Well, not lwys. See pge 11 where bd Mry Cbniss (b. c. 1748) is listed before be John Cbniss (b. c. 1742). The ct of reproducing the book my introduce errors tht result from my proof reding s filure to ctch the opticl chrcter recognition softwre s inbility to properly interpret the scnned text. While I ve mde every effort to ctch these errors, I m humn nd know tht I mke mistkes. If text in the originl ws underscored, I mde it bold font fce unless it ws text tht should be itlicized (nme of book, etc.) Pge numbering the originl work contins no pge numbers, but I hve numbered these pges to mke working with the book little esier. Originlly, I plnned to provide n index to include descendnts of the immigrnt Cbniss, s well s those mrrying them. While I my prepre n index in the future, reders cn use Acrobt s find function to serch for nmes.

Despite the cutions enumerted bove, John Plth Green s nd His Descendnts is vluble id to ny one working on the Cbniss genelogy. Although the book is intended primrily to be record of the descendnts of (ccd), the book, when used in conjunction with Allen Cbniss Cbniss Through Four Genertions: Some Descendnts of Mtthew nd George, provides the user with solid bse on which to begin work on the Cbniss genelogy. If the reder questions whether n item is s published in the book or simply the result of my filure, plese contct me. Jœ Cbniss numbers@stx.rr.com P O Box Sn Antonio, Texs

INTRODUCTION The enclosed biogrphy of descendnts of, the Huguenot who fled Frnce in the Seventeenth Century, is bsed on informtion obtined from court records in Virgini, from extrcts from The Virgini Gzette, Bible records, newspper clippings nd personl memory of descendnts now living. It is intended primrily to be record of the descendnts of (ccd) who migrted to Shelby, North Crolin, bout 1806, the descendnts of whom meet nnully in Shelby for their fmily reunion. It is the pryer of the compiler of this informtion tht other members of the fmily whose nmes re omitted nd who re descendnts of the originl will furnish informtion in order tht lter publiction will minimize these omissions. The guide to the letter-system is explined in seprte portion hereof. It is felt tht the guide will fford redy reference from genertion to genertion nd t the sme time will permit the inclusion of dditionl biogrphies s they re obtined. If ny of the informtion contined herein is found to be incorrect, the compiler would be grteful for such informtion.

KEY TO INDEX SYSTEM Individul fmilies hve been emphsized in the preprtion of this record. For the convenience of the reder, the nme of ech direct ncestor is plced t the beginning of ech fmily record. The indexing system is quite simple once it is understood. Ech member of the fmily is given letter of the lphbet beginning with () in the order of birth so fr s we hve been ble to scertin. The letter () hs been ssigned to, the originl immigrnt. His nme, therefore, is written: () () hd three children. We list them in the order which they pper in his Will. The first child is Henry. For his identifiction, he crries his fther s letter (). As he is pprently the first born in the fmily, he lso is ssigned the letter, hence, his identifiction symbol is: (). Mtthew Cbniss ws the second child mentioned in () Will. His code identifiction is: (b). ws the third nd lst child mentioned in the Will of Henry Cbniss (). His code identifiction is: (c). It my be seen t glnce, therefore, tht Henry (), Mtthew (b), nd George (c) belong to the second genertion of the Cbniss fmily in Americ, s ech hs two letters in his code. (c) nmed four children in his Will. These we hve referred to by nme nd code s follows: Mry Ann Cbniss (c) Srh Cbniss (cb) (cc) Jemimh Cbniss (cd) A glnce t the nme (cc) in the index will indicte to the sercher tht his biogrphy should be serched for in the third genertion. Unless mistke hs been mde, no two persons should hve the sme code number.

The code number permits sercher to trce the ncestry of the holder. The code further ffords redy method of determining kinship; for instnce, in the eighth genertion, we find the following two persons: Mry Gordon Elliott (ccdc-dfg) Robert Smith Rudsill (ccdf-gi) It ppers, therefore, tht the first common ncestor is (ccd). By counting genertions bck to the common ncestor, we determine tht both persons re members of the fifth genertion, inclusive, from the common ncestor. The first genertion is the common ncestor himself, nd the second genertion comprises his children who re brothers nd sisters. Therefore, the two persons nmed bove pper s third cousins. A rpid method of clcultion is to count bck, inclusive, to the common ncestor nd subtrct two. Sometimes the genertions re stggered, such s: George Turner Cbniss (ccdf-gg) Allen Hugh Cbniss (ccdf-beb) The first is member of the eighth genertion, nd the second is member of the ninth genertion. We strt with the eighth genertion nd count bck four to the common ncestor. When we subtrct two, we discover tht the two persons re second cousins. But one of them is member of the ninth genertion. To indicte their reltionship properly, therefore, the term once removed is used. This mens tht the two bove persons re second cousins once removed. In the event tht the second person ws member of the tenth genertion, such member of the tenth genertion nd the bove member of the eighth genertion would be second cousins twice removed. The pges of this record re not numbered, s the use of the code index number mkes the numbering of the pges unnecessry.

First Genertion of the Cbniss Fmily in Americ left London, Englnd, in 1700 bord the good ship Mry nd Ann bound for the mouth of the Jmes River in Virgini in prty of 205 persons, men, women nd children, in serch of religious freedom nd politicl snctury in the new world. He hd with him t tht time his wife nd one child of tender yers nmed Henry. The Mrquess de L Muce, Sir Oliver of Nntes, Frnce, ws in chrge of the prty ssisted by Monsieur Chrles de Silly. The prty rrived t the mouth of the Jmes River on July 23, 1700, fter thirteen weeks pssge. Attempts hve been mde to locte description of the ship which brought the group to Virgini but s yet ll ttempts hve been unsuccessful. Considering the size of the prty nd hving in mind the fct tht only one-fourth of the ship ws reserved for pssengers, it would be sfe to ssume tht the ship ws lrge one probbly three or four msts. The Cbniss fmily originted in Frnce. Shortly fter the revoction of the edict of Nntes in 1685, the fmily ws forced to flee to Switzerlnd, where lrge cnton of french refugees collected in wht is commonly known s french cnton of Switzerlnd. Henry shortly therefter mde his wy to Rotterdm, Hollnd, in compny with seventy-four other refugees. There the Mrquess de L Muce pid his pssge nd expenses from Switzerlnd to Rotterdm nd from there to London, Englnd. The following extrct is tken from report tht Governor Frncis Nicholson of Virgini mde to the British Lords of Trde on August 12, It is set out herein s the fcts re fscinting: The 24 th of the lst month, I hd the good fortune of receiving his M y s Royl Commnds of Mrch ye 18 th, 1699, sent me by your Lord p, concerning the 1700 Mrquis de l Muce, Mons r de Silly, nd other French Protestnt Refugees; nd I beg to leve to ssure yo r Lord p, tht s I hve, so I will endevor to obey them (they were on bord the ship Mry nd Ann, of London, George Hwes, Commnder, who hd bout 13 weeks pssge, 1

First Genertion nd the 23 d of the lst month rrived t the mouth of this river), nd upon receipt of them, I immeditely went down to Kickotn, to give directions in order to their coming hither, some of wh. cme on Sundy in the evening, the rest the next dy. I wrote to Colo. Byrd nd Colo. Hrrison to meet them here, w ch they did, nd we concluded tht there ws no settling them in Norfolk nor therebouts, becuse esteemed n unhelthful plce, nd no vcnt lnd, except some tht is in dispute now betwixt us nd No. Crolin; So we thought it would be best for them to go to plce twenty miles bove the flls of Jmes River, commonly clled the Mnikin Town. There is gret del of good lnd nd unptented, where they my t present be ll together, w ch we thought would be best for his M ty s Service nd Interests, nd tht they would quickly mke settlement, not only for themselves, but to receive others when his mjesty shll be grciously plesed to send them. They my be prejudicil to his M ty s interest nd Service, vist., by living long together, nd using their own lnguge nd customs, nd by going upon such mnufcturers, nd hndicrft Trdes s we re furnished with from Englnd; but ccording to duty, I shll endevor to regulte they ffirs, nd when, plese God, the Council meets, I shll ly before them the mtters relting to these Refugees. On Tuesdy I mustered them, nd No. 1 is copy of the list of them. Colo. Byrd went before them in order to meet them t the Flls of this river, where he formerly lived, to dispose of them therebouts, till they cn gett housses or sheds in the plce for their Reception, nd he promised to go long with the Mrquis & Mons r de Silly to show them the Lnd. The people t present seem to be well effected towrds them, nd to commiserte their condition, nd some who hve seen them hve given them money, viz: Colo. Hrrison, 5 ; Mr. Commissry Blir, the like sum. The Reverend Mr. Stephen Touie, therebouts; Mr. Benjmin Hrrison, 5 ; Mr. Attorney Generl Fowler, something s likewise; Mr. 2

First Genertion Willim Edwrds, Merchnt of this plce. I m pt to think tht Severl Gentlemen nd others will be chritble to them. They went from hence yesterdy. If his mjesty be grciously plesed to send over more, I humbly propose tht Mr. Micjh Perry, merchnt of London, my be spoken with bout their pssge hither nd tht they my hve their pssge on bord the Ships which come to the upper prts of Jmes River, w ch is the nighest plce to their settlement, nd tht there my not bove 40 or 50 come in ny one ship; so they my be better ccommodted in ll respects, for I hve observed tht when the ships tht come into these prts re crowded with people, tis very prejudicil to their helth; some getting sicknesses, w ch not seldom prove ctching, some dy on bord, nd others soon fter they come on shore. F. Frs. Nicholson (Endorsement). The Gov r of Virgini 2 Aug., 1700 R 21 Octob. Accounts of proceedings there, etc. The refugees were trnsported to the site of the deserted villge of the Moncn Indins. This tribe of Indins ws the sme to which the fmily of Pochonts belonged. The erliest reports stte tht the first ship (of which ws member) were settled between the Moncn nd Powick Creeks which rn into the Jmes River bove the flls. The settlers rrived too lte to mke ny crops for their winter provisions. As consequence their conditions were very poor. A lrge percentge of them died during tht first fll nd winter nd the reminder suffered for lck of bed clothing nd food. Mny complints were mde by the leders of the Jmes River settlement to his Mjesty the King outlining in detil the bominble conditions under which they suffered. An ttempt ws mde t first to congregte the re- 3

First Genertion fugees in one plce, forbidding them to leve without the permission of the locl uthorities. A locl government ws estblished under the ledership of Monsieur de Silly. Complints were registered ginst de Silly becuse of the hrdness of his hert in crrying out the politicl orgniztion of the group. For one thing he refused corn nd provisions to the refugees lnding in the second ship unless they took n oth of llegince to the Justices of the Pece which he hd ppointed. Evidently took dvntge of relxtion mde by the Council whereby the refugees were permitted to leve the settlement nd live on djoining plnttions in order to ern their livelihood. This conclusion is reched becuse of the records of the colony contining no reference to fter his rrivl. He evidently went to the plnttion of the Epes fmily s they grew to be gret friends. The next record tht we find is in 1709 when he received grnt of 200 cres in Henrico County, Virgini. We do not know how long he retined titlte to the lnd. No mention is mde in his will of it nd the items listed in his inventory t his deth re devoid of ny reference to frm implements to indicte tht he lived frmer s life. On the contrry the best conjecture is tht he mde his living s goldsmith. He loved to ply the violin nd he hd one in his possession t his deth. Henry is vriously reported s hving mrried womn by the nme of Mrie. This would be the one who ccompnied him to Americ. It is vriously reported tht she died sometime shortly fter the rrivl in this country. It is considered tht he mrried Mry Hrrison bout She ws of the fmily of the Hrrison s of Jmes River. Credence is given to this fmily legend in tht his son,, ws the Cptin of the Sloop Betty, owned by Colonel Benjmin Hrrison. At the time George ws only in his erly twenties. Henry () hd three children: (), Mtthew Cbniss (b), nd (c). The descendnts of who lived in Rutherford County, North Crolin, re the descendnts of this third son nmed George (c). died bout His undted will ws probted in Prince George County, Virgini, on August 9,

First Genertion () ws very religious mn. He gve up his fortune nd friends in Frnce becuse of his religious convictions. The depth of his convictions re exemplified in the beuty of his will which is set out s follows: In the Nme of God, Amen. I, Henry Cbnis of Westover Prish in Prince George County being sick nd wek in body but by the blessing of God in perfect sence mind nd memory, but clling to mind the uncertinty of this mortl life, nd desirous to settle the smll estte it hth plesed the Almighty God to bless me with in this world, do mke constitute nd Ordin this my Lst Will nd Testment, revoking nd mking void ll other Will or wills heretofore by me mde, first nd principlly I commend my Soul into the hnds of Almighty God, who gve it, begging prdon for my sins, through Jesus Christ our Lord, nd my body to be buried ccording to the discretion of my Executor or executors hereinfter nmed, nd s for my Worldly goods I give nd bequeth in mnner nd form following s Viz: Imp. 14 First Genertion (s it is contined on the other side) of Henry Cbnis in presence of us. Drury Bolling John Fitzgerrld Ir Epes, Junr. It is true tht some of the erly wills followed this generl form of Henry s will. But this is not ny reson to lessen the conclusion tht Henry ws person of deep religious conviction. The Mrquis de l Muce ws member of the Reformed Church in Frnce. It is quite logicl tht Henry ws lso member of tht belief. These erly French refugees to this country re generlly referred to by the nme of French Huguenots. Authorities Brock, R.
