2 Please note that our meeting planned for October 23 will actually take place on Tuesday 24, not at GoTafe but at the Children s First Foundation Farm [formerly Moira Kelly s Children s Farm] at 190 Saunders Road Kilmore East. This will be a joint meeting with Southern Mitchell and Euroa Clubs. The cost will be $25 per head with all proceeds going to the foundation. A bus will be arranged from Seymour leaving from the Rotunda opposite the police station at 6pm. A BBQ style meal with salads will be provided but members are encouraged to bring a sweets plate. Meeting October 30 - CENTENARY OF THE BATTLE OF BEERSHABA. The Rotary Club of Seymour is delighted to have the privilege of Honor Auchinleck speak at our Rotary Club on Moday 30 th October 2017.Honor has investigated the history of the Light Horse where her grandfather, Sir Harry Chauvel played an important part. This year is the centenary of the Battle of Beersheba which took place on 31 st October 1917, and was a turning point in the First World War. The Light Horse played an important part in Seymour s and the surrounding areas history. Several local boys were members of the Light Horse during the First World War and others joined the Light Horse as members of the Citizen Military Forces (CMF) between the wars. Puckapunyal also houses the Light Horse Museum. The Light Horse became the Armored Corps during World War 2. Honor is also a member of the Chauvel Foundation. Her mother Elyne Mitchell wrote the Silver Brumby books as well as military books. Her father Tom Mitchell was a prisoner of war in Changi and then became a member of State Parliament and her husband comes from a well known British military family. Members are encouraged to bring partners and guests. Please advise Ralph Baker of your intentions as soon as possible for this very special presentation. ooooooooooooooo Our sergeant Martin Raby brought our meeting to order and invited IPP Ruth Byers, standing in for President Ron, to open our meeting. Ruth welcomed our special guest John Gribben. Our invocation was delivered by Jacqui Brauman and Xenia Williamson provided our loyal toast including toasting the Rotary Club of Jerusalem. The clubs local projects include providing school meals for the poorest of children from all communities, modernising equipment at a home for severely disabled children and a project collecting musical instruments to teach talented and gifted handicapped children. The meeting was handed to our chairman PP David Freeman who called for reports : FROM OUR PRESIDENT, COMMITTEE CHAIRS and ROTARIANS New Generations chair Jane Challis advised that we now had a proposed RYLA participant and that the application process would proceed. Jane also advised that the National Youth Science Forum dinner would take place this Friday night. Jane thanked Alison, Xenia and Paulette for participating in this week s reading program.

3 Foundation / International chair Hugh Lawrence reminded us that the Foundation was formed in 1917 with an initial contribution of $17, equivalent to $500 today. From these humble beginnings the Rotary Foundation has grown in to one of the largest philanthropic organisations in the world. Sue Goette advised that she had taken responsibility for the Ladies Day Out function which would take place on 12 November. The cost will be $75 per person including lunch. The bus will leave at 6.30am from the IGA carpark and will pick up in Kilmore and Wallan. Please contact Ruth Byers to book your place. ooooooooooooooo The topic from our special guest speaker this evening, amateur historian, John Gribben, pictured with Ruth and Chairman David, was Cultures in Central Victoria an enlightening look at the cultures that we may not be aware of as we travel through central Victoria. John commenced his presentation with a pic of his church in Kialla West which unfortunately will close in the next 6 months or so and progressed to a trip through Shepparton and surrounding areas: Alabanian Mosque, Shepparton. The oldest mosque in Victoria it services 400 local families where interestingly men and women pray from separate areas of the facility. Iraqi Mosque, Shepparton. As well as locals many travelers visit this mosque to pray and mix with likeminded people. Sikh Temple, Shepparton. A Punjabi based temple where all funds raised to build the temple were raised from cash donations as there is a tendency amongst the Punjabi people not to use banks. Afghan Mosque, Shepparton. This Mosque opened in 2014 and services families from the surrounding areas. As a religion persecuted by ISAS the freedoms the area offers are greatly appreciated. Turkish Mosque, Mooroopna. The second oldest Mosque in the area this facility is a little more elaborate than many with the local Mufti paid for by the Turkish government. Jewish Synagogue, Shepparton. Operating between 1911 and 1965 Richard Pratt attended this Synagogue and is now remembered by a monument on its original site.

4 St Anthony s Coptic Monastery, Heathcote. Established by the Christians of Egypt this significant facility is very tightly secured because of persecution in its homeland. Bendigo Stupa. This Buddhist Temple, currently under construction, is a place of worship and convalescence. Once completed it will house the largest jade Buddha in the world with the jade being extracted from Thailand. It is expected to be in place in May next year. The temple has had millions of dollars poured into its construction and will be completed in the next 12 months or so. The Stupa is located around 5 kilometers from Heathcote. John indicated that in most cases it is possible to visit all these facilities, with the possible exception of the Coptic Monastery, however it should be understood that in many cases the English language may not be spoken. In some cases meals will be supplied to those in need, as their religion dictates. ooooooooooooooooo Sergeant Martin immediately fined Jane for bailing out on her date and Chaddy was got for his recent holiday. Tony Lee put money in the kitty after his rip Van Winkle effort of sleeping in for the business breakfast and Fred was fined for turning up twice for the same event. Although she always offers to think about fines Xenia was fined for never actually offering one. And finally Ruth was fined for white anting Ron back into the Presidents seat. October is Economic and Community Development month.
