5 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time REFLECTIONS By Bishop Christian During a college prayer group, a student commented: I gain hope when I read stories about people who put God and the service of others first. I want to do the same. That s what our two widows do in today s readings. The widow of Sidon offers the hospitality expected in a culture without convenience stores or fastfood restaurants. Elijah asks for a small cake to feed him before she feeds herself and her son their last bits of food. She does. She puts Elijah and the God he served first. Her generosity was blessed by her food lasting for a year. The widow in the Gospel, giving from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood (Mark 12:44). She put God first, unlike those who are rich and the scribes. They put themselves first. Both stories offer hope. When we put God first, sacrificing what we have out of love for God and God s people, we find blessing, even in the midst of poverty. When we put ourselves first, we might gain attention for a while, but it doesn t last. Christ the high priest put God and puts us first. He offered himself to God at the cost of his life. According to the prayer attributed to St. Francis of Assisi: It is in giving that we receive. In pardoning that we are pardoned. And in dying that we are born to eternal life. The widows and Jesus witness the truth of these words. They give me hope that I can make God my priority, and receive more than I can hope or imagine by giving, even all that I have. 6 Catholic Campaign for Human Development Working on the Margins LEARN about those living in poverty. ACT and spread the word about poverty by passing along this flier. CONNECT with the work of CCHD by supporting the collection. PRAY for those who benefit from this collection. Too many people in our country find themselves living in poverty, and the barriers to breaking this cycle can sometimes feel impossibly large. But when people join together to work for more just communities, change can happen. Our faith calls us to walk with our brothers and sisters who find themselves on the margins of society and empower them to create change in their communities. With your support to the Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD), this kind of lasting change becomes possible. When you support the CCHD Collection, 75 percent goes to national projects that address the root causes of poverty and 25 percent stays here in our diocese to empower our local brothers and sisters living on the margins. Stable housing is often one of the first steps for someone trying to break out of the cycle of poverty. In Portland, Oregon, the cost to rent an apartment or buy a property has increased beyond what is possible for low and moderate income families. This has created a housing crisis leaving many people unable to find an affordable place to live.
