3 The Baptism of the Lord Parish & Community News Parish Book Club Wednesday, January 30 th at 6:30 p.m. Please join us for our next book club meeting as we discuss Into His Likeness: Be Transformed as a Disciple of Christ by Edward Sri. We will begin at 6:30 p.m. for snacks and socializing, with our book discussion starting at 7:00 p.m. Here is a brief overview of the book: In the ancient disciple-rabbi relationship, the disciple would follow the rabbi so closely that he would be covered in the dust kicked up from his rabbi's feet. Thousands of years later, though we walk on roads of pavement and not dust, we are still called to be disciples to follow our Rabbi, Jesus Christ, so closely that we are covered with his life, changed, and made new. St. Christopher School invites families to see for themselves all that St. Chris offers during its upcoming Open Houses for prospective students! These drop-in Open Houses will take place during Catholic Schools Week on Sunday, January 27, 2019 from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM and on Tuesday, January 29, from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM. KNIGHTS NEWS Saint Joseph Knights of Columbus Council The Knights of Columbus would like to extend a big thank you to everyone who took part in the December 14 th Blood Drive. Over 50 people stopped in and the Red Cross collected 32 units of blood which will impact the lives of 96 hospital patients! We also offer our heartfelt thanks to all of our Knights, volunteers and blood-drive coordinators who work to make these drives a success. We re grateful to everyone for their time, generosity and dedication to helping others! Infant Jesus School Open Houses Infant Jesus School provides a moral and spiritual environment, promotes academic excellence with enriching extra-curricular activities, and encourages our students to be responsible and caring individuals. This is our mission and we work very hard to accomplish the goals daily. We encourage anyone with children, grandchildren, friends who are looking for a strong faith-based foundation to visit our school. Children preparing for the sacrament should have the first three chapters completed by this date. Grade 3 Confirmation Parent Meeting Parents with children in the third grade are asked to attend either of the two parents meetings on Sunday, January 27th at 11:15am or Tuesday, January 29th at 7pm in Room 5/6. 5 The Baptism of the Lord REFLECTIONS By Bishop Christian When an infant is clothed with the white baptismal garment, the priest or deacon prays: You have become a new creation and have clothed yourself in Christ. See in this white garment the outward sign of your Christian dignity. With your family and friends to help you by word and example, bring that dignity unstained into the everlasting life of heaven. (Rite of Baptism for Children, 99). At Jesus baptism a voice came from heaven: You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased. (Luke 3:16). He did not become a new creation, as we do. However, people had a new awareness of who he was, God s beloved Son. When we are baptized, we become God s adopted sons and daughters. Baptism clothes us with Christ. We are to bring the Christian dignity of that garment unstained into everlasting life. Titus directs us in how to do that. We are to live with self-control, growing in biblical justice, that is, right relationship with God and one another. We are to be people of prayer and devotion or holiness, to which every baptized person is called, no matter our state in life or lifestyle. By being holy, we fill the world with the comfort, tenderness, and care about which Isaiah speaks. The mountains, valleys, rough edges, and winding paths that can hinder us or make it difficult for us to trust God s ways are removed. And the glory of God is revealed when we find light in darkness, courage in fear, hope in despair, and life in the various deaths each day can bring. 6 OUTREACH COMMITTEE HOLIDAY GIFT PROGRAM 2018 UPDATE Bless all of you who came forward and chose gift tags for those less fortunate than yourselves. Your willingness to help others is exemplary and is a witness to how we are good stewards. We especially want to thank the enthusiastic Outreach team who wrote up and gave out the tags from the Front Door Agency. This amounted to each child receiving four gift tags each. This you witnessed at all of the Masses on the weekend of December 1st d and 2nd. We delivered all of the above to the Front Door Agency (formerly Pastoral Care) on Sunday afternoon and not one gift was missing. It was truly amazing to see all of you return your precious gifts. Thank you to the following youth who helped us so efficiently bring all of the gifts to the parish hall for us. Brendan, Kevin & Erin Flaherty & Maddie & Jack Hamblett. Great job! We also thank you, the parishioners, for your generosity regarding Keystone Hall/Shelter again this year. As you witnessed, your gifts to individual clients were much larger this year too. When we arrived to deliver these gifts to them, the staff had just finished a meeting and were trying to organize an effort to purchase items for their clients. The gifts from all of you touched them deeply as we make no promises, just deliver all that you give knowing they are hoping for donations from the area. The Keystone organization is extremely touched by our adopting them as an agency. This year we are happy to share with you that we also reached out to Keystone to purchase gifts for the children who are in residents with their families. The Friday before Christmas we purchased three gifts for each child living at Keystone between the ages of 3 months to teenagers, 21 of them. Also, thank you for your generosity regarding the Meals On Wheels program. Once again, you did not say NO but said YES and we were touched by your acts of kindness and your generosity. 6 boxes filled with lap robes, toiletries, goodies and much more were presented for clients. In addition, we gave them a sum of $3,000, all of your donations, toward meals for the shut-ins. 35 families were involved in this endeavor. Your response to the request for cards for the shut-ins allowed us to make up over 40 packets of 25 cards, some Christmas, some birthdays, notes, get well, etc. Thank you to those of you who also receive requests from the Meals On Wheels program through the mail. I will have more information to share from this agency. You will be amazed and how many they reach out to. Ladies, we thank you for coming forward to knit hats and mittens all year. You were incredible. Hats and mittens for all ages came in steady. One parishioner knitted 150 hats this year. We have given each and every child mittens/hats, and we still have some available for the long, winter months. Last but surely not least, we also supported families right here at home in our very own parish community. I know I speak for them when I say, God bless you all, good and faith filled servants of the Lord. Please know that your generosity in giving to this phase of the program allowed us to give them debit cards through your generosity.
