2 T R A C Y T O N U N I T E D M E T H O D I S T C H U R C H P a g e 2 Grace Happens September Dear Sisters and Brothers! Grace Happens. A friend says this line should be a bumper-sticker on all our cars, and an attitude in all our lives. Every day, it seems, God sends somebody into my life, and grace happens. Walking a couple miles through Tacoma the other day, I ran into Yaya and Lucy, and their grandmother. I knew them from the neighborhood when I was pastor in Tacoma. I had first met them when the girls were preschoolers now they re pre-teens and one of them was throwing a tantrum outside my office window. I had gone outside, and we had chatted for ten or fifteen minutes, while the little one calmed down, and discovered a common love for church music. It wouldn t have happened if I had stayed in the office. This week, I was able to reconnect with them, and to share news of a church music job opening with the girls grandmother. When I was at the grocery store, there was an acquaintance who introduced me to a church friend who was living with some disabilities; my acquaintance had been moved to call him and ask if he wanted to do some errands together. That grace happened because he didn t decide he was too busy to act with grace. Last week, I went to eat a quick meal at a time I hadn t planned, made a wrong turn, and ended up pulling into the Family Pancake House, where I was able to visit with Sue Lowman and find out that the following morning she would be having some surgery. That visit wouldn t have happened if I hadn t been open to the nudge to turn in at the Pancake House, instead of going on down the road to a more usual place. That reminds me of the time a few years ago when, I drove the route I hadn t meant to drive, and had the chance to take an injured woman to the emergency room. And every day, especially in these warm days, there are folks walking the neighborhood or gazing at the bay: it s a time to share the beauty, perhaps to learn names and share a connection. Grace happens. Or rather, grace happens, if we let it. The only way the grace won t happen is if we let our plans rule our lives. In each of these situations, I could have ignored the prompting to be open to the other person, and the world would have been a little bit more graceless. Day by day, looking for instances of grace, and working to nurture that part of our spirits that is open to acting in grace, will shape us to notice and respond and give thanks, to become partners in God s amazing grace. Love, Wes

3 Remember, It s a Holiday Weekend! Be Safe Everyone! P a g e 3 TRAFFIC TICKET T R A C Y T O N U N I T E D M E T H O D I S T C H U R C H Jack took a long look at his speedometer before slowing down: 73 in a 55 zone. Fourth time in as many months. How could a guy get caught so often? When his car had slowed to 10 miles an hour, Jack pulled over, but only partially. Let the cop worry about the potential traffic hazard. Maybe some other car will tweak his backside with a mirror. The cop was stepping out of his car, the big pad in hand. Bob? Bob from church? Jack sunk farther into his trench coat. This was worse than the coming ticket. A Christian cop catching a guy from his own church. A guy who happened to be a little anxious to get home after a long day at the office. A guy he was about to play golf with tomorrow. Jumping out of the car, he approached a man he saw every Sunday, a man he'd never seen in uniform. "Hi, Bob. Fancy meeting you like this." "Hello, Jack." No smile. "Guess you caught me red-handed in a rush to see my wife and kids." "Yeah, I guess." Bob seemed uncertain. Good. "I've seen some long days at the office lately. I'm afraid I bent the rules a bit-just this once." Jack toed at a pebble on the pavement. "Diane said something about roast beef and potatoes tonight. Know what I mean?" "I know what you mean. I also know that you have a reputation in our precinct." Ouch! This was not going in the right direction. Time to change tactics. "What'd you clock me at?" "Seventy-one. Would you sit back in your car, please?" "Now wait a minute here, Bob. I checked as soon as I saw you. I was barely nudging 65." The lie seemed to come easier with every ticket."please, Jack, in the car." Flustered, Jack hunched himself through the still-open door. Slamming it shut, he stared at the dashboard. He was in no rush to open the window. The minutes ticked by. Bob scribbled away on the pad. Why hadn't he asked for a driver's license? Whatever the reason, it would be a month of Sundays before Jack ever sat near this cop again. A tap on the door jerked his head to the left. There was Bob, a folded paper in hand. Jack rolled down the window a mere two inches, just enough room for Bob to pass him the slip. "Thanks." Jack could not quite keep the sneer out of his voice. Bob returned to his car without a word. Jack watched his retreat in the mirror. Jack unfolded the sheet of paper. How much was this one going to cost? Wait a minute. What was this? Some kind of joke? Certainly not a ticket. Jack began to read: "Dear Jack, Once upon a time I had a daughter. She was six when killed by a car. You guessed it - a speeding driver. A fine and three months in jail, and the man was free. Free to hug his daughters. All three of them. I only had one, and I'm going to have to wait until heaven before I can ever hug her again. A thousand times I've tried to forgive that man. A thousand times I thought I had. Maybe I did, but I need to do it again. Even now... Pray for me. And be careful. My son is all I have left. Bob" Jack twisted around in time to see Bob's car pull away and head down the road. Jack watched until it disappeared. A full 15 minutes later, he, too, pulled away and drove slowly home, praying for forgiveness and hugging a surprised wife and kids when he arrived. Life is precious. Handle with care. - Author Unknown

Please let Libby Correll know if you would be willing to help on one of those nights. If you have not participated in this community service in the past, you will find it is a blessing and a wonderful way to extend God's love to others. When there are no church's to cover a night, the Benedict House has emergency food in their freezer. Right now the freezer is empty. If you would like to donate to help purchase food, please make the check out to Tracyton UMC and mark it for Benedict House. About Benedict House Benedict House is an innovative program that provides emergency shelter and transitional housing with supportive services for single homeless men and homeless men with children. This unique program incorporates two elements of the continuum of care model emergency shelter and transitional housing. The underlying purpose is to help residents rebuild their lives and to move them towards permanent housing, the third element in the model. Residents may stay for a period of up to 90 days in emergency bed, up to 1 year in a transitional bed and up to 2 years in the family unit. 9 T R A C Y T O N U N I T E D M E T H O D I S T C H U R C H T h e l a s t W a l k & T a l k f o r t h e s u m m e r o f The last Tuesday of August has now passed, and with it the season of gathering on Tuesday mornings to go for a walk in our church neighborhood. It is good to be recognized by the neighbors, glad to say hello, and see us out again. Watching our church neighborhood change, and bitter sweet are some changes---seeing the Tracyton School demolished, and the stand of old fir trees cut down on the hill above the church. Changes, big and little, a house that last year was marked with yellow tape as uninhabitable this year is refurbished and beautiful. A new home down on the waterfront, and we were invited in for a tour. An interesting and different summer---it was very dry. No fussing about should we go, or not, in the rain. The last walk this year the group braved crossing Riddell and went to visit Harriett Morton on a beautiful sunny morning. A good summer season of walking has passed into memories once more. P a g e 9 Our 8th year of Summertime walking together One of this years groups out enjoying the neighborhood as well as each others company Submitted by Susie White A d u l t S u n d a y S c h o o l C l a s s The adult Sunday School Class will continue to learn about the early church traveling with an Israeli travel guide through coastal present day Turkey by a series of DVR's. The discussions are lively and long and will carry us well through September. All are invited to come and sit in and join us after the first worship service --- and before the second. Gathering with coffee and maybe a morning snack From 9:45 to 10:45 No Sunday School on 5th Sunday, Sept. 29th! It has recently come to my attention that the church s budget is not as good as it has been. Fellowship is an important part of what we do here at TUMC, but it is also a starting point to cut some of our monthly costs. Several members have already been graciously donating cheese & cookies. There is now a greater need from both services. The church can no longer provide the grab & go items such as nuts, breakfast bars, etc. Greetings, Friends at TUMC. There are many ways of donating such items. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. You may pick up or bake & bring in any specific items you would like to have put out, either at Sunday service or any time Mon-Fri during office hours. You may also purchase a gift card for such things as fresh fruit or veggie trays, and drop that off with a note of what you would like me to spend it on. Thank you all for your continued support. Love in Christ, Abby
