3 Garden of Gethsemane Preschool Lesson, p1 Intro Tell Me About Jesus! Today s Bible story is about Jesus and his disciples. Who can tell me some things about Jesus? (Let children answer). He s the Son of God! He came from heaven! While Jesus lived on the earth, Jesus loved people better than anyone else! And Jesus patiently taught people the things of God. He also did lots of miracles because he had great power! (Disciples Accordion Craft) Who can tell me some of the names of Jesus disciples? (Let kids name some names, then quickly go through the craft). They were Jesus friends. Last week we heard the story about the Last Supper that Jesus ate with his disciples. Today we re going to learn about some more things that happened at that supper. But let s see what happened before that. Show Me Bible Story Time: Judas Even though Jesus had many friends who loved him, there were some leaders who did not love Jesus. They were jealous of Jesus because the people loved him and followed him around. So one day those leaders met together to think up a way to get rid of Jesus. And do you know who went to the meeting? (Disciple Accordion craft. Point to Judas). This guy. Do you remember who this is? (Let children answer). Yes. That s Judas. (Gasp). Why would Judas be there? I thought he was a friend of Jesus! I guess he was only pretending to be Jesus friend. Judas was greedy, so he went to the leaders and asked them, How much money will you give me if I take you to Jesus? They counted out 30 silver coins. (Open the bag, and put the coins on the table). They said, We ll pay you this much if you take us to Jesus. Judas said, O.k., I ll do it. But he had to wait for the right time. During the Last Supper, Jesus had a talk with the disciples. He told them many things. Then he said something that surprised everyone! He said one of you sitting here will turn against me. He meant that one of them would not be his friend any more. Oh no! After spending three years with Jesus, who would do such a thing! They were very sad. Then they began to ask Jesus one by one, You don t mean me, do you, Lord? Am I the one? It couldn t be me, could it? Then Judas asked, Is it I? (Whisper) I bet it got really quiet in the room! Do you think Judas is the one? (Let children answer). Yes! Judas was the one! Then Jesus told Judas, Whatever you re going to do, do it quickly. So Judas left. Bible Pictures: Jesus Tells The Disciples They Would Not Be Brave (Cross picture) Then Jesus told the other disciples that he was about to be treated like a criminal. A criminal is someone who had done something that the law says not to do. Of course, Jesus never did anything wrong. But Jesus would be treated like a criminal anyway. He told the disciples that he would be taken away, and after that, he would die on a cross. Then Jesus told the disciples that soon they would all run away and act like they didn t even know him! (Disciples Accordion craft, point to Peter). But Peter loved Jesus, and he thought he was brave. He said, No, I won t run away! But Jesus knew what would happen. He told Peter that would get scared, and he would say that he didn t know him three times! Then a rooster would crow! But Peter said, No! I will never say that! (Open Disciples craft to show all). And all of the disciples said they would stand by Jesus too, no matter what happened! Then Jesus told them something very important. Here s what he said: (Read John 14:27c). He was telling them, Don t let your hearts be sad or afraid. There s a happy ending! After I die, I will come back! I will be alive again, and I ll go to Galilee and see you all there! But the disciples didn t understand.

4 Garden of Gethsemane Preschool Lesson, p2 Pretend Play: Let s Pretend to Climb the Mountain! Soon it was time for Jesus and the disciples to go up to the mountain called the Mount of Olives. Let s pretend we re climbing up the mountain with them. (Have children stand up and pretend to climb. Show them how to take big steps, lifting their knees high). Very good! You re all great climbers! Just a little farther. O.k. I m tired! How about you? Let s sit back down and hear the rest of the story. Bible Pictures: Garden of Gethsemane Next, Jesus and the disciples went over to the beautiful Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus took Peter, James and John with him and went a little farther. He told them, Stay here and pray. Ask God to help you not sin. Then Jesus went away to go pray by himself. Jesus prayed lots of things. One thing he prayed was, God, most of all, I want what you want. Jesus went back to the disciples. Let s see what the disciples were doing. (Show disciples Sleeping, then lay face down on the table). Uh-oh. They re not praying like Jesus asked them to. They re sleeping! Again Jesus told them, Stay awake and pray so you won t sin. Let s say a rhyme for the disciples: Wake up Peter, James and John! It s time to pray. Wake up! C mon! (Repeat). Then Jesus went away again to pray by himself. He prayed the same prayer again, God, most of all, I want whatever you want. Then he went back to the disciples. Let s see how they re doing now. (Show children picture, then turn face down). Oh, no! They re still sleeping! They need to pray! Jesus asked them, Couldn t you pray with me even for a little while? Maybe if we say the rhyme a little louder, it will wake them up. Let s say the rhyme for the disciples again: Wake up Peter, James and John! It s time to pray. Wake up! C mon! (Repeat). And one more time, Jesus went away to pray. And, when he came back again, what do you think he saw? (Hesitate). I m afraid to look. (Cover your eyes). Should we look? (Show children picture). Oh, no! They re sleeping again! But now there was no more time to pray. Tell Me How the Disciples Ran Away! Just then, Judas came back! He brought with him a large crowd of men with swords! The mean leaders had sent them to come and get Jesus! They looked like they were ready to fight! Judas had already told them that he would go up and kiss Jesus, so they would know who Jesus was. So, when Judas went up to Jesus and gave him a kiss, the men with swords grabbed Jesus, and tied him up! (Whisper) But, none of the disciples stood by Jesus. They all got scared and ran away! (Pop-up Craft, show Scared Peter). They left Jesus all alone, just like Jesus had said they would! Let s Count the Times Peter Says He Doesn t Know Jesus! The men with swords took Jesus away to the mean leaders. Peter and the other disciples wanted to see what was happening to Jesus, so they followed, but they stayed far back because they were afraid. Jesus was taken into a house where they asked him lots of questions. They spit on him and made fun of him. Then they beat him and hurt him very badly. While Jesus was inside the house, Peter stayed outside. Peter didn t want anyone to know that he was a friend of Jesus because he thought they might hurt him too! Let s count the times Peter says he doesn t know Jesus: First, a girl came up to him and said, You were with Jesus! But Peter pretended that he was not Jesus friend. He said, I don t know who you re talking about! That was the first time. (Hold up one finger with children). Soon, another girl saw Peter and pointed to him. She told everyone standing there, This guy was with Jesus! But Peter said, No, I don t know Jesus! That s two times. (Hold up two fingers with children). Then other people went up to Peter and said, You must be one of Jesus friends. You talk like him! But Peter said, No, I don t know Jesus! That s three times! (Hold up three fingers).

5 Garden of Gethsemane Preschool Lesson, p3 Let s Pretend to Be Roosters! Do you remember what Jesus said would happen next? (Pop-up. Let children answer, then open craft and wiggle to make rooster s beak open and close). Cock-a-doodle-doo! The rooster crowed just like Jesus said it would! Can you pretend to be a rooster with me? (Let children join in). Cock-a-doodle-doo! Peter remembered what Jesus had told him. Then he was very sad, and he ran off to cry. Bible Pop-ups: Scared Peter / Brave Peter! Hey, I wonder how Judas is doing? (Empty money bag on table). Here s the money Judas got for taking the men to Jesus. (Disciples Accordion craft, Judas picture) Do you think he looks happy with all that money? (Let children answer). No. He s not happy at all. He felt very sad after he took the mean leaders to Jesus. He wished that he had never, ever turned against Jesus. Transition: Let s have a snack, then we can talk about the story and do some fun activities! Talk Time: God Helps Us Be Brave! Before Jesus was taken away, he asked his friends, three times, to pray, because he knew about everything that would happen, and he knew they would need God s help. Do you think Jesus wants us to pray too? (Let children answer). Yes! We need God s help too! Each one of Jesus disciples thought they were brave. They felt like they loved Jesus and would stand by him, no matter what happened. They thought they would never leave him. And, they never thought they would pretend that they didn t know Jesus. But, they weren t as brave as they thought they were. What happened when the mean men came to take Jesus away? (Let children answer). Yes, they all got scared and ran away. And Peter said he didn t know Jesus, three times, because he was afraid of what might happen if he stood by Jesus. But I ll tell you a secret: Jesus had prayed that Peter would be brave. He had asked God to make Peter s faith strong. And, some time later, God did make Peter brave! (Pop-up, turn to Brave Peter). Then Peter was a good friend to Jesus! Then Peter spoke out boldly about Jesus! And many people came to believe in Jesus because of the things Peter said! Remember when Jesus had told the disciples, Don t let your hearts be afraid? If we start to feel scared, what can we do? Let children answer). Yes! We can pray! We know God will help us when we pray and ask for his help. He loves us! He ll make our faith strong, and he ll help us be brave - just like Jesus helped Peter be brave! (Stand by Jesus pictures) Jesus is looking for friends who will stand by him. He s looking for friends who will not be afraid to say they love him! Will you be that kind of friend to Jesus? Let s pray now and ask God to make our faith strong so we ll be brave, and not be afraid. Prayer Sample: (This is just an example of what you could say. Listen to the Holy Spirit and say the words he gives you.) Give children a chance to pray also. Let Me Pray Prayer Time Dear God, Thank you for loving us so much! We love you too! Help us be brave! Help us not be afraid to tell others that we know you and love you. When we feel scared, help us remember to pray, because we need your help always! In Jesus' name we pray.
