2 T R A C Y T O N U N I T E D M E T H O D I S T C H U R C H P a g e 2 To Recognize and to Bless August, 2013 Dear sisters and brothers, On a recent Wednesday I was able to catch the Winslow ferry, and after a gorgeous ride in the warmth of a perfect summer s evening, I drove the mile or so to First United Methodist Church of Seattle. It was my first time in that shiny new building in the shadow of the Space Needle. It doesn t look like the old downtown church. But it s a space in which Church can happen in this new millenium. The occasion was a public lecture by three creative thinkers about the present opportunities and challenges of Christianity. What s happening, what is coming, doesn t look like the Church we ve known. But it looks like the work of God. Several threads were woven together this week for me. I want to share them with you. Thread 1: The end of Christendom. It s over. There may be places where the fact can be ignored for a while longer, maybe for a few decades. But it s over. Christendom that is to say, the dominant culture and the Christianity living in a mutually reinforcing relationship though it began with Constantine, and was cemented with Charlemagne, and though it survived Crusades, Reformation, and Revolutions it s over. Being part of the church is not the point, any more. It s not an automatic thing any more. It s not even the dominant thing any more. In fact, the church as we have known it may not be God s major method of mission to the world. Continued on page 3

3 T R A C Y T O N U N I T E D M E T H O D I S T C H U R C H P a g e 3 To Recognize and to Bless August, 2013 Continued from page 2 Thread 2: Missional God, Missional Church. But even if Christendom is over, and the traditional church, with pastors and pew-sitters is a goner, that doesn t mean that God has abandoned God s mission. God, in God s very nature, is missional. God goes. God sends. God so loves the world. God has been, is, will be, at work in the world, from the very beginning, and always. And in God s spirit and image, we go on God s mission. We gather in community, and we go out to join in God s mission, to love as God loves. Thread 3: Membership. This wasn t from the lecture in Seattle. It wasn t from church at all. It was from the novels of Wendell Berry: Nathan Coulter, The Memory of Old Jack, and most recently, Remembering. The series of novels center in the fictional Kentucky town of Port William, and the generations of people who have stewarded the land, belonged to one another, helped one another, and remembered one another s stories. Berry calls these people the membership of Port William. Is this interdependence part of what it means to be a member of the Tracyton community? of the Tracyton church? Thread 4: Recognizing. Here s where the threads came together. In responding to a question about ways that elders in the faith can serve God s mission in light of the huge changes of the world, one of the lecturers pointed out that it is a tremendous service, a tremendous gift, to pay attention; part of our calling is to notice God s activity in new expressions, and to say so. I see God at work in that! To recognize, and to bless. May you recognize God at work, even when God s mission is to do a new thing, and may you join in God s mission to bless and heal this beloved community. Love, Wes

That is why I challenge you to join Kitsap County team in supporting MADD by joining our team or forming your own team to walk or run for MADD. Don t let your distance from Seattle or busy schedules hinder you from participating, while we would love to see you all in person, you can also form a team of virtual walkers and still receive shirts and the opportunity to win prizes. 7 Navy Lt. Cmdr. Josephine Hessert, DO P a g e 7 Adding a face to the prayer requests from Roberta Daniels. Thanks Roberta for connecting us to such a special person! Kandahar Deployment Offers Dual Opportunity for Naval ER Physician Categorized in: June 2013 To read the complete article use the following web address: KANDAHAR, AFGHANISTAN A recent deployment to Afghanistan was unexpected, but welcomed by Navy Lt. Cmdr. Josephine Hessert, DO. It was a little short notice; someone else was unable to go at the last minute, recalls Hessert, who was stationed at Naval Hospital Bremerton, WA, as an ER staff physician. It was a little unfortunate for the other physician, but I was thrilled to be able to go. While deployed in Kandahar, she is not only treating severe traumatic injuries minutes after they occur in battle, but also serving as assistant chair of the Kandahar Role 3 MMU (Multinational Medical Unit) medical records committee, which coordinates records for NATO forces as they move through different levels of care and back to their home countries. This is what we train for especially in emergency medicine, Hessert says. As an emergency physician, we see some trauma back in the U.S., but it s a different scope than that which we see in Afghanistan. L a n d s c a p i n g N e w s Thanks to Lee Winterowd for refurbishing the old TUMC sign and putting it on the front of the church. Be sure to notice it, if you haven't already. It is beautiful. The next stage of work is coming soon. Dirt will be ordered for the area in front of the church outside the sanctuary. If you would be willing to help spread the dirt, please let Libby or Katherine know. It would probably only take a couple of hours on a Saturday morning. Thanks to everyone who contributed money for the geraniums in the gazebo. They sure are a nice addition to the yard.

8 T r a c y t o n t i d i n g s 10 Ways to Gauge your Christian Development By Roger Wolsey P a g e 8 I. Write down the following 9 words as a list: love, joy, peace, patience/forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23) Put a number from 1-10 next to each that most closely indicates your current level of that trait and quality. Don t over-think it. Go with your gut. Guts are honest. Add up the numbers, divide that sum by 9. This is your averaged Christian Fruits of the Spirit Quotient. II. Write down the following as a list: Fed hungry; Gave water to thirsty; Welcomed stranger in my home; Provided clothing to someone in need; Visited the sick and/or imprisoned. Write down the number of weeks (months? years?) ago for the last time you did each of these. Ask yourself why it s been so long since you ve done some of those things. (Matthew 25:21-4) III. Write down the following as a list: my other gods/idols; put words into God s mouth/blasphemy; Honor the Sabbath and keep it holy; Honoring my parents; Murder; Adultery; Stole something; Said something that isn t true about someone; Covet someone else s lover or belongings. Write down a number from 0-10 indicating how much you currently engage in each of those. (Exodus 20) IV. Write down the following as a list: Love God with all my heart; Love God with all my soul; Love God with all my mind; Love myself; Love others. Place a number from 1-10 for each one indicting the degree that you do that. (Matthew 22:3-40) V. Write down the names of the people who ve wronged you who you haven t fully forgiven. Write down the things that you haven t fully forgiven yourself for. (Luke 7:3-50) VI. Write down the word Judgmental and place the number from 1-10 next that you think other people would likely assign to you. (Matthew 7:1-5) VII. Write down the names of some people who you hate, people who you consider to be your enemies. Write down what it is that you don t like about them the reasons that you hate them and consider them to be enemies. For each person, place a number from 1-10 for how much you love them. Write down how you re like those people how you have some of those same qualities in your personality and in your life. (Luke 5:43-48) VIII. Write the word Thankful then place a number from 1-10 next to it according to how much you ve felt and conveyed your gratitude to God. (Luke ) IX. Write the words Generous & Sacrificial Giving then assign a number from 1-10 for what a tax-preparer or CPA would assign to you. (Luke 21:1-4) X. Katherine Smith and Marilyn Winterowd and Susie White are pretty regular, We meet at the Church on Tuesday mornings at 9:30 and set out for about an hour and a half, some days a little shorter, and some days stretching it out if the group is agreeable. All are invited who want to get out for a walk. P a g e 9 Prism meets each Thursday evening at :00pm.Why don t you think about getting in a better place than where you are physically? A d u l t S u n d a y S c h o o l continues right through the summer and you are invited to join us, between the church services, any Sunday you might have some time to watch a video and join a sort of in depth discussion of what that video is saying to you, right now, today. We share our time and thoughts and life and laughter, in just those few minutes after the first worship service --- gathering with coffee and cookie from 9:45am and finishing at 10:45am 10 Ways to Gauge your Christian Development By Roger Wolsey Ponder your responses to these inventories and consider them as being a collective mirror that you re holding up to yourself for how you re doing in your discipleship.
