From elections early on, to a canoe regatta and gun raffle, to the culmination with Memorial Day, I encourage every member to participate to the maximum. I want to focus however on what I consider to be one of the most important holidays that we recognize as a nation. Photo courtesy of Schwarz ProFoto Memorial Day was first established to recognize and honor those who fought and died during the Civil War. Some may still remember it as Decoration Day, and as the original name implied, carry on the wonderful tradition of decorating and maintaining graves of loved ones in area cemeteries. There are also other honorable traditions that have their roots in Memorial Day, such as First Responders remembering those who served and passed from us, or citizens honoring Veterans and active duty personnel via support our troops campaigns. Unfortunately, the day has also become, for many Americans, just another three day weekend and the unofficial start of summer. I therefore urge all Legion Family members to try their level best to counter that notion and maintain the tradition of honoring those who died while serving our great nation. We as a Legion Family are committed to doing just that and are working jointly with the VFW and the Marconi to put on an educational and respectful event in Denison Park on May 25 th. Details are provided below, but in the run up to the actual event, we also have an essay contest for middle school students, flag postings at Veterans graves in area cemeteries, ritual firings at the graves of Legion namesakes killed in action, ritual firings at the Painted Post and Corning monuments, and vintage military vehicle participation in area parades. The Memorial Day ceremony itself will highlight the contributions made by our service members over the years, and will feature a tribute cemetery with the names of the nearly 300 New Yorkers who died while serving in current conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, and around the world in support of the War on Terrorism. In closing I would just like to invite everyone to get involved during this very special month, and volunteer your time and your attention to the activities surrounding Memorial Day. I d also like to personally thank the many volunteers who traditionally get involved on Memorial Day weekend. Through their support our wonderful traditions are passed on from one generation to another, and the memories of those who died while serving will always be with us. Thank you. Dave

5 Page 5 THE EATON EDITORIAL In Flanders Fields In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row That mark our place, and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below We are the dead. Short days ago We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved, and were loved, and now we lie In Flanders Fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe, To you from failing hands we throw The Torch; be yours to hold it high If ye break faith with us who die We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders Fields. Lt. Col. John McCrae Inspired to write this poem on May3, 1915 after presiding over the funeral of a friend and fellow soldier. The Poppy Story From the battlefields of World War I, weary soldiers brought home the memory of a barren landscape transformed by wild poppies, red as the blood that had soaked the soil. By that miracle of nature, the spirit of their lost comrades lived on. The poppy became a symbol of the sacrifice of lives in war and represented the hope that none had died in vain. The American Legion Poppy has continued to bloom for the casualties of war. Its petals of paper bound together for veterans by veterans, reminding America each year that the men and women who have served and died for their country deserve to be remembered. The poppy, as a memorial flower, can be traced to a single individual, Moina Michael. She was moved by Lt. Col. McCrae's poem "In Flanders Fields". On impulse, she bought a bouquet of poppies (all the New York City's Wanamaker's Dept. Store had) and handed them to businessmen meeting at the YMCA where she worked. She asked them to wear the poppy as a tribute to the fallen. That was November World War I was over, but America's sons would rest forever " In Flanders Fields". Later she would spearhead a campaign that would result in the adoption of the poppy as the national symbol of sacrifice. Mayor Richard Negri will once again declare Wednesday May 20th "Poppy Day" in Corning. Anyone who can attend is welcome. We will meet at Noon in Centerway Square on Market St. Remember, the poppy's are made by veterans, and all money raised from the distribution of poppy's can only be used for veteran's programs. Hope to see you all there. Georgia Grosstephan, poppy chairman
