3 TODAY S SRITURES First Lesson 2 orinthians 4:5-12 For we do not preach ourselves, but Jesus hrist as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus sake. For God, who said, Let light shine out of darkness, made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of hrist. But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body. For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus sake, so that his life may be revealed in our mortal body. So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you. salm of the Day From salm 122 I rejoiced with those who said to me: Let us go to the house of the Lord. Our feet are standing: In your gates, O Jerusalem. Jerusalem is built like a city: That is closely compacted together. That is where the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord, to praise the name of the Lord: According to the statute given to Israel. ray for the peace of Jerusalem: May those who love you be secure. May there be peace within your walls: And security within your citadels. For the sake of my brothers and friends: I will say, eace be within you. For the sake of the house of the Lord our God: I will seek your prosperity. Second Lesson Mark 2:23-28 One Sabbath Jesus was going through the grainfields, and as his disciples walked along, they began to pick some heads of grain. The harisees said to him, Look, why are they doing what is unlawful on the Sabbath? He answered, Have you never read what David did when he and his companions were hungry and in need? In the days of Abiathar the high priest, he entered the house of God and ate the 3

4 consecrated bread, which is lawful only for priests to eat. And he also gave some to his companions. Then he said to them, The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath. Sermon Text Deuteronomy 5:12-15 Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy, as the Lord your God has commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your ox, your donkey or any of your animals, nor the alien within your gates, so that your manservant and maidservant may rest, as you do. Remember that you were slaves in Egypt and that the Lord your God brought you out of there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God has commanded you to observe the Sabbath day. Alvan was called out of this life on Monday, May 28. The family of Alvan is planning a graveside gathering at the Golden emetery this Saturday, June 9, at 2:00 pm. Members of St. aul are welcome to attend. Afterwards everyone is invited to a gathering at Julie s home in Golden for light refreshments. God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, the Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress. salm 46:1-3,7. 5

6 ALTAR FLOWERS A reminder to all that if you would like bring flowers to display on the altar (for any occasion) to please inform the Altar ommittee chair (Lisa Sprengeler) in advance. You may do this in a couple of ways: 1) by using the sign up sheet on the bulletin board or 2) by calling Lisa at her home phone, and leaving a message if she s not home. If you are planning to display flowers, please let Lisa know no later than the Friday before the Sunday you wish to do it so that she can make sure the altar is ready. If you wish to place flowers on the altar for a special occasion and would like to have an announcement included in the bulletin about this, please contact astor Schuetze directly and also Lisa to let her know about the flowers. Thank you! VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: Also, a reminder that volunteers are needed for church lawn mowing and church interior cleaning. If you can help, please add your name to the sign-up lists posted on the bulletin board in the church entry. You may choose one or more weeks. If you have questions see trustee, Mike Sprengeler. Thanks! NEWS FROM IMMANUEL LUTHERAN OLLEGE Over the past year a significant upgrade to the Immanuel Lutheran ollege website (ilc.edu) has been in the works. This exciting and enhanced update is now live to the public. The website is designed to be used by personal computer and especially by mobile devices as use of these is becoming more common. One may also subscribe to receive daily s of content that changes, e.g., Immanuel s daily bulletin and audio of the daily chapel services. Streaming and archived videos of campus events are also still available. Feel free to browse through the website with its many features. After serving as the boys dorm supervisor at Immanuel High School/ollege for the past five years, Brian Fox will be serving as a teacher at our L congregation in larkston, WA. Gus Falkenberg from Eau laire, WI will be filling the dorm supervisor position starting this coming academic year. ILHS Sports News: Last Thursday the Immanuel Lutheran High School boys baseball team won their state Regional title with a 10-0 win over lear Lake High School. They move on to the state Sectionals this Tuesday. 6

7 DAILY BIBLE READINGS FOR HOME DEVOTIONS JUNE 4-9 Mon Genesis 4:25-5:5 Adam/Eve lost one son by murder and the other by exile. When they tried again, God gave them a son who was oriented to God with his parents (25-26), whom God intended to be His closest relatives (5:1). Due to God s loving care, Adam lived a very long time, but because of his ruined genetics (3), he finally died. And all of his descendants died, too. Everybody died. We get the message: being human means dying. Tues Genesis 6:1-8 God s noble experiment had gone sour, and when even the sons of God (read hristians ) went bad (1), God decided to cancel the project (3). Humans were great in their human way, but it wasn t God s way (4-5), and it broke God s heart (6). Imagine! God regretted that He had created humans (7)! But Noah found grace in time of need. Stay tuned. Wed Genesis 8:15-22 The few survivors of humanity and other air-breathers (16-17) were released from their 375-day confinement and could step onto solid ground. Noah was thankful to the LORD God for all He had done (20), which impressed God; He resolved to keep our planet functional and productive for humanity s sake... until the clock stops (22). Thurs Genesis 9:1-7 So that s how Noah s family became our ancestors at the top of the food chain (2-4). And if you kill a deer (for example), wait till its heart stops beating before you start eating (4). Other humans are NOT fair game (5-6) for the good reason that humans are special to God (6). Finally, God authorized humans to replicate, procreate, and multiply. Fri Genesis 9:8-17 And I ll give you plenty of time to get it done. For your sakes I will allow other creatures to co-exist with you (just as I allowed other creatures to live with you in the Ark), and if you get to wondering how long you will have to populate the planet, I promise to not send another flood to exterminate every air-breather. And so that you needn t fear every rain storm as the start of another flood, I guarantee that rain brings blessings. The rainbow will stand as that guarantee: I will continue to bless you as My family. Stay tuned for God s next big announcement. Sat Genesis 11:1-9 Humans prospered and grew conceited, despising God s directive to spread out. God was prepared for that contingency and settled their hash with one flick of His finger. He confused their language so that they could not understand one another s speech, which dispersed the population, and each family was forced to develop their own lingo. BTW, it s a false notion that God invented new languages after Babel as though He had been too harsh with humans, and He back-tracked to lessen the penalty. Humans who leave God behind will have to face life without God s help. 7
