THE PRAYER FOR PURITY All: Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your Holy Name, through Christ our Lord. Amen. All: Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his All on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. THE PRAYER OF THE DAY Priest: The Lord be with you. All: And also with you. Priest: Dear God, we have all heard of the 10 Commandments. The 4th Commandment says we are supposed to observe the Sabbath and keep it holy. For us Christians, Sabbath means Sunday. Before Jesus came to be with us, your people believed they could not do anything on the Sabbath. They could not even help someone who really needed help. And today, dear God, we are going to hear about some people who got mad at Jesus because he gave bread to hungry people on the Sabbath. And because he cured a man who had a crippled hand on the Sabbath. Lord, we will hear Jesus tell us about how important it is to help people, even on the Sabbath. We will hear him say that excuses to not help people are bad news. In our other Bible reading, we will hear that we are supposed to be like Jesus. That the good things we do for other people help to make the world a better place. Father God, we pray all these things through our Lord Jesus Christ. SCRIPTURE READINGS 2

3 A reading from the book of Deuteronomy (5:12-15). Observe the Sabbath day and keep it holy, as the LORD your God commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work. But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God; you shall not do any work you, or your son or your daughter, or your male or female slave, or your ox or your donkey, or any of your livestock, or the resident alien in your towns, so that your male and female slave may rest as well as you. Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm; therefore the LORD your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day. This is the word of the Lord. Psalm 81: Sing with joy to God our strength * and raise a loud shout to the God of Jacob. 2 Raise a song and sound the timbrel, * the merry harp, and the lyre. 3 Blow the ram's-horn at the new moon, * and at the full moon, the day of our feast. 4 For this is a statute for Israel, * a law of the God of Jacob. 5 He laid it as a solemn charge upon Joseph, * when he came out of the land of Egypt. 6 I heard an unfamiliar voice saying * "I eased his shoulder from the burden; his hands were set free from bearing the load." 7 You called on me in trouble, and I saved you; * I answered you from the secret place of thunder and tested you at the waters of Meribah. 8 Hear, O my people, and I will admonish you: * O Israel, if you would but listen to me! 9 There shall be no strange god among you; * you shall not worship a foreign god. 10 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt and said, "Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it." The Epistle A reading from 2 Corinthians (4:5-12). We do not proclaim ourselves; we proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and ourselves as your slaves for Jesus sake. For it is the God who said, Let light shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in clay jars, so that it may be made clear that this extraordinary power belongs to God and does not come from us. We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be made visible in our bodies. 3

4 For while we live, we are always being given up to death for Jesus sake, so that the life of Jesus may be made visible in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you. Pete Wright THE NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. We pray for our President and all world leaders that they will make choices and decisions that help their people. Reader: We pray for anyone who is sick or hurting in any way and for all who care for

5 them. Reader: We pray for those who are poor, hungry, or in need. Reader: We pray for those who have died and the people who miss them. Reader: We pray for anyone who has not yet found their way to you, God. We hope that they may come to know and experience your love. All: Lord hear our prayer. Reader: We give thanks and pray for the Earth. We pray that we may take good care of it and its resources. Reader: We give thanks and pray for our pets and all the animals God created. Reader: We pray that we may live the way Jesus lived and wants us to live. People: Lord, hear our prayer. Strengthen him/ her/them when he/she/they stand(s); comfort him/her/them when discouraged or sorrowful; raise him/her/them up if he/she/they fall; and in his/her/their heart may your peace which passes understanding abide all the days of his/her/their life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Priest: And so, Father, we who have been redeemed by him, and made a new people by water and the Spirit, now bring before you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord. On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you this sacrifice of thanksgiving... All: We celebrate his death and resurrection, as we await the day of his coming. Priest: Lord God of our Fathers; God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see your hand at work in the world about us. Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this Holy Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the world in his name. All: Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread. Priest: Accept these prayers and praises, Father, through Jesus Christ our great High Priest, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, your Church gives + honor, + glory, and + worship, from generation to generation. Just as Jesus welcomed everyone to himself in love, in the Episcopal Church everyone is welcome to receive Communion. If you do not wish to receive communion, you may come to the altar rail, cross your hands across your chest, and the priest will ask God's blessing for you..
