1 March, 2017 Adar-Nissan, 5777 BULLETIN 1424 W. 183rd St. Homewood IL (708) Fax (708) Website: Rabbi s Message Chicago only has two seasons: winter and road construction or so the old saying goes. But I would contend we actually have three seasons: winter, road construction, and mini-grant! And with great enthusiasm we can formally announce the beginning of another busy season of wonderful programs, made possible by the generous grants provided by the Jewish Federation. In just a few short days, another mini-grant program will bring us together for a wonderful weekend of learning! On March 3 rd, 4 th, and 5 th, Rabbi Gary P. Zola, PhD, Executive Director of the Jacob Rader Marcus Center of the American Jewish Archives, will join us, to celebrate Shabbat and teach about a variety of topics in American Jewish History. In his capacity as Executive Director of the Archives, Rabbi Zola edits The American Jewish Archives Journal, and as Edward M. Ackerman Family Distinguished Professor of the American Jewish Experience & Reform Jewish History, Rabbi Zola teaches students on the Cincinnati campus of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. He is the author of a number of volumes, most recently, We Called Him Rabbi Abraham: Lincoln and American Jewry, and he is a well-versed speaker and presenter. 2 President s Message Let's talk about Purim costumes from years past Those of us born in the "baby boomer" era were treated to souvenirs that our parents brought back from WWII. Ruth F. and I both received Chinese/ Japanese attire from our fathers. Ruth stated that she enjoyed dressing up in these outfits, as did I until..i was a four-year-old geisha at the Purim parade. Let's not even go into the fact that I was dressed up as a female "escort". My parents painted my face white, drew slanted eyes on me, and they stuck chopsticks in my top knot; very politically incorrect, even in Did I mention that all the other girls were dressed up as Esther?? Did I mention that I spent years in therapy?? Larry B. has created a character that I, for one, look forward to seeing every year. His character's name is Gregor, not to be confused with Igor. Gregor, Haman's lackey, has provided audiences with many a laugh over the years. Hunched over, armed with a questionable accent, Gregor has become part of BYBS Purim lore. Then there was Barb S.'s Pink Lady satin jacket..very fierce! I also loved Libby M.'s Esther costume, hilarious in its simplicity; The Little Mermaid's ponytail, veil, and tiara. One year, in the 1970's while my family belonged to BJBE, and I lived in lovely, idyllic Alsip, I decided to schlep my friend, Mary, with me to the BJBE Purim celebration. Mary dressed as a stop light, and I dressed up as Dolly Parton. Driving from Alsip to Glenview, on a day that was not Halloween, I was clad with several flashy blonde wigs, false eyelashes, and fake boobs crushing into the steering wheel. Next to me in the car, was a human stop light. Tollbooth after tollbooth through which we drove, drew quizzical stares from toll collectors. Forty miles later, we arrived at BJBE, and I won first prize in the costume contest. I probably won a bag of hamantashen or something. Well, the party had to end sometime, so Dolly and Stoplight, fake eyelashes and fake boobs strewn about in the car, drove south on the same toll way. But I won first prize, dude. (Service schedule continued) Friday, March 24, 7:30 pm Community Service at TAS; No service at BYBS Saturday, March 25, 10:15 am Shabbat Service; Shabbat HaChodesh Torah Portion: Vayakhel/Pekudei Exodus 35:1 40:38 Haftarah: Ezekiel 45:16 25 Friday, March 31, 7:30 pm Shabbat Service April, 2017 Saturday, April 1, 10:15 am Shabbat Service Torah portion: Vayikra Leviticus 1:1-5:26 Haftorah: Isaiah 43:21-44:23 Friday, April 7, 7:30 pm Shabbat TAS honoring NCJW South Cook Section 95th birthday; No BYBS Saturday, April 8, 10:15 am Shabbat Service: Shabbat Hagadol Torah portion: Tzav Leviticus 6:1-8:36 Haftorah Malachi 3:4-24 Tuesday, April 11, 10 am Festival Community 2nd Seder at BYBS 6:30 pm Friday, April 14, 7 pm We hope to see you at our Megillah reading this year on Saturday evening, March 11. 3 (Rabbi s Message continued from page 1) Though I ve known Rabbi Zola all my life, as a close family friend, it was my great pleasure to study with him while I was a rabbinical student in Cincinnati. And I hope that you, too, will take great advantage of the opportunity to join in community, and to learn from this wonderful teacher. On Friday evening, March 7:30pm, Rabbi Zola will present He was one of us! American Jewry s Relationship with Abraham Lincoln following community Shabbat Services at BYBS. On Saturday morning, March 10:00am, during community Shabbat services at Temple Anshe Sholom, led by our Beit AmiChai Hebrew School students, Rabbi Zola will continue with American Jews or Jewish Americans?- Lessons we Learn from Mourning Abraham Lincoln. And finally, on Sunday morning, March 11:00am, at BYBS, Rabbi Zola will share Great Voices, Civil Rights, and Jews in the American South. Please join us for this wonderful weekend of learning! Wishing you a meaningful mini-grant season! Let the learning begin! Rabbi Carmit Harari (Service schedule cont. from page 2) Saturday, April 15, 10:15 am Shabbat service Chol Ha Mo-ed Pesach Torah portion Exodus 33:12-34:26 Haftorah: Ezekiel 37:1-14 Monday, April 17, 10:15 am Festival BYBS Friday, April 21, 7:30 pm Shabbat Service, Nancy Friedman soloist Saturday, April 22, 10:15 am Torah portion Sh'mini Leviticus 9:1-11:47 Haftorah : II Samuel 6:1-7:17 Friday, April 28, 7:30 pm Shabbat service Saturday, April 29, 10:15 am Shabbat service Torah portion Tazria Metzora Leviticus 12:1-15:33 Haftorah: II Kings 7:3-7:29 Steering Committee Update Presidents Message March, 2017 The Steering Committee met for 2 1/2 invigorating hours on Thursday, February 17. One of the issues we discussed is improved communication with our constituencies, so this same information is being sent to all three congregations for insertion in the respective newsletters. The rest of the evening was spent reviewing the proposed Letter of Intent that was developed by attorney Michael Lorge for the prospective merger of the three congregations. The Letter of Intent covers such issues as the purpose of the merger, the concept of the new congregation, the steps and interim governance involved in the merger, task forces, assets and properties. We forwarded our corrections and additions to Michael. The Steering Committee will meet again on Thursday, March 9, at which point we will review the corrected Letter of Intent. If it meets with our approval, we will present it to our respective boards the following week for approval. Again, if you have any questions or comments, please contact a member of the board. We actually know more than the local rumor mill and look forward to talking with you. 3

4 Beit AmiChai On Sunday, February 5th, our third through seventh grade students participated in the World Wide Wrap. Thank you to Ron Rutzky for organizing this for us. Rabbi Caplan, Rabbi Harari and Ron along with members of Am Echad worked with groups of Beit AmiChai students to teach them about Tefillin and how to put it on. Thank you to all who participated and helped make this a wonderful experience! I also want to thank, Quynh Kirschner, Robin Latman, Joel Williams and Tracey Levy for preparing platters for the Tu B'Shevat Seders that our Sunday School classes had. We had our annual Havdalah service, pasta dinner and dessert auction on Saturday, February 25th at 6:15 p.m. at B'nai Yehuda Beth Sholom. This year our dessert auction will benefit both our own Beit AmiChai school and Leo Baeck school in Haifa Israel. I hope many of you will join us on Saturday, March 4th as our Hebrew School students lead the Saturday morning service. Services begin at 10:00 a.m. at Temple Anshe Sholom. We will also have the privilege of hearing Rabbi Gary Zola speak that morning. We will be celebrating Purim at Temple Anshe Sholom on Sunday morning March 12th with the students from both Munster Congregations. We will begin at 10:30 a.m. with a short Megillah reading, Purim shpiel and songs. Everyone is then invited to have food, fun and games in our carnival. We will end our morning at 12:30 p.m. What s Up with Sisterhood Our Book Review held in February was a success as all three congregations came together to discuss Protecting Paige with the author Deby Eisenberg. She shared her creative journey as she wrote this book followed by a lively discussion and of course, a delicious luncheon organized by Ruth Friedman. On March 31 st, we will be celebrating Sisterhood Shabbat. Jonathan Roth, an employment specialist with the ARK, will be sharing the many programs that the ARK offers to the Jewish community. He will also talk about the Closet that WRJ Midwest is co-sponsoring with them. Come enjoy Shabbat with us and learn more about their many programs and enjoy a special Oneg. Plans are underway for our community seder. Check the flyer. Gayle Weil, Judy Lohr, Penny Shnay and I are off to the WRJ Fried Leadership Conference in Charleston this week. We look forward to sharing our experience. We are excited to network with sisterhoods from across the United States. Save the date for Kallah at OSRUI - April Exciting programs are being planned. B Shalom Donelle Mindy Miller Calling All Bakers We need bakers to help replenish the freezer. We will need goodies for March 2 for the Scholar in Residence weekend and for Sisterhood Shabbat on March 31. Please contact Harlene if you are willing to help. Participants in the World Wide Wrap 4

It's always nice to have a few on hand for those unexpected gifts you need right away. Buy gift cards via the temple s scrip program and give two presents at once.
