2 Morrison Shabbat Dinner Once again we met for the Morrison Shabbat Dinner in memory of Abe Morrison. It was bittersweet since it was the last one at Beth Hillel on Wintonbury Ave. But here s hoping that wherever we go, we can still be all together and find a way to continue the tradition. Thanks to all who came and participated, especially in the La chaim toast we shared in the kitchen (also a tradition!) and family You can find more photos on our BHS website: community/photo-gallery/ Condolences Sandra Needelman on the passing of her beloved father, Joseph Katzman Rabbi Gary Karlin on the passing of his beloved mother, Lois Meriam Karlin BETH HILLEL SYNAGOGUE 160 Wintonbury Avenue Bloomfield, CT Rabbi: Rabbi Emeritus: Rabbi Emeritus: Staff: Gary Karlin Gary L. 3 From Rabbi Karlin s Desk Rabbi Karlin is requesting minyanim for the following times this week: Thursday evening, July 7:30pm Saturday evening, July 7:45pm Sunday morning, July 9:00am PLEASE CALL THE OF- FICE TO LET US KNOW THAT YOU ARE AVAILA- BLE FOR MINYAN: (860) He will be sitting shiva at Beth Hillel Synagogue in the Multi-Purpose Room: Thursday afternoon from 1:00-5:00pm Friday morning from 9:00am-1:00pm תשעה באב Tish'a B'Av Tisha B'Av ("the Ninth of Av,") is an annual fast day in Judaism, named for the ninth day (Tisha) of the month of Av in the Hebrew calendar. The fast commemorates the destruction of both the First Temple and Second Temple in Jerusalem, which occurred about 655 years apart, but on the same Hebrew calendar date. Tisha B'Av is never observed on Shabbat. If the 9th of Av falls on a Saturday, the fast is postponed until the 10th of Av. Tish'a B'Av begins at sundown on Mon, 31 July TISHA B AV Community Services: This year's community Tisha B'Av evening services will be held at the Emanuel on Monday, July 31, at 8 p.m. We will read Megillat Eicha (the Book of Lamentations). On Tisha B'Av, Tuesday, Aug. 1, we will join Beth El Temple, 2626 Albany Avenue, West Hartford, at 1:30 p.m. for Mincha. Page 3 Midsummer 2017 Edition Tammuz-Av 5777

4 Shalom As I sit here writing my first bulletin article of my new term, it is bittersweet since it will be my last. This mid-summer bulletin will also be our last bulletin. I will continue to communicate with you over the next month or so by and letters and keep you up to date on what is going on with our merger talks with Beth El. When decisions must be made it will be at Congregational meetings. As we move through the summer our main focus as a board of directors and officers, is to guide us through this final chapter of Beth Hillel Synagogue as an entity and to transition us to a bright, stable future as a merged congregation. We have much work to accomplish in the next couple of months. We will be finishing up a merger agreement and bringing it to a Congregational vote. Anticipating your agreement, we then will need to make decisions about our belongings that are not going with us, and pack things up to move or store. Finally we will need to have the closing on the sale of the building. No matter what happens with our current merger talks we will have The President s Column arrangements in place for the High Holidays. In the transition process our committees, and ultimately the board of directors will decide on the disposition of all Beth Hillel property, art, records, books, Torahs, plaques, and other items, which will be moving with us and which will not. I want to remind everyone that all such items are the property of Beth Hillel. Many of these items have substantial value and/or meaning to Beth Hillel. We need everyone to honor our property rights and not attempt to take anything out of the building. If anyone has a special interest in any synagogue property, please let us know of your interest in writing and the appropriate committee, and if necessary the Board will make the decision on its disposition. Now some of the highlights of the past month. We had a wonderful Aufruf for Matthew Baram and Alayna Baron. It was such a delight to be able to pray in our main sanctuary. Other events included installation of officers, Shabbat under the Stars with Ethan Nash, honoring our long time kitchen chair, Myrna Kahan, and a tribute to our interim Rabbi. All these events couldn t happen without our volunteers. I want to thank Mark Goldberg and his crew for their delicious gourmet meals and Sisterhood for their consistent Oneg and Kiddush. I also want to thank Alan Goodman for all his hard work over the last two years and for his continued support. Thank you to Marilyn and Alan for sponsoring our Hav-dairy in July. There are still activities and programs scheduled for the next month so be sure to check your weekly s. We have asked Rabbi Karlin to stay on with us during this transition period for the month of July and possibly August and he has agreed. I would be remiss if I didn t mention that bills have been sent out and we are asking you to pay monthly. We need all the money we can bring in since we have retained the Rabbi, office staff and custodians for now. In closing, I want to thank all of our members for working with us as we face the challenges of building sale and merger. I hope we can count on all of you to stay with us to the end of this chapter and to come with us into the next. BHS President Beth Hillel Chai-Lites Page 4
