3 FROM THE RABBI Embracing Diversity (From a recent sermon) In the Torah, we read that Israel left Egypt with a mixed multitude. It is one of many examples in the Torah to teach us that God loves diversity. Despite the idea that we are a band of brothers, all descendants of one of the 12 sons of Jacob that become 12 tribes, this phrase mixed multitude reminds us that we were already an ethnically and racially diverse people. We were already a mix of different customs and stories. There are stories, going all the way back to creation when God makes all of the creatures of the earth, which are meant to teach us that God loves diversity. Our tradition even teaches that the first human was one and then divided into two, a text that suggests diversity even within a single species. When we get to the Tower of Babel, and the creation of a diversity of languages, we are meant to understand that God wants us to be of many cultures, languages and faiths. It is also true that God wants us to transcend those barriers, respect others and come to love our diversity and overcome our differences. This story comes around every year but it has particular resonance right now. On an international level, as our country debates the fate of dreamers and legal immigration, the respect for difference and the love of diversity is very important. Our national motto - e pluribus unum, out of many, one teaches us that our founders knew that strength does not come from being all alike. Strength comes from embracing all equally. That is why when our president denigrates people who come from other countries, when he misrepresents both the vetting process that goes into the immigration lottery and family immigration, I feel the need to speak up on behalf of the mixed multitude. While the president focuses on Africa and Haiti today, it is worthwhile to remember that Jewish immigrants were also considered unworthy in the not so distant past. In 1924 the Congressional Committee on Immigration received a report calling Jews filthy and of low physical and mental standards. They were un-american. As a result, Congress cut immigration from Eastern and Southern Europe. In 1921, over 100,000 Jews came to America; after the bill passed in 1924 that number became 10,000. Because of these laws, when Hitler came to power, Lakeside Congregation for Reform Judaism Jews were forbidden entry into the United States. Our action as a nation made us complicit in the genocide in Europe. Our ancestors came to this country to make a better life for themselves and their families. How often have we told the stories of our own relatives who made it here, saved up money, and sponsored as many members of their families as they could? Who knows how many were saved by the industrious and righteous actions of those immigrants? Now there are other nations in distress and other immigrants who would come here to build a better life. We should not shun them in favor of more blondes from Denmark or fashion models from Slovenia. Instead we should see the difficult conditions in Haiti, the Middle East, and parts of Africa as a reason to let people in rather than keep them out. Our ancestors were considered low and yet we see what these immigrants did for our country. Every study of immigrants shows what we know in our hearts about our own families. Immigrants work hard, as the musical Hamilton reminds us, We get the job done. A mixed multitude was good for our ancestors leaving Egypt and it is good for us in America today. On a more personal level, God s love for diversity is a part of Lakeside s tradition in the past, present and future. We have embraced many people in our congregation from diverse backgrounds. People of many faiths are welcome in our community. We embrace gender diversity. We embrace Jews of all hues, from all streams of our tradition. We have cooperated with most of the synagogues around us on educational, spiritual, social, and justice programs. In the Jewish community we also believe in e pluribus unum, although our tradition words it a bit differently, Kol Yisrael arevim zeh l zeh - All of the children of Israel are responsible for one another. As an opportunity comes along to unite two congregations, we are like those people leaving ancient Egypt. We don t all know each other. Not yet. But we know that we are responsible for one another. We are a mixed multitude. In a sense we are tribes that recognize a common goal and believe that together we can do greater things than we can on our own. When that mixed multitude reaches the sea, the way forward becomes clear. The midrash tells us that the sea didn t just split, revealing a clear path. It was not until the Israelites stepped into the water, took a leap into the unknown that the road stood revealed. We are taking that step, like immigrants leaving home, like slaves testing the limits of freedom. Each step we take begins to show us the beauty of the path ahead. 3

4 FROM THE PRESIDENT Home Is Where the Heart Is Many of us remember telling our parents about our engagements. It was an exciting time, full of hope for the future, but also filled with uncertainty as to what the future would hold. It was a time of change, but never a dismissal of the joys and love of our original nuclear family. It was a new start, taken with full knowledge and appreciation for where we had been, and where we hoped to grow. It was a scary and exhilarating but also rational decision, representing one of the most monumental moments of our lives. But we knew that it was the right decision to make. I want to take the opportunity to view the proposed fusion in terms of starting with a blank page, and deciding what we want to create. Let s imagine that we have 650 families. All of us live in the same community. All of us have kids and/or grandchildren in the same schools. All of us share religious views and have similar methods of celebrating those views. We all want active youth groups, well attended activities, and meaningful services. We all have the same holidays, share a love of choir participation, value religious school, and celebrate when a new B nai Mitzvah is announced. We all value a warm sense of community. All of us love lifelong learning and strive to improve the world. We all prefer having access to our Rabbi and want to know that he is always available in times of need as well as for celebrations. Now the 650 families need to have a discussion as to what to do next. Is the next step to open two synagogues that have similar viewpoints one mile apart from each other? Is there any reason to have two buildings, and run them each at 50% capacity? Should we have combined grade classrooms? Should we have to call in an outside rabbi when Rabbi Ike is out of town or has an emergency situation regarding another congregant at the same time we need him? Would we ever sit down and make this our system? Or would the 650 of us look at the obvious choice before us? If we combine now, we can unite the 650 families into one beautiful building, have two full-time rabbis, have full classrooms, have a larger choir, expand our youth programs, enhance our already fantastic adult enrichment, increase our attendance at services, have more people involved in social action, double the size of our Women of the Congregation group (obviously with a different name), and generally be in a much better position. Why is this the right time for this fusion? Because both synagogues are strong, with rabbis and cultures that complement each other. There are other examples in the North Shore of temples that combined because one or both of them were weak. They do not tend to become strong. We will be the first example in many decades of two strong temples fusing together to create an even stronger unit. Just like two young people that find that they have much in common, and love to spend time together, we know that we can achieve greater future success and secure our future better by combining with our natural partner. Would we have preferred that they move in with us? Perhaps on an emotional level, but their place is better for this future marriage based on its size and flexibility. 4 Lakeside Congregation for Reform Judaism

5 FROM THE PRESIDENT CONT D Perhaps the better analogy is two families coming together. Each of the families wants to maintain their close ties within the family, but now a Brady Bunch opportunity has presented itself. The families have spent time together, they all like each other, and it no longer makes sense to maintain two separate residences. Does that mean that either family will lose the close relationships that they have within the small group itself? Of course not. It means that of all of the other families in the world, they may have found the right one to move in with and create a new, large family. That is the stage that we now find ourselves in as a congregation. We must examine this potential marriage as a group and decide if this is the right step for our part of the family. Solel must do likewise. So why does this remain a difficult decision for some of our members? The answer is simple. It is the emotional impact of the combined joys and shared pains, the close friendships and the common history of Lakeside that makes it stand out in our minds as the best possible place to express our Reform Judaism, in whatever form that speaks to us as individuals. While our minds easily comprehend the exciting possibilities of the fusion with Solel, our emotional response is to keep those things that we love the same. This emotional impact is real, and for some members has created a sense of loss. For those members, I would like to say that it is also hard for me personally to change something that has brought my family so much joy over the years. But we have to look forward, and examine what about Lakeside created that joy. And the answer is never in the bricks of the building. It is in the clergy, family, and close friends that we have. Change is coming to the North Shore Jewish community. There are far more synagogues than this area can sustain. It is clear that over the next decades there will be consolidation. Why not take this opportunity to move while the choice is ours and there is a similar congregation just down the street? How could the answer ever be to wait until the choice is taken away from us, and we either join another synagogue as a weak add on, or heaven forbid, break apart and have our members scatter to the wind? There are many details that need to be discussed and worked out before we can vote in a knowledgeable manner on April 29th. Please join us for the various town hall meetings. Bring your ideas. Bring your passions. Join groups from each temple that will try to make a stronger, larger family for all of us. Year of Social Justice Among the core values and missions of Lakeside Congregation is our commitment to Tikkun Olam, repairing the world. Our ability to make a positive contribution to help those who need help is one of the central reasons why we exist as a Jewish institution. As our cover reflects, over this past year, not only our Social Action Committee but our whole congregation has done an outstanding job of engaging in a large number of worthy projects that provide food, clothing, shelter and counseling to those that do not possess the comforts that most of us are blessed to enjoy. With due thanks to all who contributed to our efforts, this is an ongoing mission. The march continues. Let every year be a year of social justice. As Jews this is how it must be. 6 FROM THE DIRECTOR OF LIFELONG LEARNING The Lesson of Saying Thank You My birthday is March 4, and as an avid Facebook user, it is a pleasure to wake up to literally hundreds of well-wishes. I try very hard to acknowledge each birthday greeting with an in-kind response; it is a wonderful way for me to reconnect with many friends that I do not usually see, or even with friends I see all the time. On your birthday is when Facebook really works. If only there were apps that would remind us to say thank you or to tell us when someone in the community is sick. There are great new apps that let you sign up online to send a meal to a family or as they describe it: Organize meal giving around births, surgeries, illnesses, and group events. I know that I have signed up online to give meals to friends and to have friends bring meals to someone who is sick. There are also Caring Pages which can update you on an illness. Who knows what the future will bring us in terms of apps? I am sure that one day they will have an app which, if it does not write the thank you note for YOU, it will certainly remind you that you should write a note. As the end of the year approaches, I want to thank all of my Religious School teachers, Hebrew teachers as well as the Madrichim (teacher aides on Sunday s and Tuesday s). They have been a hardworking and dedicated group that has made sure that your child s education comes first. Special thanks to Rabbi Serotta who is wonderful teacher, supporter and leader of our education both for children and adults. I would be remiss if I did not also thank all of the parents who have staffed the Religious School office on Sunday mornings and helped stuff envelopes, get out mailings and organize Torah portion readings for me. Jim Schuster has been a wonderful Chair of our Religious School Committee, and I thank him and the whole committee as we began work on our fourth accreditation from the Association of Reform Jewish Educators (ARJE). We are the oldest continuously accredited Religious School on the North Shore and we have worked very hard to achieve this level of excellent performance. Being accredited is a massive effort which involves the hard work of many people. In all, this process will take over a year and will involve many members of our congregation. We will submit written information to ARJE and then they will visit Lakeside to observe our school and our other educational programs. While here, the ARJE team will conduct interviews with our rabbi, educator, teachers, board members, parents, and many others. You will be seeing more on this as we await the site visit from our ARJE representatives. In advance, I thank everyone who has helped with our schools, our accreditation and just being a part of the Lakeside family who steps up whenever we need them. As soon as I find the Thank You app, I will let you know! B shalom, Vanessa M. In lieu of a large party, Pierce has chosen to celebrate his big day with a family trip to Spain. 14 Lakeside Congregation for Reform Judaism

15 MUSICAL NOTES Making Connections Through Song Stacey and her husband David joined Lakeside about six years ago looking for a comfortable and caring community where Stacey could feel free to express herself musically. From the beginning she has been an active member of our Lakeside choir. Nearly two years ago she, along with Debi Shandling, became the driving force behind the creation of Shabbat Unplugged a new concept for a musical Shabbat based on contemporary tunes, in-house talent, and a less formal worship environment. She recently sat down with Rick Schuster to discuss her musical experiences. Following is an edited version of that conversation. How did you first get interested in music? My first performance opportunities were singing in choirs from grade school all through high school. My introduction to Jewish contemporary folk music was through temple youth groups plus a lot of Debbie Friedman songs up at OSRUI. Later I joined with groups or sang solo in coffee houses in England. I even did some poetry readings. Was music an important part of your family life when you were growing up? What is the mission of Shabbat Unplugged? Accessibility to our members; make it easy for them to sing along and make it less of a performance in both style and substance. How would you characterize your experience with the Lakeside choir? It is a great close-knit group of people, which at its best sings with one combined voice. For many in the choir, their greatest source of spirituality comes from the music and participating. For me, I connect more spiritually when we sing in the community room among the congregation, and there is less separation between choir and others attending. Music appears to be your strongest connection to Lakeside. Do you have other significant bonding points? Our Rosh Chodesh group is a wonderful way for women to connect over a number of issues; certainly the relationship with the Rabbi, particularly for those who have suffered loss; and our Sunday Adult Enrichment programs are excellent, although I wish people would wear nametags! Any final thoughts on other features on why joining Lakeside was a good choice for you? The people are generally down-to-earth and accepting, I am comfortable here and feel good bringing family and friends. My mom sang constantly, mostly folk and protest songs; and my grandmother used to sing with her sisters over party line phones as a form of entertainment during the depression. Since you were already heavily involved in our choir, why did you feel the urge to initiate the Shabbat Unplugged band? I felt that music can be a strong motivator to bring people here, but different formats are necessary to appeal to a diverse congregation. The variety of music at Lakeside is one of the things that attracted me and David to join, plus there was an openness to expand to do more. Lakeside Congregation for Reform Judaism 15
