From the Rabbi s Study There will be food and drink, mirth and merriment. I ll tell a few jokes (hopefully fewer than last year), and we ll be sure to have a good time. In the Jewish calendar we come to the month of Adar, and we get the green light to celebrate. I threw in that green light Rabbi Isaac Serotta reference for Gatsby-philes. Bring a bouquet of daisies if you like, or a couple of eggs (east and west?), and show off your Gatsby knowledge. Things don t go so well for Haman, or Gatsby for that matter, but we promise a good time for all. What makes Gatsby great? Come to this year s Purim bash to find out. The Great Gatsby is set in the days of the Jazz Age. The days of flappers and porkpie hats, walking sticks, and JAZZ. Imagine a retelling of the Purim story through the lens of F.Scott Fitzgerald. Now stop imagining, dress the part, and come see it for yourself as a new Purim extravaganza with words by our own librettist beyond compare, Janet Gans Epner, and music by a few pikers like Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, Fats Waller, George Gershwin to drop a few names. Jay Gatsby was renowned for his parties and so are we! It is a decidedly witty and urbane affair, and anybody who s anybody will be there. So mark your calendar for Saturday, March 7 and join us for our swanky soiree. Gatsby In Shushan Pur im in the Jazz Age SATURDAY, MARCH 7, :30-7:30pm COCKTAILS AND FINGER FOOD Join us for 7:30pm COMEDY SPIEL DANCING & DESSERT $20.00 PER PERSON RSVP ONLINE OR TO HILARY AT (847) Page 3

From the Educator Vanessa Michaels Ehrlich, RJE On January 2, 2015, my family, three generations ages 17-82, returned from a trip of a lifetime in Cuba. We had planned the eight day trip long before President Obama announced we would establish diplomatic relations with Cuba and were not sure what to expect upon arrival. Our trip was a fantastic amalgam of family time, mitzvah participation, historical education, and a fun vacation. It is not easy to describe in words our trip and I have over 700 photos and videos to help me tell the story which I will share over time. Cuba is a contradiction in many ways. Communism vs. capitalism, rehabilitated vs. dilapidated buildings, Jewish communities rebuilding with Jewish American money and Cuban children making aliyah to Israel. We were welcomed for Friday night services at El Patronata, a Conservative Synagogue, and it was led by lay leaders including a teenager. We were very happy to sing along with many familiar tunes to the prayers that had some additional Ladino. (a mash of Hebrew and Spanish). We stayed in Havana and also visited the cities of Cienfuegos, Trinidad and Santa Clara. Cienfuegos and Santa Clara both had small synagogues of less than 15 people each. As part of our tzedakah we brought over the counter medicines, clothes and gave tzedakah at all of the synagogues. Page 4 As part of our trip which is described as a mission for the State Department we had many people to people visits. These visits were arranged through the group provider, and they were cultural and visits to synagogues. Our cultural visits included an urban percussion dance group which combined ballet and Flamenco dancing, a Classical music group with Latin and African influence, an African Cuban dance and music group, and a senior citizens group. We danced with the senior citizens and they taught us an old Cuban game with a small bat and funny shaped object to hit. We had a wonderful time at each stop and were very glad that these visits were part of the trip. Part of the fee for our trip included payment for these groups, and although we know that some of the money goes to the government we do know that the groups receive part of the money which I know they needed for their individual groups. Making a living in Cuba is not easy; the average salary is 20 dollars a month. When we tipped a cab driver 5 CUC (Convertible Cuban Pesos) he was visibly grateful for a generous tip. We were conscious to tip our hotel housekeepers every day and we left our extra toiletries for them on our last day. We found the Cuban people to be gracious and welcoming and felt good adding to the Cuban economy. Many people who had been to Cuba before us told us that yes they had toilet paper (you do need to tip the ladies who give out the toilet paper) but the food would be just OK. When we got there we found we were scheduled to eat at many Paladors, or private homerun restaurants and the meals were great. Even our vegetarian contingency, which was a quarter of our group, found plenty to eat. I could go on for many more pages and if you want to see a more pictorial representation of our trip, including all of the old American cars from the 1950 s take a look at my blog: inoneehrlich.blogspot.com. We have always wanted to take a trip to Cuba from Lakeside and now having done some advance scouting I hope to get a trip organized with Rabbi Serotta. If you are interested in taking a trip to Jewish Cuba please let me know: educator@ lakesidecongregation.org. Feel free to stop me and ask all about the trip. I will be happy to tell you some of our tales.

From the President Am I an American Jew or Jewish American? I still remember this debate about personal identity being a part of the discourse growing up on the North Shore of Chicago. Wherever you come down on this choice between God and country my purpose here is to remind you that you have voting rights as both. We recently had state and national elections in the U.S. and the results will have significant policy implications that impact all of us and reflect the current values and priorities of our citizens. It would have been impossible not to be aware of the looming elections given the saturated media blitz carried out by the candidates, and still the turnout was the lowest since World War II, with less than 37% of eligible voters participating. A less publicized but equally important election is now taking place in which all of us as Reform Jews also have the right and privilege to exercise our vote. From January 13 through April 30 the American Zionist Movement is holding open voting for all American Jews to determine the United States delegation to the 2015 World Zionist Organization. Established in 1897, the World Zionist Organization (WZO) is often called the Parliament of the Jewish people. Every five years the WZO convenes a Congress whose representation is determined by democratic elections among the international Zionist political parties. Between Congresses, the Zionist General Council (the Vaad Hapoel) convenes annually for discussions on pressing matters on the agenda of the Jewish people. Participation in one election is effective for five full years! In this election, our own, Rabbi Serotta is on the ARZA slate. Your vote can help send him to this remarkable parliament. Every Jew has the opportunity to vote for the platform that most aligns with his/her personal views and to help shape the agenda of the Congress. A vote for the Association of Reform Zionists of America (ARZA) slate, representing Reform Judaism, supports the following principles:» Women s Rights and Gender Equality: We strive for an Israel in which gender equality is the rule where men and women can pray as they wish and work and live together as equals, deserving of the same respect and honor.» Religious Equality: We envision and work for a society in which all denominations are treated fairly and with respect; an Israel in which all of us are Jack Kaplan, President accepted as Jews, regardless of our level of observance» Two States; One Path to Peace: Lasting peace, security and stability for Israel, the Palestinians and the surrounding Middle East region is possible through a commitment to a two-state solution. Although the road may seem long, we must pursue the path to that peace every day. If you support egalitarian prayer, if you believe in freedom of religion, the right of Reform rabbis to conduct marriage, divorce, burial and conversion, if you believe that women should Am I an American Jew or Jewish American? have equal status, this is your chance to make a difference. Join ARZA and vote in the World Zionist Congress elections. This is the best way for you to directly influence and impact the future of the Reform Movement in Israel and of the Jewish people around the globe. For more information you can contact Michael Kaplan, our ARZA representative at mikap@comcast.net or click on this link to the ARZA website: reformjews4israel.org. Page 5

Choir Chat Bob Benton, Choir Member The worst of the winter is past, or so we believe, and your choir warms to the brightness of spring with more and better music to enhance your worship experience. Some of you joined us in December when we sang with the Congregation Solel choir, their Cantor, accompanist and choir director (whom many of you remember from when he directed us) in our sanctuary. The music was spirited and fun for all present. Now, on the second Friday in February, the 13 th, we will once again join Solel s choir, but this time in their building on Clavey Road in Highland Park, just east of the Edens Expressway. Based on last year s experiences and the December service, it will be similarly inspiring and fun. Please come to be with us. We are already excited to let you know that our favorite inspired wordsmith has informed us the Purim Spiel for this year has been created and awaits our review and rehearsals. If you ve never attended Lakeside s Purim Spiel, you are in for one amazing evening, and if you have joined the crowd in past years, you already know the hilarity and, dare I say it, performances by Rabbi and Cantor that brings smiles and laughter to all present. The Spiel will be on Saturday, March 7, the hour will be forthcoming (this column believes firmly in the doctrine of early warning) so watch the newsletters carefully. And let me make sure to share with you our pride in choir alto stalwart Blair Waddick who, last year, worked for and celebrated her adult Bat Mitzvah on our bimah. Blair brings the same wonderful work ethic to every rehearsal and every choir selection, and we want to make sure you know how dedicated she is to the choir and the congregation. We hope to see you as we share our services with you. Join us for a very special Lakeside Healing Service February 3 rd and March 3 rd, :30pm Lakeside s healing service is another opportunity for our community to gather. It is for those who need care and those who give care, for anyone who feels the need of physical, spiritual or emotional healing. Our healing service is more personal, more meditative, more engaging of all our senses, finding strength by ourselves and with our community. The music is about spirit and positive feeling and the contemplative prayers are food for the mind and body. Page 8

Adult Enrichment February and March means FUN at Lakeside Congregation! So we hope you can take time from your Purim festivities and snow shoveling to join us for some extra-special Adult Enrichment programs this winter. On February 1, come celebrate the New Year for the Trees at Lakeside's first Tu Bishvat seder, hosted by Rabbi Serotta. Many American Jews associate Tu Bishvat with planting trees or eating fruits from the land of Israel. But did you know that Jewish mystics in the 16th Century created a Tu Bishvat ceremony based loosely on the Passover seder? The idea behind the ritual is that by eating different kinds of fruits with the proper intention, we can increase the flow of God's blessings into the world. This is sure to be a spiritual and educational event Marty Portnoy and Dan Blaustein, Co-Chairs for everyone and we hope to see you there. Another February highlight is the Lakeside Cafe and Art Show, on February 8. This is an annual event in which members showcase their musical skills and other talents. Many creative and talented people will be there, so we hope you can make it for this popular event. March is also jampacked with interesting programs, including a lecture by historian Laurence Stern on President Roosevelt's views regarding the proposed Jewish state (March 1) and a personal story from Tirzah Bat Levi Israel, who will reflect on her life as an African-American rabbinical student (March 15). All programs are on Sunday from 10:30 am to noon, with a complimentary breakfast 15 minutes before the start. 13 Social Action In December for Chanukah the Social Action Committee, in cooperation with Congregation Har Shalom, set up a Dreidel Board in the Temple lobby. The Dreidel Board was a way for our congregants to donate small toys and toiletry items to JCFS (Jewish Child and Family Services) and the Lake County Haven. The Board consisted of paper dreidels tacked on to a poster board. On the reverse side of each dreidel was a gift. Lakeside members were asked to take a dreidel and bring the gift back to Temple. The gifts were then taken to the two deserving organizations. The Dreidel Board was a tremendous success with over 75 gifts collected and donated. The Social Action Committee wants to thank everyone who participated in this well-received activity. Please look forward to next year s Dreidel Board. The Committee will have a display at Lakeside s 60 th Anniversary celebration on Saturday, February 7. In addition to having information and showing photos of the projects that we are involved with, there will also be an activity for everyone to participate. The activity will focus on the important issue of immigration reform. We Len Solof, Committee Chairman hope all of you will stop at our booth and take part in this activity. Our next meeting is Wednesday, February 18 at Dreidel Board with Marcia Rosenbaum, Len Solof, Rabbi Serotta 1 pm in the library at Temple. 18 ARZA The following article from a blog by Jason Boxt was originally published in The Times of Israel on December 22, 2014: The Israel Election No One Is Talking About On January 13 th, 2015, elections will begin for a legislative body with far greater reach than the Knesset, for an executive far older than the Prime Minister s office, and yet will capture a fraction of the newspaper ink that the elections in Israel will get come March. This legislative body plays a role in Israeli policy; its executive directs actual monies to Israeli organizations. It commands the attention of elected officials, Executive Directors and party leaders, and yet no one is saying a word about it. So, you ask, what is this election? It is the election for the World Zionist Congress. And it s important because it gives world Jewry a say in what happens in Israel. That s right it gives the Diaspora a say in the fate of Israel. And has done so since day one of Israel s birth. Why is this important? Because the Jewish Diaspora has a lot on the line when it comes to the current state of affairs in Israel. From issues of marriage and conversion, to the peace and security of Israel, Diaspora Jews looking for a voice and role to play in their relationship with Israel need look no further than the WZC elections. And particularly for Reform Jews in America, the moment could not have come sooner, nor at a more opportune time. With more than 45 synagogues in Israel, the Israel Movement for Progressive Judaism (IMPJ) is at a turning point; more and more Israelis are learning that to be a religious Jew in Israel needn t mean wearing a black hat. And while their numbers are small, they are growing and in dire need of resources to continue that growth. This is why the upcoming WZC elections are so important. For Reform Jews in America like myself the ambivalence we have felt toward Israel and Israeli policy has long been a question with no good answers. But today, we have an outlet, a way of rekindling our relationship with Israel in a way that transcends that ambivalence. We can support Israelis who share our values equality, egalitarianism, plurality and peace. And for just a $10 registration fee and 2 minutes of our time, we can cast a vote for ARZA Representing Reform Judaism. What will this mean? It will mean ensuring the continuation of funding to the tune of more than $4M a year for supporting the IMPJ, Reform kibbutzim, and HUC-JIR in Jerusalem, where Israeli and American students alike train to become Rabbis, Cantors, and educators. It will mean a louder voice for women like Rabbi Miri Gold the first Reform rabbi recognized by the state of Israel and it will mean greater leadership in Israeli institutions that make policy decisions. In short it matters a lot. So, in a few short months Israelis will go to the polls to decide what their Knesset looks like, and who their next Prime Minister will be. This is critically important, to be sure, but, ultimately, a decision only Israelis should make. But as Diaspora Jews, we too have a choice in just a few short weeks: we can choose to support our Israeli brothers and sisters who share our values, and, in doing so, reassert the incredibly important role Diaspora Jewry can and should play. And help create an Israel we all feel a part of. If you would like to learn more about it, go to check it out, and don t forget to vote come January 13 th. Page 18
