Refugee Project Breaking News! On May 24, 2017, Lakeside Congregation in partnership with the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS) of Chicago welcomed Makanja, a young man and Congolese refugee. As his co-sponsor, Lakeside has furnished and setup an apartment for him and are working to mentor him during this transition.

FROM THE RABBI Is Free Speech Absolute? (From Recent Sermon) It is a religious tradition that preachers have freedom of the pulpit. That means that in whatever religious denomination one might serve, ministers, priests, imams and rabbis have a right to say what they think. One of my heroes from the American Jewish tradition is Rabbi David Einhorn, who preached about abolition from his pulpit in Baltimore, prior to the Civil War. There were other rabbis at the time who did not speak about the issue, and others who spoke in favor of slavery, but Einhorn spoke regularly and forcefully about it. And while he changed some minds, and is a hero today, it was not enough to keep his congregation from running him out of town on a rail. He found life in Philadelphia a little more congenial. So free speech is not absolute. We would not invite a liar to speak in public. We would not invite a Holocaust denier to speak, even if our goal was to embarrass him. Simply allowing someone like that to take the podium is to lend credence to a lie. It is not a point of view, it is an untruth. Sometimes the line here can be more difficult to parse. What to do in a case like Ann Coulter speaking (or rather being disinvited to speak) at Berkeley? Is this a free speech issue? Let s set aside a couple of things. Let s set aside that the invitation did not follow university protocol, leaving the university scrambling to provide proper security, which led to the cancellation. And let s set aside that this outcome may be the best thing for Ann Coulter who became more relevant than usual. Free Speech Continued on Page So free speech is allowed, but free speech has consequences. When writing a sermon, I try to weigh my words carefully. That is not to say that looking back on my sermons over the years there aren t a few that I would like to take back, but I do try, even in the heat of the moment, to be thoughtful and to try and hear in my head what a critical voice would say and address that criticism or change my way of thinking. Judaism speaks of disagreement for the sake of heaven. The rabbis of Talmud often disagreed vehemently, but their disputes were for the sake of heaven. They were truly attempting to discern God s will and use it as a guide for their daily behavior. Our congregation recently had the opportunity to hear Professor Deborah Lipstadt speak. She has written a book on Holocaust denial and those who are deniers. Many of you know that she was sued by one of these deniers for libel and won. Our tradition considers the misuse of words, Lashon HaRa, slander, lying, to be one of the worst human offenses. While the children s rhyme suggest, Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me, that is wishful thinking. In fact, words can be the most harmful things of all. They can stick with us for a lifetime and be truly and deeply hurtful. Lakeside Congregation for Reform Judaism 3

FROM THE PRESIDENT Education is The Key I come from a family of educators. Between my aunts, mother, and wife, I have been surrounded by people that teach people how to gather information, and integrate that knowledge into their lives. When it became time for me to choose a temple to join, the educational component of that temple was a critical component. That is why I was so drawn to Lakeside. As many of you know, both of my children were able to experience the entire spectrum of education here, and both were confirmed. Since that time, the education has become even stronger, from the Children s Center through adulthood. Why do we have such a strong tradition of learning? Partly it is due to Jewish custom. But it is also due to the desires of the membership of Lakeside. Our members have always been interested in cutting edge educational programming. As a direct result, we have hired excellent educators at all levels. And while the methods of teaching a four-year-old are different than the methods of handling Adult Enrichment, the love of learning and applying that knowledge to life have remained constant. We are blessed to have a fully accredited Religious School to assist our children in preparing for their B nai Mitzvah. We have also created experiential learning, full of hands-on experiences. Our children learn to read Hebrew and help out in the community. They learn about laws, holidays and customs. We strive to use different methods of learning, both academic and social. We have Adult Enrichment that is the envy of the area, with compelling programming every Sunday morning. The range of subjects is quite impressive, and it has become a regular fixture here at Lakeside. We have a dedicated professional focused on lifelong learning to meet the needs of all of our congregants. I would like to take this opportunity to make a request of all of our members. First, please try out one of our impressive programs. There are always short programs (such as the Six-Day Day War through contemporary sources) as well as continuing programs. There is probably already a program that would interest you. Second, please let me know if there are any additional programs or classes that you would like, or any expansion of programs that we already have. You can feel free to approach me at Lakeside, or send me an to my personal account at LindnerRob@yahoo.com. We are always open to hearing new ideas. Third, you may have noticed that I did not name any individuals in this note. The reason is that I feel that we can and do learn from one another, and while we do have excellent leadership, I also want to emphasize that the community that we have created at Lakeside continues to be dynamic and fascinating, and I look forward to learning as much from other members informally as I do from our excellent formal programs. Please join us. Rob Lindner President We have one of the few Rabbis in the area who is trained in children s education. It is amazing to think that the same person who can lead an advanced discussion in Bible Study and create compelling sermons can also teach young children in an effective manner, but our Rabbi covers this wide range of education. 4 Lakeside Congregation for Reform Judaism

FROM THE DIRECTOR OF LIFELONG LEARNING At every Lakeside Congregation B nai Mitzvah service we give our students two certificates towards trips in Israel. I am the person who gives out these certificates and I revel in handing them out to our students. I believe that everyone should visit Israel. We are starting a list of those who may be interested and will be reaching out to you over the summer. Reservations will be needed by April Rabbi Serotta and I are looking forward to taking another Lakeside group to Israel. It could be a place to become B nai Mitzvah, see the land for the first time as an adult, or reconnect and review your relationship with Israel Vanessa M. Ehrlich, RJE Director of Lifelong Learning My Israel story includes visiting as a teenager and studying junior year abroad and meeting my husband, Arthur on the program. I want to help you make your own Israel story. In our school we study Israel in Kindergarten to Confirmation (10th grade). This year we even took a trip to Israel with our K through 4th grade students on a Sunday morning. In 4th grade we learn our connection to the People, Land and State of Israel (Am, Eretz and Medina in Hebrew). Our Hebrew classes all learn some modern Hebrew which is one more connection to Israel. At most of our local high schools, taking Hebrew as a language is an option! Rabbi Serotta offers adult education on Israel and this year is teaching a course on the 50th anniversary of the Six-Day War. Lakeside is committed to Israel education, learning and now touring and exploring. There is no substitute for visiting Israel. An expert Israel educator taught me that visiting Israel is not unlike going home for a family visit and all that entails. Israel does have all the bells and whistles of a vacation paradise but I expect it will tug on your heartstrings and give you a more concrete connection to your Jewish roots. I feel renewed every time I visit and there is always something new to discover. Lakeside Congregation and Rabbi Serotta plan to take a congregational trip to Israel in December of 2018 over winter break. This trip will be planned with both families and singles in mind. Our trip will have just the right mix of seeing sites and actual doing, including working in the fields to donate food to the largest food bank in Israel, Leket. Details about the trip will be forthcoming soon and if you are interested please let me know. Lakeside Congregation for Reform Judaism 5

FROM THE OFFICE Meet Rikki Carl! Rikki joined us this spring as Lakeside s Graphic Designer and Administrative Assistant. Rikki has a Fine Arts degree focused on graphic design, and is a freelance designer when not working at Lakeside. Having grown up on the North Shore, she has a great connection to the Jewish community and has a background in Jewish studies. Rikki is devoted to helping others and bringing a creative and fun environment to Lakeside! It is a pleasure and a big help to have her on our team. Stop by any Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30am to 1:30pm and say hello! Welcome Back Hilary! We are happy to welcome back our Manager of Events, Hilary Bryant-Sharp from her maternity leave and want to offer her congratulations on her sweet, healthy little girl! Hilary will continue to help with Lakeside events as well as work with congregants on facility arrangements for your Bris, baby naming, B nai Mitzvah, aufruf, wedding and other celebrations. Hilary s office hours are Monday and Tuesday from 8:30am to 4:30pm and Friday from 8:30am to 3:00pm. Volunteer Appreciation! Here at Lakeside, we are incredibly fortunate to have a cohort of volunteers to call upon when staff needs a few more hands on deck. However, there is one volunteer the Office would like to extend an extra thanks to Nancy Balkin! Without her commitment of time and energy, none of our mailings would have ever reached our members in time. We thank her profusely and hope we didn t work her too hard. 6 Lakeside Congregation for Reform Judaism

SOCIAL ACTION Lakeside s Refugee Project Update For the past few months, we have had an opportunity to help another refugee family. Congregation Hakafa learned of a Congolese family that needed volunteer and mentoring support, and asked if Lakeside would like to help out. The family consists of a mother and three children: two boys and a girl, ages 15, 14 and 11. They are originally from the Congo and fled to South Africa when the two boys needed medical attention. The circumstances for the family in both the Congo and South Africa were very difficult, terrifying and violent. They were in South Africa for eight years and just came to Chicago a year ago, sponsored by the Ethiopian Community Association. The mother, a trained and experienced seamstress, is working full-time in the housekeeping department at Evanston Hospital and the children are enrolled in Evanston Public Schools. We are tutoring the children and enrolled them in swimming lessons and summer camp. We are mentoring the mother, tutoring her to strengthen her language skills, taking her to the grocery store and helping her locate a larger apartment in Evanston, but we can still use your help in the following ways: Lakeside s 17th Annual Mitzvah Day was a HUGE success! Thanks to everyone who came out. Re Refugee Project Breaking News! 9 B NAI MITZVAH B nai Mitzvah Spotlight: Josh Pos Mazel Tov! Josh Pos is a 7th grader at Viking Middle School. He lives in Gurnee with his parents, Mark and Missy, his older sisters, Courtney and Abby, and his dog, Rosey. Josh is very excited to become a Bar Mitzvah on June 10, 2017 and is looking forward to sharing his special day with family and friends from near and far. This is a day that he has dreamed of since he was 3 years old when he would use his blankie as a tallit and recite prayers and sing songs. Josh s life revolves around sports! If he s not playing them (baseball, basketball and soccer), he s watching them. He often volunteers his time helping the Allied Soccer Program (a program for special needs students at Warren Township High School). For Josh s mitzvah project, he has chosen to volunteer his time at Sunrise Senior Living. He is very passionate about spending time with elderly people and enjoys helping them, sharing stories, listening about their lives and experiences, and, of course, talking sports. His quick wit, contagious smile, gregarious personality and passion for life are evident in all he does. He is adored by all who spend time with him. To Zach Lindner on becoming an Eagle Scout. WELCOME TO OUR LAKESIDE COMMUNITY Extend a warm greeting to the following newest members of Lakeside Congregation. We are so glad to have them join us. We encourage their participation in those activities that may bring richness into their lives: social justice, further religious education, music, friendship, spiritual balance, celebration, or worship. It s all here at Lakeside. Stacey Flaster-May Phillip Grossman Thomas, Cindy & Lily Kienzle Stephen & Mary Robinson Lakeside Congregation for Reform Judaism 9

MUSICAL NOTES However you like to experience it, Lakeside Congregation provides a rich and diverse music program with offerings geared to all ages and interests. Musical Notes is a format to share how Lakeside members enjoy and experience music within our community. For our summer issue, we sat down with the outgoing Chairman of the Music Committee, current Choir Member and Shabbat Unplugged aficionado, Bill (William) Echt (WIE) for a Q&A session: How did you first get into music? WIE: I started playing guitar at about age 10, inspired by the great folk song performers of the day, Dylan, Peter Paul & Mary, Simon & Garfunkel. In high school, I joined the choir because my girlfriend was in the choir. It was a small world because the choir teacher was the soprano in my synagogue s professional choir and she had sung at my Bar Mitzvah. Shabbat Unplugged has been a fun addition. We have a laid-back group and Stacey Zenn has brought some wonderful new music to our Shabbat experience. The services take me back to my time as a song leader in TOFTY (Texas Oklahoma Federation of Temple Youth). I ve also been involved in the Music Committee, which has served as a way for me to help ensure a diversified musical experience at Lakeside. It gives me another level of involvement with Richard Boldrey, Bill Crowle and the Board. What have you and your family enjoyed about Lakeside? WIE: Robbie and I actually met at Lakeside during Break-the-Fast in We are the first couple to be introduced at and then get married at Lakeside. We are forever grateful to Linda Zager for introducing us and to Rabbi Ike for blessing our union. Any other fun facts you d like to share? WIE: Between Robbie and myself we have enjoyed five B nai Mitzvot and a wedding at Lakeside. We look forward to more celebrations as part of this caring congregation. What brought you to Lakeside? WIE: My neighbors Jonathan Weiland and Anne Houde in Highland Park told me about Lakeside and our first Hanukkah party in 2000 had us hooked. Since then, you have really explored a lot of Lakeside s music scene. Can you tell us a bit about that? WIE: Well, I started singing in the Lakeside choir because my wife Robbie has been a long-singing member. We love being in the choir together, the music and the camaraderie. The choir is a wonderful community within Lakeside, and I have to say that singing is my favorite part of being involved with Lakeside music, whether up on the bimah, sitting in the congregation, or organizing the Café talent show for Adult Enrichment. 10 Lakeside Congregation for Reform Judaism

CELEBRATION OF RABBI IKE CONTINUES Feeding the Hungry With Our Lakeside Family This summer we have two opportunities to cook and serve at the Beth Emet Soup Kitchen. We are looking for a corps of volunteers for Wednesday, June 21 and Wednesday, July 19. We meet at 3:45pm at Beth Emet in Evanston, cook and serve the meal. We finish around 6:30pm and a different crew comes in to clean up the kitchen. If you are available to do some shopping the day before or day of, that would be very helpful. Different months we make different meals. Over the last year we have made chili, fish sticks and chicken stir-fry. I wonder what we ll cook up this summer?! Please Rabbi Serotta at rabbi@lakesidecongregation.org to volunteer. Those who have volunteered in the past know what a great mitzvah it is to feed the hungry. If you can get away on a Wednesday afternoon this summer, why not join the club? The Celebration for Rabbi Ike Continues Although the festive weekend celebrating Rabbi Serotta s 20th anniversary at Lakeside is behind us, there are still opportunities to honor him for the many kindnesses he has shown our members and acts of tikkun olam he has brought to our greater community. The Rabbi s Table is among the causes that is near and dear to Rabbi Ike s heart. He started it early in his tenure at Lakeside as a vehicle to help provide additional funds necessary to maintain the incredibly high quality and varied programing that we offer. Several congregations, even those considerably larger than Lakeside, do not offer nearly the robust yet intimate series of educational, musical and spiritual options that we do. The Rabbi s Table is a group of Lakeside members who meet a couple of times a year with the Rabbi in a social setting to enjoy each other s company and discuss aspects of contemporary Judaism. A highlight every year is a dinner meeting at Northmoor Country Club, and just such a program is scheduled for June 11; so act quickly to be included for this event. There is a minimum tax deductible contribution of $600 to the Rabbi s Table for annual membership or give more if your heart so moves you. Please consider joining as a way to honor Rabbi Ike and serve Lakeside. Contact Rick Schuster in the Temple office to join or for more information. Lakeside Congregation for Reform Judaism 11

SUMMER SHABBATS Free Speech Continued... Ann Coulter is not simply a conservative. In fact, former Senator Alan Simpson spoke on campus just a few weeks ago. No one could seriously think that a speech by Ted Cruz or Paul Ryan would be cancelled. It is not Coulter s politics that are there issue. Rather, it is her trafficking in hate speech that is of concern. Many times Coulter has tweeted and retweeted the work of white supremacists, including people like Ricky Vaughn, a virulent anti-semite. She herself tweeted using a four letter expletive in relation to Jews during a Republican presidential debate. Have there been people who use the freedom of the pulpit, the right to free speech and the right to free press to express hateful views? Yes. of course there have. Does that mean that an institution of higher learning is required to invite or even allow such a person to speak? Disinviting Ann Coulter from Berkeley does not muzzle her or keep her from writing or speaking. It does say that as long as she tweets our lies about Jews, Muslims, immigrants and refugees, she is not welcome. That is not about conservatism; it is about hate. Our tradition teaches that repentance and atonement are welcome. God loves, and we should love, the repentant sinner. Incendiary language burns a lot of bridges, but words that heal and rebuild them. We should, all of us, try to choose our words carefully. Speech is free, but it does have deep and lasting value. Rabbi Isaac Serotta Lakeside Congregation for Reform Judaism 21
