AROUND THE COMMUNITY A Bright Side of a Dark Event In a show of unification, the faith community responds, demonstrating common humanity. Our Lev Learning students made this dove art piece for our friends at the Tree of Life Congregation in Pittsburgh. Over 500 community members gathered with Lakeside and Solel as they joined with other congregations across the nation for a Solidarity Shabbat. 2 Lakeside Congregation for Reform Judaism

FROM THE RABBI A Time for Rededication As I write these words, it is two days after a massacre in Pittsburgh and a week before a major election. It is hard to know what to say in an article that won t see light for a month. So much happens so quickly it s hard to know what the landscape will look like tomorrow. A lot can change before December. But there are some things that are timeless. Kohelet (Ecclesiastes) teaches, To everything there is a season. A time for every purpose under heaven. There is a time to mourn. We are mourning the loss of loved ones in our extended Jewish community. The murder of people attending Shabbat services in Pittsburgh hit the whole Jewish community, and faith communities of all kinds, very hard. Throughout the month of November the families of the dead and all who mourn with them marked sheloshim, the 30-day mourning period in our tradition. This is a time for memory and a time for solidarity. We pray for the peace of those whose lives have ended, and we pray for inner peace for those who grieve. It strikes me that mourning and striving come together in the festival of Chanukah. The name of these holy days comes from the Hebrew root, which means both education and dedication. It is from the story of rededicating the ancient temple when the intolerance of Antiochus Epiphanes tried to destroy our faith. Then as now, we did not give in to forces of hate. Our faith survived and thrived because we dedicated ourselves to the preservation of faith, and we educated our children to preserve that faith. We are here because we remember those who came before us. Those who have met cruel fates, but nevertheless taught us the way to live, taught us to love. We are here because we dedicate ourselves to looking forward. In their time the Maccabees fought intolerance, they rededicated the temple in a celebration that lasts eight nights. They had the foresight to ordain that eight nights in the darkest time of year would be a festival of light forever. As you light candles this year in your homes, or at synagogue, or on the road in some exotic location, remember those who came before us who kept the light alive. They were dedicated. We rededicate ourselves to creating a loving community, embracing all people of good will, and building a nation of acceptance, love and justice. It is also a time to act. By the time you read this millions of Americans will have gone to the polls to speak their minds and act. I know that a majority of votes cast will be to create an America of love and hope. Will those votes translate into political change? That remains to be seen. We have to be vigilant at all times to make sure that the dreams of our parents and grandparents come true. That this nation will be a place where all may practice their faith unencumbered by hatred was their hope and ours. We will not stop working to make sure that votes become action and our nation lives up to its promise of creating a more perfect union. 4 FROM THE PRESIDENT Simchat Torah Simchat Torah is fast growing into my favorite Jewish holiday. I must admit that when I was growing up it hardly seemed exciting to just finish a book and then start re-reading it. But in yet another example of the amazing Rabbi who we are all blessed to have, I now feel a much deeper appreciation for this holiday. The vibrancy and life of the Torah is felt in a more emotional manner on this holiday than at any other time of year. Only Rabbi Serotta could respectfully alter the age-old prohibition on touching the Torah (for men, and even more so for women how times have changed) and encourage the whole congregation to unroll the entire Torah, so that we can see it wrap around the entire congregation. Watching it be respectfully unraveled and held up by all of the members of our temple is a powerful visual. Perhaps it was particularly so this year. One of the amazing aspects for me of the Torah is the fact that it has not changed over the years. The words are exactly the same as they have been for thousands of years. Every year we reach the end of the scroll, and then immediately start again from the beginning. But is it really the same? I can t help but wonder as I watched the transition from Cantor Jay O Brien reading the end of the Torah, and then Jen Gordon read from the beginning of the ancient scrolls how much things have changed, even while the core remains the same. I can t help but think that we interpret the words differently with every passing generation, even as we read the same words. Even the most closely held traditions and customs change. And looking back, I cannot help but think of the Simchat Torah service that I grew up with, and how it may no longer meet our spiritual needs. I do not feel more or less Jewish now than I did as a child, but I do notice the how s and the why s much more acutely now than I did before. Simchat Torah forces me to see how traditions form, and how they can be adjusted. Nobody at the service suggested we should only celebrate the holiday as it was celebrated 3,000 years ago. My mind wanders to Thanksgiving, and how growing up it had to be turkey, and now most of my family does not even eat the turkey, and various vegetarian options seem to grow in popularity. We are all blessed to have Ike Serotta as our Rabbi. He constantly amazes me with his ability to honor tradition, while meeting societal changes. He can balance the why with the why not in a way that few can achieve. I have seen how he can meld modern views to ancient traditions with such skill that it leaves me wondering why it was not handled in a particular way before, as it seems so obvious. Yet as times change, I see him make new alterations. Every year my family celebrates Simchat Torah. Every year we celebrate Thanksgiving. We never miss New Year s Eve, and the 4th of July is a regular event for us. Each year we honor our Jewish and American 4 Lakeside Congregation for Reform Judaism

FROM THE PRESIDENT traditions. And each year it evolves to fit our family beliefs and members. Sometimes the changes in traditions are fast, and sometimes they are slow. I know that the upcoming year with be filled with faster changes to my congregational traditions that I am used to experiencing. I also know that the core of my traditions are safe with Rabbi Serotta, and I can hardly wait to see how he continues to deepen my traditions while expanding my horizons in our new Temple. And no, this does not mean that I intend on eating tofu instead of turkey this year. 6 FROM THE DIRECTOR OF LIFELONG LEARNING The Power of One On Sunday January 20, 2019, our Religious School and Adult Enrichment communities will come together to sponsor The Power of ONE, on Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. weekend. This interactive program will give us an opportunity to learn about several social action initiatives from organizers in the community and allow us to see how one person can help to change the world. We will gather at Solel from 9:45 am noon to learn together and create projects that will help our local, national and international communities. Sometimes it is not easy to imagine or picture how one person can make a difference in our world today. Our students and our children may also have a difficult time believing that they can make a difference in the world. It may seem to kids as if not enough people care about climate change, protecting resources and making the world a better place. At The Power of ONE, we will have many examples of people and organizations that have made a difference in Highland Park, Chicago, across the United States and all over the world. I believe that YOU can make a difference because one person can start a ripple effect. If you inspire two people and in turn they inspire two more people, then over time and with persistence you can impact thousands of people that will have a lasting effect over the generations. Here are just a few of the people we will be hearing from on January 20th: families and spiritual seekers to Judaism and the Jewish community, and helping congregations build and deepen welcoming and relational culture through her nearly 10 years as the URJ Regional Director of Outreach. Logan Zinman Gerber is the national teen campaign organizer for the Reform Movement, working with high school and college students on our gun violence prevention strategy. Logan works and connects with hundreds of teens year-round to help create events and programs that foster leadership development and Jewish identity, and give teens confidence in their gifts and talents. Jeff Aeder is the owner of Milt s BBQ. As part of Milt s mission, they feature speakers from around the world to address issues of politics, history, spirituality, humor and more. To support Milt s community programming, they have established the Jeffrey F. Kahan Memorial Fund, a donor advised fund at the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago. In addition to gifts by many of Jeff s friends, Milt s donates 100% of its profits to the Fund. That morning we will also have the opportunity to work with war veterans to compose letters to the military, pack food for Blessings in Bags and participate in other hands-on projects. We will begin the morning with t filot services that will highlight our Junior choir. We have always said that at Lakeside we believe that every day is Mitzvah Day! Please come out and begin to make a ripple in the sea of Mitzvot as we participate and learn about new projects to make our world just a little bit better than it is today! Julie Webb is the Lead Organizer of the Illinois Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism (RAC-IL), a state-level organizing project of the RAC. 11 WOL & WRJ A Sacred Community of Women By Janet Buckstein When you think about the Women of Lakeside (WOL), the first thing that probably comes to mind is our programming, or maybe perhaps the support we provide Lakeside Congregation through our gifts to B nai Mitzvah students, OSRUI scholarships and festival onegs. You may even know that we are members of the Women of Reform Judaism (WRJ), the women s affiliate of the Union of Reform Judaism (URJ). But have you thought about what it means to be part of a community as a woman at Lakeside, in the Chicago area, throughout the world that supports other women, their hopes and dreams? The Women of Reform Judaism serves as our global voice advocating for the rights of women, by championing numerous critical social justice issues focused specifically on the needs of women. Today our unified voice is heard on such issues as pay equity, religious pluralism, gender-based violence, sex trafficking and even the Supreme Court nomination. Perhaps more importantly, WRJ serves as the means of connecting Reform Jewish women throughout the world who share a passion for healing the world and a vibrant future for Reform Judaism. Well, the Women of Lakeside also connects women within our congregational family. We have programs that we hope enrich the lives and spiritual well-being of women who attend; whether it is a Women s Shabbat Service, Women s Seder, Rosh Chodesh celebration, book discussion or just to get together to have fun. We are friends; we are like-minded in many of our goals; we are family. And we are already working with Congregation Solel in delivering joint programs for women of our combined community. Details for these events will be available in Chai Lights, on Facebook and our website. In the meantime, mark your calendars for these events below: Our Hanukkah Celebration will be a joint event for the women of our new congregation. Join us on December 5, 2018 at 6:30 pm at Lakeside. Our Women s Shabbat Service, held on February 22, 2019 at 7:30 pm at Lakeside, will be open to all members of our new congregation, with Lakeside and Solel women participating in the service and choir. Our joint Women s Seder will be at Solel on April 7, We hope that you will connect with us and be a part of our community of women. Margaret Burka Congratulations to Margaret Burka, who was elected by the Women of Lakeside as their 2018 WRJ Woman of Valor! Lakeside Congregation for Reform Judaism 11

MUSICAL NOTES Celebrating Young Talent For years we have showcased our adults who have contributed their time and talent to enrich the music and synagogue experience at Lakeside. However we are also blessed to have a number of teenagers in our congregation with a passion for music and who are already leaving an imprint on our greater community. In this article we provide a glimpse of our own Fab Four. Owen Klee, son of Jill and Michael Klee, is a sophomore at Highland Park High School. Tyler LaForce, son of Sophia and David LaForce, is a sophomore at Highland Park High School. Elizabeth Smith, daughter of Sue and Howard Smith, is in 7th grade at Edgewood Middle School. Sam Wolfe, son of Stacey and Rob Wolfe, is in 8th grade at Northwood Junior High School. Tell us about your musical activities and explain how you first got interested in music. Owen: At school I m involved in several different choirs including chorale, swing choir and madrigals (a classical singing group). I also like to play piano and guitar (Todd Kessler is my teacher). I grew up with music, and it s always been a part of me. I m an assistant vocal director of STUNTS this year and I ve been in the HPHS musical every year. I m in a band with Tyler called Out of Pocket and we had a blast playing this past year especially at the Bitter Jester Music Festival on July 4th. Elizabeth: I first began to love music in 1st grade when I started piano. Both my siblings and my dad played an instrument, so I was excited to finally be able to try out one for myself. Already I had exposure to music, as there always seemed to be some sort of classical music playing in my house, whether it was a CD or the radio or even someone playing it. I took piano lessons for two years, and while I enjoyed it, I never really loved the instrument. In 3rd grade, I went to an instrument petting zoo at Ravinia Festival and fell in love with the French horn. It took a little bit of persuasion, but finally I convinced my parents to let me stop piano and switch to the horn. From that moment on I was hooked. Currently I am in 7th grade and participate in my school band, Jazz Band, Honor Band and take part in Solo and Ensemble and ILMEA. Tyler: I have been playing piano since the age of 5. My grandma was the main reason I got into piano. I was always fascinated with the instrument, so my grandma got me one and I have been playing ever since. I could never imagine myself not playing. Sam: My musical activities are playing the baritone and banjo. I first got interested in music when I attended a concert at the high school and heard the band play. After the concert, we were invited to try the instruments. I found the baritone that night. I also play the banjo. I listen to Bluegrass music with my grandfather and we love Earl Scruggs. I wanted to learn how to play fast. My grandfather bought me my first banjo and he takes me every Thursday night for lessons. Sam Wolfe Owen Klee & Tyler LaForce 12 Lakeside Congregation for Reform Judaism

MUSICAL NOTES CONT. What have you enjoyed most about your musical experiences at Lakeside? Sam: I enjoyed the School of Rock with Todd as I could bring my own musical talents to Lakeside and share with everyone else. This past year, I blew the shofar for family services at Rosh Hashanah. It was an honor to do this for everyone attending. Elizabeth: At Lakeside I have loved the music classes we had with either Todd or Adam. Every week at Sunday School I looked forward to having them come in with the guitar and learning a fun new song or a new melody to a familiar prayer. I also love all the music in the High Holy Days services with the choir and the uplifting melodies I only get to hear once a year, especially the Kol Nidre with the cello and piano. Tyler: At Lakeside there were many amazing musical opportunities. I will always remember when I played the piano on the bimah for my Bar Mitzvah. Even though I didn t participate in choir, my brothers have told me many great things about the choir program. Owen: I love the music during services at Lakeside and the great musicians that play along with Todd during B nai Mitzvot. The Yom Kippur Koloteinu service with the cello piece was amazing. I hope that is always a part of High Holy Day services. As we move forward in consolidation with Solel what music programs would you like to see continue or added? Elizabeth: I would hope that many of the same musical programs that we have at Lakeside will be continued like music class and more recently Jewish School of Rock. I also think it would be really awesome if we had a program about the different genres of Jewish music, like Klezmer and Niguns. Tyler: I think we should continue music during services. Whenever I would go to services, I would always be excited to listen to the amazing music. I also believe that we should keep the children s choir program because it brings joy and music to a lot of kids every week. Owen: I think making sure that Todd is involved in services is important...and keeping music involved in every service is beneficial to the new synagogue. Sam: Please bring back the School of Rock. I would like to see a Shabbat Jam where we can bring our instruments and rock out together! We often say that the kids are our future. This demonstration of enthusiasm and interest reminds us that they are also our present. May their zest for music and involvement in the Jewish community stay with them throughout their lives and be an inspiration to us as we sustain and build our synagogue.
