2 Words from the Rabbi... As the air begins to turn crisp, the leaves change color, the days become shorter, and the activity of summer becomes a glorious memory, our attention turns to the Yamim Noraim, the Days of Awe; it is what we often call the High Holidays. For many of us it is a moving time of year; it is a time of reflection; it is a time for positive change. Or, at least, we wish it to be this way. In reality we do not always achieve our goals. At the JCC we try to make our High Holidays meaningful, if not cathartic. Because of our location, this task may be a bit easier for us than other congregations. One might wonder how hard it could be to feel close to the Holy One and to feel that positive change is possible, when you are two blocks off the ocean, where a glorious sunrise is only a set of the alarm clock away, and where a fireball sunset beyond the bay is right out your front door? But meaning does not happen automatically, and the impetus for positive change requires more energy than merely flicking a switch or opening a door. The question for me becomes, How can I ensure that this moment provided to us by our Jewish calendar and annual cycle, is used to achieve the greatest impact upon those of us seeking renewal? I am excited to share with you that we have an opportunity to be at the cutting edge of understanding how Judaism functions at the beginning of 21 st century. Because of my participation in Rabbis Without Borders, an arm of the National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership (CLAL), our congregation has been invited to participate in the first ever national study of the impact of the High Holiday experience on the strengths and virtues central to our tradition and human flourishing. The questions posed are Do you get something out of the High Holidays? and Does some aspect of the experience help you in your life? No one in modern history has directly, and broadly, asked these questions before. The answers could help to shape how we view the High Holidays, but they may well also have an impact on the broader Jewish future. At the JCC, our goal is to create a High Holiday experience that touches as many souls as possible. We try to be warm and inclusive while providing a broad enough experience to connect with each individual s needs at this pivotal time of the year. Some of us wish to be intellectually stimulated, some wish to be spiritually motivated, and yet others desire the Holidays to foster a call to action to do good deeds in the world. The liturgy, the prayers, the melodies, and the choreography of the High Holiday services each help to move and motivate us. But what else can we do to turn our attendance at services into a more meaningful, if not momentous, experience? This year the overarching message that I will be imparting during our High Holiday experience will be to seek out Hopefulness, Gratitude, and Belonging during our time together. Our holiday liturgy, texts, and overall structure is designed, at least in part, to help us to hear this tripartite voice and to feel connected. The Yamim Noraim provide us with an opportunity to open our minds, bodies, and souls to possibility of growth, awareness, and association. In this regard, I wish to give each of us an assignment as we prepare ourselves for our High Holiday season. When does the JCC, or our tradition, help you to feel hopeful, grateful, or as if you belong? What, in the High Holiday liturgy, or during services, enables you to experience one or all of these feelings. This will likely not Continued on Page 13 2

3 The President s Message... While we have a lot to be proud of this year, a most important one is that we completed the pay back of the entire $500,000 we borrowed for construction. We are in the midst of another super busy activities schedule. A look at our 2 page Summer Calendar Schedule mailed to every member or the very colorful 30-page Summer Program Book easily proves the point. The activities were very successful, and many of them meant extra income for our congregation. While she had lots of help, Program Chairperson Lori Shomer made it all possible and successful. Thanks to Mickey Sherry, our Building and Grounds chairman, with help from many, but especially from Ron Marr, our physical structure has had many improvements or problems solved. They also had to keep up with almost constant changes in the arrangement of chairs and four types of tables for all the events. Our membership continues to grow (36 new members in past year), but there are still a lot of Jewish people in the area who are not members. We have a building and a congregation of which we can be very proud, and I ask each member to talk us up and encourage others to join. If every member provides the name of just one potential new member, consider how many we could contact. Attendance at Friday evening and Saturday morning services also continues to grow. If you have not participated in this aspect of our congregation, do yourself a favor and come to a service to gain from the wonderful job that Rabbi Jay does in leading and explaining the services. Leslie Dinkfelt Office Staff...Jeri Riffle Computer Admin....Marcie Deutsch While many members pitch in and help a lot, I would be remiss if I didn t mention Vivian Fitts, Lori Sherry and their kitchen crew who provide Onegs and Kiddushes every week as well as for the many other food venues; Rose Valentine who keeps US informed with a Shabbat Reminder each week and the general community informed through strategic placement of ads in local media; Carole Nunberg who takes complete charge of our High Holiday seats program and the Book of Remembrance; Lynn Berkowitz who not only assumed the responsibilities of Treasurer and Bazaar Chairman when these were needed, but also runs our Religious School program; and Judy Smith who has kept things going in the winter and when I am not around. To help with the growing obligations of our clergy and facility, we established a Kol Hakavod program. If you are financially able, please consider participating. Most of us who were members during construction contributed generously to the Building Fund. There are many improvements and additions we still want to do, but they require funds. We don t have a mandatory Building Fund commitment, but I ask that our new members and those that haven t participated join the large list of those who have. And, as usual, my plea for additional volunteers. Our growth in programs and participants will require us to contract out many things we have done in the past with volunteers. This will necessitate additional expenses. Even by paying for some things we had been doing with volunteers, we can still use more volunteer help. Continued on Page 4 3

Thank you to Don Paris for making all the arrangements. THE PRESIDENT S MESSAGE... Continued from Page 3 Whether it is on occasion or several hours almost every week, we have many members who get satisfaction from helping with one or more activities. Please call me, the Office, or one of our chairpeople, and let us know that you, too, can help. WE NEED YOUR PARTICIPATION! Our Board of Directors works very hard. They wrestle with a lot of problems and must make many decisions, usually after much discussion. It is certainly not a group of YES people. We don t ask Board members for any additional financial commitment, but we do expect them to participate in many activities and hopefully chair at least one. If anyone would like to be considered for a future Board position, please let me know. I want to publicly thank the Board members for their work, their support, and their dedication. A special thanks to Judy Smith and Jeff Shapiro who are leaving our Board after 8 years of dedicated service. Stuart Pepose was also elected to the Board. Board members whose terms will end in August 2015 are Harold Farin, Eileen Levin, Richard Morgan, Toby Schwait, Karen Schwing, Susan Sheehan, Mickey Sherry, Stuart Snyder, and Rose Valentine. Certificates of Appreciation were presented to Judy Smith and Jeff Shapiro who have stepped down from the Board after serving for 8 years each. The Book Report Some of the very interesting books recently donated to our shelves in no particular order include: God s Ear - a novel by Rhoda Lerman Coming Together, Coming Apart - a memoir by Daniel Gardis My Glorious Brothers - a novel by Howard Fast Phoenix Over the Galilee - by Ka-Tzetnik The Outside World - a novel by Tova Mirvis The Bible Code - by Michael Drosnin Flight From the Reich - by Dwork & VanPelt The Chronicles of the Jewish People - by Raymond Scheinman The Jewish Yellow Pages - by Mae Shafter Rockland Dearest Anne - by Judith Katzir Living Beyond Terrorism: -Israeli Stories of Hope and Healing by Zieva Dauber Konvisser and Jewish Art -- a beautiful volume displayed on the Julius Robinson spiral bookcase! Judith C. Pripstein, Librarian 5 Sisterhood Report The summer is flying by and we are busy trying to get through all of our scheduled events. From the Welcome Back Brunch in June to the Sisterhood Lunch in August, it has been a summer full of wonderful programming and the events will carry through to the High Holy Days with the Break the Fast and lunches and other social events in the sukkah! The kitchen did extremely well at both bazaars. Our new cash register and order forms made it a much better system for ordering food and a better way of keeping records. Thanks to all our very hardworking volunteers. We held a mah jongg tournament in July which was attended by 64 players. Lunch was served and it was a great day!! Phyllis Sisenwine has done a great job with our co-sponsored onegs. We held two Lets Do Lunch events. Our kiddushes for August were all sponsored. New this year was a fun bling night -- on the premise that one woman s junk is another woman s treasure -- and it was a fun night for all who attended and left with new jewelry or handbags. The fashion show and dinner is always a popular event, and this year s did not disappoint. The Sisterhood also helped with food service for several scholar-at-the beach weekends throughout the summer and the annual meeting in August. Vivian Fitts is the Sisterhood President, but none of these events would be successful without a core of dedicated volunteers who can be found working hard every day at the JCC. Thank you!! HIGH HOLIDAY PRAYERBOOKS There are still some High Holiday Prayerbooks and Chumashim available to be purchased in memory or honor of someone or something. The cost of a prayerbook is $72 each and $120 for an Eitz Hayim Chumash. The donation includes an affirmation sticker in the book and an acknowledgement letter or letters.

6 Kol HaKavod Program The JCC of LBI thanks everyone who has responded to the Kol HaKavod Campaign. Our goal was to raise $20,000 each year for the next three years, with funds dedicated to support the growing obligations of our clergy and facility. We are pleased that, since our initial appeal in March, we have received pledges and gifts of $36,000 over three years. We hope you, too, will consider a yearly pledge to this fund. The following three categories have been created. This is a separate commitment, and it is in addition to our low annual dues obligation. Chai Level: $1,800 over three years ($600 a year) Double Chai Level: $3,600 over three years ($1,200 a year) Triple Chai Level: $5,400 over three years ($1,800 a year) We will, of course, be grateful for a gift to the fund at any time. You may download the form for making a gift to this fund by clicking on our web site or by picking up the form at the JCC Office. Please feel free to contact Rose Valentine, Kol HaKavod Chair, with any questions. ANNUAL 50/50 RAFFLE Raffle books have been mailed to all members. Tickets remain at $10 each or $100 for 11 tickets. Past years winners have received between $2,600 and $2,800 for 1 st prize, $1,300 and $1,400 for 2 nd prize, and about $450 for 3 rd prize. Please support this fundraiser from which the JCC receives between $4,000 and $4,500 for our Education Fund. The drawing will be held at our Break The Fast on October 4, so please return your ticket stubs and money to the Office quickly. PLEASE HELP MAKE A MINYAN! An important obligation that a congregation has to its members is providing a minyan in times of Yahrzeit or Shiva. The JCC of LBI has been pretty good about this, but we must try to do better. Minyans are sometimes needed at the JCC or at Shiva homes on LBI or the mainland.! We are preparing a list of names along with telephone numbers and addresses of those who agree to being called periodically to perform this mitzvah. There is no obligation to attend each time called, but we hope you will participate periodically.! The more volunteers we have, the fewer times each will have to be called. Harris Weisel has agreed to be our Minyan Coordinator. He will contact people by phone or when necessary.! Please let the JCC Office know if we can add your name or names to this list. As an egalitarian congregation, we are interested in males and females. Volunteers who are in the area all year or only in the summer are needed.! Consider this as a bank account- having a sufficient number of names available helps assure that a minyan can be provided when needed by you. Don t delay...be A MINYANAIRE! Help perform this Mitzvah by contacting the Office (609) or jccoflbi@gmail.com. 6

Both summer bazaars were very successful -- although the August one could have been called the bizarre bazaar, due to severe weather throughout the night before, which caused some tense moments until the opening hour!! A total of 105 vendors purchased spaces for each of the bazaars, and, once again, shoes and sheets were donated by Bob Cook and Dave Schatz. A dedicated group of volunteers from the Sisterhood offered breakfast, lunch and snacks throughout both days, and other volunteers were instrumental in setting up and cleaning up when the bazaars were over.! Under the leadership of Lynn Berkowitz, and with a dedicated team of volunteers, these two events raised over $13,000 for the JCC of LBI.! 8 We are very excited about the response to the new JCC caps medium blue or navy, embroidered with the JCC of LBI logo and "The Place to Be. Continued from Page 2 be an easy task; however, in order for us to grow communally and individually, I request that each of us take this task to heart. I have asked and will continue to ask congregants and those attending our services to participate in an online survey both before and after the High Holidays in order to gauge how we are affected by the holidays. The survey will be anonymous. If you are interested in participating please let me know. The information we receive will be a novel contribution to the fields of positive and social psychology as well as to the Jewish world as a whole. Furthermore, the most significant part of this process is that we ourselves will learn about how the High Holidays work for us to increase our capacity for gratitude, hopefulness and belonging. May these High Holidays see us learning, growing, thriving, healthy, and happy. L Shanah Tova U'metukah Tikatevu (May you be inscribed for a good and sweet new year). Rabbi Michael S. 16 JCC of LBI Board Meeting Summaries Summary of the Board Meeting on June 10, 2014: Attendees: Lynn Berkowitz, Harold Farin, Vivian Fitts, Sherry Fruchterman, Barry Goldman, Rabbi Michael Jay, Eileen Levin, Richard Morgan, Carole Nunberg, Don Pripstein, Jeff Shapiro, Susan Sheehan, Mickey Sherry, Lori Shomer, Judy Smith, Stu Snyder, Rose Valentine J. Shapiro reported that the accountant, Michael Gross, is ready to perform the annual review of the JCC s 2013 financial data. L. Berkowitz will provide a cash flow and balance sheet to him, so he can complete his review. L. Berkowitz reported that we have put $70,000 into a money market account at TD Bank and will be putting an additional $70,000 into a CD at Hudson Bank. J. Smith reported that she and J. Shapiro will be stepping down from the board this August when their terms expire. J. Shapiro is willing to be a member of the Finance Committee and continue to chair the Art Festival. K. Schwing, our current secretary, would like to be a board member, but not the Secretary. We will need to fill these board positions. The board discussed ideas for filling the positions for officers and board members whose terms expire in August. D. Pripstein indicated he is willing to continue to serve as President for another term, but feels it would be a good thing for someone else to come forward to take on the Presidency. D. Pripstein reported that we need a comprehensive Religious committee and chair to cover all the religious needs of our congregation including organizing minyans, and overseeing bar/bat mitzvahs and holiday services. The planting of the trees in the front of the building and the hardscape and sprinkler system will cost $8,800. It was determined that there is enough money in the TD building fund account to have the trees planted. R. Morgan suggested we sell each tree for a $500 donation. R. Valentine will put a notice in the Shabbat Reminder asking for donations for the trees. L. Shomer reported that the brochure is ready for the summer programs. Registration night is 6/19 and everyone was encouraged to attend. M. Sherry reported that the air conditioners in the office and kitchen have been fixed. A problem with a kitchen leak has been fixed. Additional parking lot stone seems to be doing the job there was no puddling after the recent rains. Revisions to the original building plans/blueprints and permits will be kept on file in the office. There are plans to power wash the condo. R. Valentine s report indicated that so far we have 17 pledges of $1,800 over 3 years plus an additional $100 donation for our Kol HaKavod Campaign. We are ahead of last year in membership dues. New name tags for members are in and may be picked up in the office. Thanks were offered to J. Riffle for finding a company to have them made at a more reasonable cost. L. Berkowitz reported that the outside spaces for the July bazaar are sold out and a few spaces are still available inside. We are being more selective with the quality and variety of the vendors. Once again, shoes and sheets are being donated. J. Shapiro reported that there is one inside space and 10 outside spaces available for the Art Festival. Volunteers are needed. R. Morgan reported that the raffle tickets have been printed and are in the office. J. Riffle reported that the 3 high school scholarship recipients have been determined and the scholarship at Pinelands has already been given out. L. Berkowitz reported that we had a well-attended and fun closing Religious School event on June 7. We do not have many students for next year: 2 preschool, 3 in Hebrew School and 3 preparing for confirmation. The pre-school will be meeting once a month for a Tot Shabbat program on Saturday mornings. Sheri Jay has offered to help with this program. L. Berkowitz has been filling in at the OC Federation President Committee meetings for D. Pripstein during the winter. It was suggested that we need someone to help oversee bar/bat mitzvahs and that a parents booklet should be provided with useful information for parents to prepare for the event. Summary of the Board Meeting on July 15, 2014: Attendees: Lynn Berkowitz, Harold Farin, Sherry Fruchterman, Rabbi Michael Jay, Eileen Levin, Richard Morgan, Carole Nunberg, Don Pripstein, Jeri Riffle, Toby Schwait, Karen Schwing, Jeff Shapiro, Susan Sheehan, Mickey Sherry, Lori Shomer, Judy Smith, Rose Valentine and Paula Hait (Guest) J. Shapiro reported that Michael Gross will do the review of the JCC s 2013 financial records. M. Gross is in contact with L. Berkowitz. J. Smith presented the slate of nominees for 2-year officer positions: D. Pripstein, President; J. Riffle, Vice President: L. Berkowitz, Treasurer, Paula Hait, Secretary and for 2-year board positions: S. Fruchterman, B. Goldman, C. Nunberg, Stuart Pepose and L. Shomer. The board approved this slate of nominees and this list will be presented to the congregation at the August congregation meeting. D. Pripstein will ask if there are additional nominees at the August meeting prior to the vote. Continued on Page 14 16

17 Continued from Page 13 Volume 8 / Issue 1 Plans for the August Congregation meeting were discussed. The board agreed that we will order 100 JCC of LBI hats and sell them as a fundraiser. Don Paris is chairing this fundraiser. J. Smith reported that the fundraiser that Rona Stein has been leading for the September performance of A Chorus Line at the Surflight Theatre has yielded a $332 profit. The board discussed ways to shorten board meetings. J. Shapiro suggested that the board be provided with information to review 2 weeks prior to the board meeting if we are going to have to vote on it. M. Sherry met with the local police to ensure we have a police presence for upcoming JCC events, including Israeli night. The board approved purchase of 8 new sanctuary chairs and additional fabric for the chairs. The board approved plans to accept a donation to cover the cost of a new floor and drapes in the social hall. C. Nunberg reported that we have received $9600 for High Holiday seats and the roll of remembrance thus far. T. Schwait reported that membership is ahead of last year at this time. People like the name tags we ordered. R. Valentine reported that we have 19 pledges from the Kol Hakavod campaign so far and have raised $11,400. Sisterhood was very successful in raising money in the kitchen at the July bazaar and at Bling night. E. Levin will work with V. Fitts to identify paid workers who can help in the kitchen with clean up for JCC events including onegs and kiddushes. L. Berkowitz reported that the July bazaar was a huge success. J. Shapiro reported that Arlene Schragger is helping with publicity for the Art Festival. R. Morgan reported that 50/50 raffle tickets will be sent out next Tuesday. D. Pripstein reported that the JCC open house is Sunday, August 10 from 12-2 p.m. Rabbi Jay reported that we had a successful Shabbaton with 40 people for dinner Friday night, 100 people at Friday night services and 60 at Saturday morning services. Thanks to L. Berkowitz for organizing the Shabbaton. The Rabbi attended the Blessing of the Fleet with other local clergy. Planning a wedding?? Celebrating a brit or a baby naming?? Having a party??
