3 Prayer is an important part of our Jewish tradition and during the High Holy Days our prayers and our praying become more intense. We pray for many reasons. Sometimes we pray to give thanks. Sometimes we pray to apologize or confess. Sometimes we pray to exclaim wonder. Sometimes we pray to ask for something. The Hebrew word for prayer is "T'fillah". The root for this word literally means "to assess". In its reflexive form it means "to seek consideration, to pray, to plead, and to intercede. According to Stephen M. Brown, in his book "Higher and Higher: Making Jewish Prayer Part of Us", 'For the Jew, prayer is a way of relating to ourselves, our fellows, and to God. Through prayer we consider who we are, and what we should become. We turn to prayer for personal comfort, strength, fellowship, self-expression, selfassessment, and identity." The cycle of the Days of Awe is designed to get us to do an assessment of ourselves and our lives. Only after an intense accounting can we then determine what needs to be done. It is only at this point that we can even begin to know what to pray for. Our recent friend and scholar, Rabbi Richard Hammerman, recently relayed the wise words of a mutual friend of ours. He said that in preparation for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, every Jew should ask himself or herself the following two part question: "What blessing do I really want, and what blessing do I really need, for the New Year". This formulation will help us to focus in on what it important. As we head into Rosh Hashanah I would humbly request that you consider and answer the following question: "What is it that you will most fervently being praying for this year?" I would appreciate your ing your response to mjayrab@gmail.com. Nitzavim (Deuteronomy 29:9-30:20) Here is the portion PARSHA The torah will be read by high school student Aaron Lombardi, our newest torah reader, who has been studying under JCC torah reader Howard Hait. Yasher Koah to both pupil and teacher. Haftorah: Isaiah 61:10-63:9 Here is the Haftorah HAFTORAH FRIDAY NIGHT SERVICES BEGIN AT 7:30 PM STARTING ON 9/18 Please help us create a special atmosphere by not using electronic devices (phones, cameras, games etc) in or around the synagogue on Shabbat and Holidays.

4 Please know that, unless you tell me otherwise, while I will do so anonymously, I might refer to your answer in a sermon. ROSH HASHANA SCHEDULE May each of us find 5776 to be a year of multiple blessings of health, peace, joy, and fulfillment. Shana Tovah U'metukah May the New Year be good and sweet Rabbi Michael S. Jay IMPORTANT REMINDER: PLEASE BE SURE TO Join me at 7:00 pm on Friday, September 11, 2015 as we have a special healing service to kick off the New Year. Each person will have a few minutes of private time with me at the ark to talk or to quietly reflect. We started this tradition last year and found it to be quite moving. KOL HAKAVOD CAMPAIGN Please consider being a part of this campaign to supplement the clergy needs of our congregation. This is a separate, voluntary commitment and is additional to our low annual dues obligation. HERE IS THE LINK TO BRING UP THE DONATION FORM KOL HAKAVOD THE WEEK THAT WAS... 5 4:00 PM Family Service 7:30 PM Erev Second Day of Rosh Hashana Service Friday night's dinner celebration of the 60th Anniversary of Sisterhood President Vivian Fitts and her husband Marvin was a huge success, thanks to the vision of Lori Sherry. Thanks to those who set everything up for the evening: Judy Abend, Helyn Benjamin, Jackie Avondoglio, Judy Smith and Marcia Nelson. Tuesday, September 15 9:00 AM Morning Service 11:00 AM Children's Program Taschlich at Spray Beach Yacht Club immediately following service Information about Yom Kippur, Sukkot and Simchat Torah Services can be found on the JCC of LBI web site: As Vivian wrote to a friend a few days after "We are definitely still feeling the love. Still on cloud nine." BREAK FAST Saturday evening a crowd of 60 people came to synagogue for the Selichot Service (and the "make your own sundaes"). Havdallah was very special in the social hall as the lights were dimmed and the youngsters present held the twisted Havdallah candles. An interesting talk by Sharon Hammerman on Jewish women of Europe was followed by Selichot services during which synagogue members changed the torah mantles - including our two new torahs - and a poignant service was led by Rabbis Jay & Hammerman with robust support by our frequent visitor and cantor Zack Rosenberg. A wonderful beginning to the upcoming September 23, 2015 FOLLOWING NEILAH SERVICES $18 per person SEE THIS FOR DETAILS BREAKFAST YAHRZEITS FOR NEXT
