1 November January 2015!Cheshvan - KISLEV - TEVET - Shevat 5775 BULLETIN JEWISH COMMUNITY CENTER of LONG BEACH ISLAND N e w s l e t t e r Torah Project is Underway The JCC of LBI currently has three Torahs for use during our services, in addition to the Holocaust Torah on display in the lobby. The three Torahs were inspected recently to make sure they were kosher for normal ritual use. A Torah becomes unusable if the letters that make up the words fade so that they cannot be properly recognized. This inspection should be done every few years but had not been done for these Torahs in many years. A word first about the use of the Torahs in our Services: The central portion of each Saturday and Holiday morning is the opening of the Holy Ark, the removal of one (or more, for certain Holidays) Torah, and the reading of the appropriate section for that occasion. The Torah is then returned to the Ark, and we look forward to the next occasion to hear the words of the Torah. Our Torah readers, Howard Hait and Sol Yarmush, alternate in doing an exceptional job of reading the Torah to the congregation. Returning to the inspection issue, which was first performed by a committee consisting of Rabbi Jay, Don Pripstein, Howard Hait, and Harold Farin, and subsequently by a Torah Scribe, Neil Yerman, it was ascertained that all three Torahs are in need of some repair. One, donated by the Shapiro family in memory of Jenny Shapiro, needs cleaning, repair of pages that have become loose, and new handles (rollers). Another, also donated by the Shapiros, in memory of Morris Shapiro, also needs new handles (the current handles are too small), and it has some fading letters that will have to be re-inked after the Torah is cleaned. The third Torah (which we call it the Levine Torah) needs the most repair and has the largest number of fading letters. It also must be cleaned and have the broken handles replaced. Our plan is to have both of the Shapiro Torahs repaired shortly after the High Holiday season. The Shapiro family has kindly offered to pay for these repairs, and their continued support is greatly appreciated. The third Torah will not be repaired at this time. The cost of repairing that Torah must be weighed against the cost of acquiring a newer replacement Torah. Even if the Torah is not repaired, it still can be carried in the Simchat Torah procession. We may have a sponsor for a newer Torah. (A brand new Torah would be extremely expensive. It is common to obtain a kosher, certified Torah that has been used by another synagogue.) A Spring fundraiser is under consideration. We have space for five Torahs in our Ark, so we may wish to acquire two Torahs to complete our set. More information about the Torah Project will be provided as the committee s work continues. Information on WHAT S INSIDE THIS ISSUE can be found on Page 2

2 Words from the Rabbi... On LBI, time is marked in many ways. There is a summer season and an off season. There are seasonal rentals, monthly rentals, and weekly rentals. There is Memorial Day to Labor Day. There is high tide and low tide. There are traffic lights on and traffic lights blinking. Each day is marked from sunrise to sunset. It is this last marker of time on which I wish to focus. In our tradition, we pray three times a day. The recitation of morning prayers and evening prayers are guided by the times the sun comes up and when it goes down. The light of a new days brings myriad possibilities; it enables us to see, in full form, what might previously have only been a vague and shapeless shadow., Why do I point this out? In the creation story, God s first action -- the very first thing the Deity does -- is to create light. What does light symbolize? In the creation story, it is a starting point. Everything else that happens only occurs after, and perhaps because of, that initial light. Is that first light physical? Is it the light of an idea? Is it the light of an ideal? Is it the explosion of the Big Bang? The answer is hard to say. But what cannot be denied is that, after that point, after light is created, everything changed dramatically. We learn from this that light is powerful indeed. Light is central to our tradition. Through the desert, God led the Israelites in a pillar of fire. God told Moses to create a Menorah that would be constantly lit in the Tabernacle. One of the Ten Plagues involved the complete absence of light. We have been charged with the task of being a Light unto the nations (Isaiah 49:6). The light we as a people are intended to be is, I believe, inextricably tied to that first light. Whatever pure, beautiful idea or energy was made tangible by that light, it is in each of us. Our tradition also teaches us that we can be this light by living a Inside This Issue... In truth, I am not so certain that the way to live a life can be broken down into aphorisms; however, I do know that the things we do, the actions we take or do not take, comprise who we are and how we are viewed by others. It is our actions that will either make us a beacon to those around us or merely a flashlight with a dead battery. The next big holiday we will celebrate is Hanukkah. This year we light the first candle on Tuesday, December 16. Over the course of 8 days, we will light our menorahs. We will add a candle each night to increase the intensity of the light s -- and our own -- glow. While we teach that it only takes one small candle to turn darkness into light, the brighter the light, the more we can snuff the darkness out. When Moses was called by God to return to Egypt to free the Israelites from Slavery, God s chosen sign was a burning bush, a bush that was on fire, but was not consumed by the flames. It was a bush that literally gave off a special light. Because Moses saw that bush and approached it, and said: Hineni, I am here to do God s bidding, the course of history was changed forever. Our menorahs, when lit, are no less meaningful than the burning bush; they are no less powerful than that first light. This year, as we ponder them, let us each view the Hanukkah flames as a call to connect, as a beacon beckoning us to take a step toward repairing the world. In this way, the next time God says: Let there be Light, that light will be us. Chag Urim Sameach (A Happy Festival of Lights)! 2 Rabbi Michael S. Jay

Leslie Dinkfelt Office Staff...Jeri Riffle Computer Admin....Marcie Deutsch The President s Message Because so many of our members worship at other congregations, here are excerpts from my Yom Kippur message YOM KIPPUR, L Shana Tova -- Two months ago I agreed to a fourth two-year term as President of the JCC of LBI. I did this because I feel so strongly about being a significant part of this congregation s continued success. The job of being President seems always to be about asking for money or asking for volunteers. And that is so. Because, to keep our congregation going in a way that we like, it takes money, and it takes volunteers. I will ask for both. The fastest growing congregations among our Christian friends seem to be Fundamentalists, and most require tithing of money, time, and talent. I am just asking you for a LITTLE of each. We still need your support in raising more money. I spoke at Rosh Hashanah about our High Holiday Appeal. Our dues are still very low in comparison with other congregations. Many have several levels of dues structure and encourage members to raise to a higher level than the already high basic dues. This allows the budget to be met and to subsidize the dues of some members whose financial situations make it difficult. Rather than a higher dues appeal, we do this through our High Holiday Appeal and our new KOL HAKAVOD program. Kol Hakavod was initiated this year to provide additional help to support the growing obligations of our clergy and facility. Its Chai Level is a pledge of $600/year over a 3-year period. If you are able, please join the 19 members who are already participating. And, If you haven t yet done so, please get your High Holiday blue pledge card and payment in to the office as quickly as possible. And, as I requested, please make it a MEANINGFUL one. Our congregation continues to grow. We have many dedicated people chairing activities. I am not going to identify any, because I know I would miss some. We still need volunteers for such projects as mailings, kitchen help, bazaars, and other events. I would like to talk about some other areas of volunteering which involve your working on a committee with others. In 2014, we had a very successful program of all kinds of activities. We are a congregation, but we are also a Jewish Community Center. This took a lot of work. We need lots of help in identifying and planning future SOCIAL and FUNDRAISING activities for next year and beyond. These can include raffles, auctions, dances, entertainers, cultural events, bingo, and other possible things we haven t even thought of yet. Our CARING committee can use additional volunteers to check on older, single members, to visit shut-ins, and to do some shopping or other errands when necessary. Please step up and help perform this mitzvah. The JCC has an incredibly talented group of members. Many are or were successful in business or a profession. Many of you served as President or other Officer or Board member in another congregation or organization. Many have expertise in legal, accounting, insurance, or computer matters. And because of these past successes, many are in a position to contribute additional money or are retired and have the time to offer much needed advice. I am not asking you to devote the many hours necessary to take a key position at the JCC. While many of us in leadership here have also done that and served before, I understand when you say, Done that, been there, don t want to get that involved. 3 Continued on Page 9

An information sheet with your address information and yahrzeit information will also be included in the mailing. Please return these as well as any corrections. You can also download the membership form from our website: If you haven t yet done so, you can still order magnetic name tags by sending $5/ tag along with the names desired. We are also taking orders for the JCC Polo Shirt. The order will be placed in the spring for delivery in May. Our 2015 Membership Directory will include a section of advertisements. If you are interested in participating, please so indicate on your response. In order to keep our records correct, please indicate the amount of money being sent for dues and for the directory ads. Expenses by the JCC for 2015 begin in January. We would appreciate receiving your dues payment at the beginning of the year. Also, if you have not yet responded to our High Holiday Appeal, please do so and mark your check accordingly. Happy Hanukkah! First candle is December 16th It takes a tremendous amount of energy, strength and diverse talent to plan for the New Year. Todah Raba to the office staff: Leslie, Jeri, and Marcie prepared the canvas by making sure that the Book of Remembrance was complete, answered a plethora of phone calls, and did many other things. Thank you to all the people who helped set up the Sanctuary and the Social Hall, schlepped books, and proactively did anything else they saw needed to be done. Kudos to Harold Farin, Stan Berman, Howard Hait, Sol Yarmush, Rose Valentine and Sherry Jay for all of their Bimah and Torah knowledge and skill. I want to acknowledge our Board President, Don Pripstein. He was at every Service, chanted the Haftorah on the second day of Rosh Hashanah and kept announcements short! I also want to express thanks to Carl Tepper and Bonnie Farin for stepping up to the plate, pinch-hitting for the Chiltons as our Shofar blowers. Last, but not least, thank you to Rabbi Jay and Cantor Green for making the Days of Awe so inspiring. May we all be inscribed for a Healthy and Prosperous New Year! Carole Nunberg 4

THE PLEDGE by Leonard Slater -- This is a true account of how some American industrialists smuggled arms into Israel before the 1948 war. THE PASSOVER PLOT by Dr. Hugh Schonfeld -- A little known speculative book about how the crucifixion could have been staged THE PRIME MINISTERS by Yehuda Avner -- A front row seat to the drama of Israeli statecraft. We installed a security camera system at the JCC last month. Thanks to Vivian Fitts, Sisterhood President, and the entire Sisterhood for all their hard work which enables them to financially sponsor the installation of our new security system. This is a great addition to our overall security at the JCC. We installed a total of 10 cameras, 9 of which are outside. The one inside is focused on the front lobby door. This will give the office staff a viewing of who's walking in and out of the front doors. There is a 40-inch flat screen TV hung on the wall in the office. The security cameras do not run in reaction to motion, but, rather, they run 24/7, 365 days a year. The recording of the security cameras will be on a rolling 30 day memory. These are also night vision cameras and video can be viewed from an outside source. JCC of LBI Polo Shirts We have had a lot of interest in the JCC collared polo shirts. They are a royal blue with the JCC of LBI logo and "The Place to Be" embroidered on the left front. We are waiting until the Spring to take orders and payment and hope to have sample sizes in the office. The shirts are $25.00 each. 7

8 SATURDAY MORNINGS NOW through MAY While we don't have regular Saturday morning services scheduled from the beginning of November until next May, Rabbi Jay will be at the JCC most Saturday mornings at 10:00 am. At that time, he will be conducting a study class for anyone who attends, with topics ranging from the Torah portion of the week, to the liturgy, to theology. Additionally, the Rabbi will gladly accommodate requests for specific topics. Everyone is invited to join the learning! TD BANK AFFINITY PROGRAM TD Bank will make a donation to the JCC based on the number of participants in our program. If you have an account with any TD Bank branch, sign up to participate with the JCC of LBI. The JCC never knows anything more than who the participants are and never knows anyone s balances. Contact Lynn Berkowitz at (609) or at lovelynn1@optonline.net if you have any problem doing this at your local branch. Help Plant a Tree! Bar Mitzvah of AJ Irwin As AJ Irwin approaches this significant moment in his life, he and his parents, Staci and Rick, are reflecting on the intensity with which he has approached all of his endeavors since he was an infant. From the perpetual moving of his feet, through his years of frenetic energy as a young boy, to the redirection of his energy toward sports and his studies, AJ has never been complacent. Along with the physical energy, there is a sensitive and compassionate side to him. During the process of preparing for his bar mitzvah, AJ has drawn on these attributes as he proudly achieves this rite of passage. His hard work and dedication can t go without mention. Looking back on his journey toward becoming a Bar Mitzvah, AJ s personality showed through. He studied and managed his time with maturity and dedication. He worked with preschool children with disabilities for his mitzvah project. As he worked with the young students, he could see things from a different perspective -now, as the teacher and role model. He has a new sense of responsibility and dedication. AJ has been going to the JCC of LBI since he was 3 years old. His teacher and role model has always been a constant, Mrs. Lynn Berkowitz or Miss B. AJ s bar mitzvah will be held at the JCC of LBI on Saturday, November 22nd, at 9:30 am. We have begun the first phase of the landscaping of the JCC with the planting of nine crepe myrtles on the Boulevard side of the property. If you would like to help to underwrite the cost of these trees, a donation of $500 per tree would be greatly appreciated. We have received donations for six of the nine trees. There will be appropriate recognition of your gift in the landscaping. Please send your gift to the JCC office and mark it as "Plant a Tree." 8

9 Continued from Page 3 President s Message... But what I don t understand is when, in your retirement with some time on your hands over the summer here, you won t agree to give a few hours of your valuable advice. We can certainly use it, and would greatly appreciate it. There will be lots to do next year, and I hope all members will be a part of it. In this report, I am NOT TALKING to a congregation of over 300 people. I am talking to EACH of you, individually. I am asking YOU, and YOU, and YOU specifically to help by contributing YOUR monies and YOUR time. And by asking you as an individual for your help, I hope I will get an INDIVIDUAL response, not just a group response of ignoring these requests. Celebrate at the JCC of LBI! Planning a wedding?? Celebrating a brit or a baby naming?? Having a party?? Celebrating a simcha?? Holding a meeting?? Consider our beautiful JCC for your venue... Our sanctuary, with its magnificent stained-glass windows, is a wonderful setting for your religious ceremony!! You have HEARD me speak. Hopefully you have LISTENED to me. If you did, that means you will get your High Holiday Appeal gift in, and, if you haven t done so, you will make a Building Fund pledge, and, if possible, you will participate in Kol HaKavod, and that you will be generous in these. That means you will continue, or begin, volunteering for the many things at the JCC that must be done. That means you will attend services on occasion. That means you will say YES when asked to be part of one of our many activities. In closing, please read our congregation Bulletins and our weekly Shabbat Reminders to keep informed on what is happening at the JCC. And periodically check our web-site. You will be amazed at all the information it contains. Please call the office to tell us what committees or events you can volunteer for. Don t TELL me, because I will forget, but you can me or call the office. In this Holy Day season of Repentance, Reflection, and Generosity, step up and do your part by contributing time, talent and money. Pledge to be a significant part of our NO, YOUR JCC of LBI. Thank you for listening, and I wish you the best of everything good, especially HEALTH, in the coming year for YOU and YOUR family from ME and MINE. 11 SHOP-RITE SCRIP AVAILABLE at JCC Help the JCC earn free money by purchasing Shop-Rite gift cards from the JCC of LBI Office. The Acme will be closed all winter for construction, so here is an opportunity for those who normally shop there to participate in this fundraiser. Just imagine what we could raise if everyone used these cards whenever they shop at Shop-Rite. Use these $25 cards to do your shopping or as gifts to others for happy occasions, or to someone in need. Scrip will now be available at other locations, in addition to the synagogue office: o! and, o on the mainland,in Barnegat, with Jeri Riffle ( ), on the northern part of the island, with Rona Stein ( ). BE A MINYANAIRE! As a FULL SERVICE congregation, it is important for us to provide the opportunity each week for our members to say Kaddish for Yahrzeits being observed during the following week. We are asking members who are in the area on Friday evenings during the winter months to commit to at least one, and hopefully two, Friday evening services each month. It is not too much to ask you to commit about 2 hours a month for this Mitzvah. Consider it your obligated Jewry Duty. We need you for Jewry Duty. Volunteer to be a Minyanaire. It s a mitzvah. Kol HaKavod Program The JCC of LBI thanks the 21 donors who have responded to the Kol HaKavod Campaign. They have been listed monthly in the donation section of our Bulletin. Our goal is to raise $20,000 each year, with funds dedicated to support the growing obligations of our clergy and facility. We are pleased that, since our initial appeal in March, we have received pledges and gifts for 2014 of $13,200. We hope you will consider a yearly pledge to this fund. The following three categories have been created. This is a separate commitment, and it is in addition to our low annual dues obligation. Chai Level: $1,800 over three years ($600 a year) Double Chai Level: $3,600 over three years ($1,200 a year) Triple Chai Level: $5,400 over three years ($1,800 a year) We will, of course, be grateful for a gift to the fund at any time. You may download the form for making a gift to this fund by clicking on our web site or by picking up the form at the JCC Office. Please feel free to contact Rose Valentine, Kol HaKavod Chair, with any questions. JCC of LBI Caps We are very excited about the response to the new JCC caps medium blue or navy, embroidered with the JCC of LBI logo and "The Place to Be. They are $15 each and are available at the JCC office and at all JCC events. So, get your cap while the supply lasts! Thanks to Judy and Harold Einhorn for making the connection with their son Bruce, who re-designed the logo and got us 100 caps so quickly. 11

If you are planning to initiate or change your will or estate plan, please remember and include the Jewish Community Center of Long Beach Island (JCC of LBI) as part of your legacy. The monies can be used for a specific purpose as designated by you or added to an endowment fund already set up to assure the ability to continue providing a full-service congregation to serve the Jewish people of the area. This legacy can be accomplished by a simple bequest in your will, by one of the allowable charitable trusts wherein you get an immediate tax advantage, or through life insurance. PLEASE DO IT NOW! Please check with your attorney or insurance agent. If you have any questions or need additional information, please contact Don Pripstein. Thank you. 14

18 Summary of the Board Meeting on September 9, 2014 Attendees: Lynn Berkowitz, Harold Farin, Vivian Fitts, Sherry Fruchterman, Paula Hait, Carole Nunberg, Stuart Pepose Don Pripstein, Jeri Riffle, Mickey Sherry, Lori Shomer, Rose Valentine, *Rabbi Michael Jay *Participated via phone A copy of 2014 budget information by months will be distributed. D. Pripstein asked the Board to review the 2014 income and expenses by month and send suggested changes to R. Morgan by . R. Morgan hopes to present a preliminary 2015 budget by month at our October meeting. D. Pripstein noted that S. Fruchterman suggested giving Shop Rite scrip to two residents in the north and south ends of the island, and one on the mainland. R. Valentine said that this is a great time to do this as Acme is closing this week. D. Pripstein noted that while we are paying a few people to help with set-up/ clean-up, he hopes that there will still be volunteers to help out in many ways. D. Pripstein noted that, in 2012, we talked about giving pro-rated dues structure for new members who join at end of year. Will reconsider at a future meeting. R. Valentine, discussed the placing of words above the Tree of Life, and made it clear in her proposal why we want to do this. After much discussion, the motion to do so passed unanimously. H. Farin and his committee looked at Torahs and found that all need to be reconditioned. Board approved $1500 to have a scribe inspect and make recommendations. We will need sponsors and have a fundraising campaign to repair and/or replace torahs in S. Fruchterman said that we are a board of people. She thinks we should propose a minimum number of meetings that Board members must attend. S. Fruchterman reported that 8 additional Sanctuary chairs are ordered. It looks like they will arrive during the third week in October. C. Nunberg reported that, so far, we have 331 seats sold, so we have lots of room. To date, seats have brought in $32,305, and the Book of Remembrance $5,398. It was stated that we need to let people know that they must respect details and deadlines. L. Shomer reported that the Elayne Boosler program was a success. She noted that people are going to have to take ownership of events. We had too many programs this summer. M. Sherry reports that safety and security are high on his list because of what is going on around us (in the world). Nine cameras have been installed with night vision. These are really good cameras that take great pictures. Yahrzeit Boards have been installed and look great. R. Valentine reported that 6 of the 9 trees on the boulevard have been underwritten. She will work on how to mark the trees donors. R. Valentine reported that 68 caps have been sold. We are taking orders for polo shirts. V. Fitts reported that Sisterhood had a successful year. The older freezer died last weekend. It is years old. It was heating up inside and out, and they will have to buy a new one. L. Berkowitz reported that school has started. McKinley Elementary will now be charging us to use their space. There will be a bar mitzvah in November and a b nai mitzvah in June. There will be three confirmands in May. There are two in pre-school, and three in mid-week Hebrew. There are also three who are attending post-confirmation. L. Berkowitz reported that the bazaars made over $12,000. L. Berkowitz will be installed as a member of the OC Federation board. We donated a mezuzah for their new building. D. Pripstein reported that, as of yesterday, we sold $7600 in 50/50 tickets. 18
