Here at the JCC of LBI we will Hear about what is going on in the State of Israel. On June 26, following the Welcome Back Brunch, Dr. Eric Mandel will be returning to give us an update on Israel. Dr. Mandel is the founder and Director of MEPINTM, the Middle East Political and Information NetworkTM, a private Middle East research analysis read by members of Congress, their foreign policy advisors, members of the Knesset, journalists, and organizational leaders. Dr. Mandel regularly briefs members of the Congress ad their staffs about the current geo-political situation in the Middle East and meets with members of the Israeli leadership and their advisors. He is the Northeast Co-Chair of StandWithUs, an international organization dedicated to educating the public about Israel while also fighting the BDS movement (Boycott, Divest and Sanction) against Israel. Those who have heard Dr. Mandel in the past can attest that this program will be worthwhile attending. His topic for June 26 is Israel s Challenges in Dr. Eric Mandel Two Friday evening services this summer will also include presentations on Israel. On July 22, join us for a special American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) presentation entitled What s Next for the US-Israel Relationship? featuring Jackie Kelly, AIPAC New Jersey Associate Director. And on August 12, Professor Ehud Behar of the Technion -- Israel Institute of Technology -- will speak to the congregation. Dr. Behar has distinguished himself in the field of high-energy astrophysics and space research. He has titled his talk The University the Turned Israel into a Start-Up Nation. The JCC of LBI is grateful to David Shatz for arranging these programs.

2 Words from the Rabbi... When I first became Rabbi of the JCC, I had two primary goals. The first was to bring the Jewish tradition, with its nuanced beauty, to our eclectic JCC community in a comfortable and meaningful way. The second was to build and to strengthen the JCC together with the larger Jewish community on and around our beautiful Island. No doubt, these are worthy goals, but how does one achieve them? Our tradition provides some guidelines gleaned over its long history, but, today, we also need to figure out new ways to create, build, and nurture community. Shavuot, when boiled down to its core, is about creating a Jewish people and a Jewish nation. The basic formula that G-d used was to bring people together and give them something in common to live by. For the Israelites, a past commonality was inherently built-in because of their 400+ years as slaves. But G-d understood the need to create a present and future bond. The giving of the Torah, as a historical text and a guidebook for how to live our lives, created a structure upon which to build and strengthen that community. I have striven to create services that synthesize our tradition with learning, comfort, and a sense of belonging. The hope is that people who join us at services feel as if the mellow that comes with being at the beach has infiltrated our beautiful building. But what goes on within the confines of our sanctuary does not alone build and strengthen community. So how do we do we accomplish this task? In addition to the tasks I already regularly perform as your Rabbi, I have a basic two-part plan to achieve this goal. First, by going out and meeting people where they are and when they are ready. Secondly, I will actively be seeking input from those who are already a part of our community. A while ago I wrote a Shabbat Message which questioned why the Torah was delivered at Mount Sinai. I posited that Sinai was not actually chosen. Rather, G-d made a determination that the Israelites were ready to receive the Torah, and they just happened to be at Sinai at that moment. To this point, I wrote: Thus, it was not the place, but the moment; a moment not wholly dictated by G-d, but by a time when both G-d and [the] people were ready. Thus, the interaction between G-d and His people is not only by dictation and command, but also through a connectedness that merges the two. Over this past year, I have been piloting a program that I call the Roaming Rabbi. As the Roaming Rabbi, I set myself up in public spaces on and around the Island and meet with folks. In so doing, I seek people out where they are and speak with them when they are ready. Just as G-d gave the Torah when our ancestors were ready, this endeavor helps me to connect folks with the JCC where they are and when they are ready. This has proven itself to be a great way of meeting and learning about people in and around LBI. (Check the JCC calendar to see where I will be and when.) The second part of this plan is equally important. Our congregation is comprised of many people from many different places. They have many interests, but they also have a wide array of ideas and talents. One of my tasks as the Rabbi and spiritual leader of our JCC is to help to create and support religious, educational, and cultural programming that helps connect us spiritually and to create kinship. I believe that one of the best sources for determining the shape and scope of this programming is our diverse congregant universe. There is a Midrash that illustrates what it is that I am trying to accomplish. The Midrash states: Rabbi Hanina said: Torah is like a deep well full of water whose waters were cold and sweet and delicious, but no one was able to drink from it. Then a certain person came along, and supplied the well with one cord tied to another, one rope tied to another, and drew water out of the well, and drank from it. Then everyone began to draw water and drink it (Shir HaShirim Rabbah 1.1:8). Our JCC is like the well in the Midrash, and our congregants and their ideas and thoughts are the sweet and delicious water. I am hopeful that together we can tie cord and rope together and draw water out of the well. In order to do this, I intend to reach out to as many of our members as possible. I want to speak with you 2 Continued on Page 15

3 The President s Message It used to be that 65 was the beginning of Old Age. I don t think that is true anymore. Some might say it begins at 67 or 68, but I don t believe that is true either. I am not going to get into a political debate as to when Social Security should begin, but I believe a more accurate number for the onset of old age is now 70 or even 75. Those of us older than 75 have lived a lot longer than our life expectancy at birth. Many of us have children who are or are approaching 65, and we aren t old enough to have children that are old age. Thanks to modern medicine, surgical procedures, and other reasons, we are living longer. In our parents or grandparents generations, a 50 th wedding anniversary was unusual. Now it is common. Look around at the JCC of LBI. Not only do we have many members in my current definition of old age -- but a large number of our most active members are in that category. Also, many of our activities and committees are chaired by these members. This just proves that as old, we don t have to just sit back and let others do for us. While we do have many of our middle aged members taking active roles in our congregation, we need more. If we are to continue our growth in membership and activities, it is time for more of our year olds to pick up the mantle. I am asking you to do so. Editor...Paula Hait Office Manager... Leslie Dinkfelt Office Staff...Jeri Riffle Computer Admin....Marcie Deutsch Please contact me, another Board member, or an activity chairperson and offer your help. The JCC of LBI needs you. We are now through another winter season, and I am proud to say that our experiment to provide year round Shabbat morning services has been a huge success. Our thanks go to Stuart Pepose who strongly pushed for this, to Rabbi Jay, to those members and friends who attended, and to those who helped conduct parts of the service or lead the Adult Study when Rabbi Jay was away. As Judith and I, along with our many members who are away for the winter months, return to the Island and its adjacent areas, we look forward to greeting you and having another successful and active busy season. I began this message with talk about age, so let me end on the same note. Jewish tradition teaches that 70 is a typical life span, and therefore the 70 th anniversary of a person s Bar or Bat Mitzvah is cause for celebration and thanks. On Saturday, May 14 th, I will give thanks for reaching this milestone. Everyone is always invited to attend our services, and y all are invited to share this date with me and my family. I will be conducting the entire service, as I did at my Orthodox shul in Wilkes-Barre. Please join me for the service, and for the Kiddush after. Shalom, Don Pripstein Security Note: Because of security issues and concerns with other Ocean County congregations, we will keep the 24th St. door (closest to Condo) locked. For all services, you are requested to enter the building either through the Handicapped Entrance at the Handicapped Ramp or the front doors. 3

5 In Memory of Vivian Fitts The JCC of LBI and its Sisterhood have lost their true Woman of Valor, Vivian Fitts, who passed away in March after a brief illness. Vivian s efforts on behalf of the synagogue and especially her beloved Sisterhood were bottomless, and everyone with whom she worked felt loved and appreciated by her words and hugs. The Sisterhood acknowledges donations made in Vivian s memory by the following: Marion and James Bagnel Stephen & Barbara Banyacski Norma Chodorov Sally & Paul Clinton Marvin & Elyse Diamond Harold & Judy Einhorn Alison Friedman Howard & Paula Hait Martha Hasbrouck Jeanine & Robert Henderson Diane and Barnett Hoffman Joy Kern Audrey and Jay London Gerri & Steve Luloff Donna Mullins Carol Britchkow Nunberg Amleto Poggi Lynn & Cary Reimer Jeri & Ben Riffle Barbara & Paul Sand Lori & Mickey Sherry Lori and Danny Shomer Judy Smith & Howard Tomar Allan & Donna Starr Mark & Sherry Starr Rosie Starr Rona Stein Carl & Elaine Steinberg Farid & Carol Klein Touati Karen & Michael Widico Volume 8 / Issue 4 TD BANK Affinity Program TD Bank has a program offering an easy way for nonprofit organizations to raise additional money. The bank will make an annual contribution to us based on the number of members with accounts there. Here is an opportunity to raise additional dollars each year with no out-of-pocket cost from any of us. All we have to do is have our members let the bank know that they are JCC participants. The Bank will do the rest. Your privacy continues as is. The Bank will not divulge any individual member s information to JCC or anyone else. Please call your TD Bank office and let them know that you are a JCC participant. PLEASE REGISTER ALL YOUR PERSONAL ACCOUNTS AS WELL AS YOUR BUSINESS CHECKING ACCOUNTS, AND DO IT NOW, SO THE AFFINITY PROGRAM FOR JCC CAN COMMENCE. 5 Annual Interfaith Service The Jewish Community Center of Long Beach Island will again host the Annual Sabbath Interfaith Service at 7:30 p.m. on Friday May 6. Rabbi Michael Jay will lead the service with the help of any and all clergy who attend and wish to participate. Father John Frambes, O.F.M., from St. Francis Parish in Brant Beach, will deliver the sermon at this year s service. Father Frambes joined the Franciscans in 1973 and, in his own words, says his religious journey is one of zigzagging toward God. He has worked in student affairs and campus ministry at Siena College, Loudonville, NY and has also served in campus ministry at Guilford College (Quaker) and UNCG in North Carolina. Later, he was pastor of St. Joseph Church (African American) in Wilmington, DE. He came to LBI after spending time living in a Trappist monastery. Since 2014, Father John has served as a parochial vicar at St. Francis Parish. There will also be a musical presentation by the Island Singers, led by Polly Moore. An interfaith liturgy created especially for this service (in English) will be used and, as always, the JCC s Sisterhood will offer light refreshments afterward. Through this service and other local interfaith programs, we hope to continue building bridges of understanding for the good of the entire community.

7 Purim Celebrated with Megillah, Hamantaschen...and FUN Lynn Berkowitz is delighted to report a thoroughly delightful Purim with the exception of the hanging of Haman With 25 people in attendance, they enjoyed baked ziti, pizza, tuna, and tossed salad followed by hamantashen (made by the students of the Religious School) and an ice cream bar. Some brave folks came in costume, and they all listened to the creative reading of the Megillah by Rabbi Jay with only one short break to watch another magnificent sunset from the top of the JCC steps. Participants included: Sheila and Harris Weisel, Ina and Ira Morgenthal, Lewis Becker and his companion, Rochelle Spencer, Susan and Jared Sheehan, Karen and Andy Schwing, Jon Lombardi, Aaron, Zach and Kaela, Phil and Joan Lombardi, Diane and Barnett Hoffman, Richard Morgan, Carol and Mark Cohen, Rabbi and Sheri Jay, and Lynn Berkowitz. Pictures will be forthcoming from Karen and Susan. Please Help Us Make a Minyan An important obligation that a congregation has to its members is providing a minyan in times of Yahrzeit or Shiva. The JCC has been pretty good about this, but we must try to do better. Minyans are sometimes needed at the JCC or at Shiva homes on LBI or the mainland. We have prepared a list of names along with telephone numbers and addresses of those that agree to being called periodically to perform this mitzvah. There is no obligation to attend each time called, but we hope you will participate periodically. The more volunteers we have, the fewer time each will have to be called. Harris Weisel has agreed to be our Minyan Coordinator. He will contact people by phone or when necessary. Please let the office know if we can add your name or names to this list. As an egalitarian congregation, we are interested in males and females. Volunteers who are in the area all year or only in the summer are needed. Consider this like a bank account -- having a sufficient number of names available helps assure that a minyan can be provided when needed by you. Look for information this summer on a class to make you more familiar with the Shiva Service and on its customs. Don t delay. BE A MINYANAIRE. Help perform this mitzvah by contacting the Office NOW at (609) or jccoflbi@gmail.com. JCC of LBI Religious School It is so incredible when I think that we are winding up this academic year It has been a great year of learning in growing. So far, we have given four blue books for Bar/Bat Mitzvah preparation. We have acquired a couple of new students. Since the model Seder, we are looking forward to the ISRAEL 68 at the Blue Claws on Sunday, May 15, and then, on Lag B Omer, Miniature Golf. Our last session is on June 5, which is Yom Yerusalayim and is being celebrated at Temple Beth Or with the presentation by SAFAM. I have been the Educational Director since 1989 and have witnessed decreasing enrollment. What are we to do about it? I know that there are unaffiliated families in southern Ocean County because the students tell me about other public school students who celebrate the Jewish holidays. I need help in reaching them. EVERY CHILD DESERVES A JEWISH EDUCATION -- but how do we reach them? If you have any suggestions or know of a family please let me know by lovelynn1@optonline.net or by phone Lynn Berkowitz, Educational Director 7

You have left a mark in the history of the JCC, and although you may have attended during the years of the old building and the trailer, you are part of the continuum of the many students who have passed across our bimah and are part of the new Miracle on the Boulevard. I hope that you have had the opportunity to come back and tour the new building and see the familiar stained glass windows and the Shalom Menorah sconces. I am as proud of our new building as I am of each one of my prior students. The last Confirmation class expressed a desire to build a garden in honor of the many rabbis who have graced our pulpit past, present and future -- Rabbi Rosenblum, Rabbi Nunberg, Rabbi Friedman and now Rabbi Jay, to name a few. They wanted to build a garden with a bench where people could sit quietly and meditate. We have had a few generous donations to begin this project but I am still fairly short on the budget. I know that many of you barely have enough to spend on the necessities of life because you are still in college or just starting your adult life. I remember teaching you about the Jewish concept of Tzedakah and so I am asking for a small donation to buy the pergola and pavers for this project. As it says in the Sayings of our Fathers or the Pirkei Avot, it is not incumbent upon us to complete the task, but we should not avoid beginning it. Please send your donations of any amount to the JCC of LBI and indicate that your donation is for the Rabbis Garden. -- Mrs. B 9

12 JCC of LBI Sisterhood Update Ros-y: Favorable, optimistic DONATION OPPORTUNITIES Prayerbooks, Pavers, and Tree of Life Leaves can be donated in honor of events, friends or family, and Yahrzeit Plaques can be added to our Yahrzeit Board in the Sanctuary. The prices, including engraving, are: BOOKS: High Holiday prayerbook $72 Eitz Hayim Chumosh $120 YAHRZEIT PLAQUES; 1st one $250 Add'l. purchased at same time $225 Reserved $75 TREE OF LIFE: Bronze Leaf $90 Silver Leaf $126 Gold Leaf $180 PAVERS: 4 x 8 brick $150 Viv: Music Lively And there you have it. Two words, two people. Two major players who made the JCC a happy place, vibrant, and successful. Two women who will always be a part of us but who are apart from us. Rosie went to California for the winter as she has done for many years. It was decided that it was in her best health interest to move there, closer to her children. She is residing at the Melrose Gardens Assisted Living facility in Los Angeles. Her address is: 960 N. Martel Avenue, - Apartment #107 // Los Angeles, CA Rosie s direct phone number in the apartment is (323) I think that she would love to hear from you. As a cornerstone of Sisterhood for decades (Just look in the kitchen. Her imprint is everywhere.), no one was ever bored, pissed off or negative being with her. You couldn t be. Rosie is one of the smartest cookies around. Never have I met a person who was so kind, so loving and with truly a rosy personality. From the time that she was a kid in Trenton up to the present, she has been a keen observer of human nature and her intuitions are sharp. Rosie has done everything for Sisterhood that you can possibly think of President, Treasurer, chief cook and bottle washer. All done with aplomb and class. She is a mensch and a true Eyshet Chayil who encompasses all 22 lines of the blessing. Rosie is truly a Starr. We miss her already and the season hasn t even started Viv-alicious may not be in Webster s but to me it epitomizes Vivian. Never in the history of the JCC has there been a person who was so vested in the success of Sisterhood as Vivian. As Marvin stated over and over.why don t you just move your bed there I cannot imagine that there will ever be another person willing to spend as much time and energy to guarantee the success of every aspect of Sisterhood. Vivian touched everyone through her caring, kindness and persistence. She never stopped. She was always there for her friends and family with enough room left over in her heart to tend to the best interest of the JCC. She will be missed as a friend, mentor, and balebuste. So now what???? Our leadership has suffered devastating losses. Does anyone know in what direction Sisterhood is headed? Probably not. But I do know that we need to unite. We have suffered a terrible loss of leadership. Out of love and respect for Rosie and Vivian, we need to coalesce and work together to maintain the neshoma that is JCC of LBI Sisterhood. Personally, my faith in the women of the JCC is solid and that we will build on and cherish the legacy left to us. Before your summer calendar gets too filled, leave some time to commit to helping Sisterhood rebuild, re-energize, and have a re-fuah shlema. The Sisterhood kick-off meeting is on June 21. Please make every effort to attend. 12 x 12 paver $ Bonnie Farin

14 Summary of the Board Meeting on March 8, 2016 Attendees: L. Berkowitz, H. Farin, S. Fruchterman, A. Galer, B. Goldman*, P. Hait, Rabbi Jay, R. Morgan, C. Moss, C. Nunberg, S. Pepose, D. Pripstein*, J. Riffle, F. Schragger*, K. Schwing, M. Sherry*, L. Shomer, R. Valentine*, R. Van Naarden. (*Denotes on phone) Rabbi Jay said that it has been a busy few weeks. Saturday morning services have been well-attended. We have missed a few Fridays with low attendance. In January there was the cholent fest and had a great time. In February he went to the Federation meeting focusing on building community. He did a Roaming Rabbi at ACME on LBI and another at Barnegat, and he got good feedback. Additional activities in March included visits to several members. In addition he met with David Shatz and Dr. Mandel about an Israel program in the summer and attended the Purim ballet. Rabbi Jay announced that Susan Werk is prepared to come to the JCC again as a scholar in the summer of Also, the Orangetown Jewish Center will be here in the fall for a Shabbaton. R. Morgan in his financial report said that he was asked by D. Pripstein to look into developing a JCC reserve fund. He will present info on management of a reserve -- taking into account near and future needs. R. Valentine reported that the Chuppah was installed on the south wall of the social hall. She hopes it is agreed that it enhances the beauty of the synagogue, and she noted that it can easily be taken down for use. Approval was given for a new larger Zumba sign along the crepe myrtle tree line. B. Goldman reported that a concert could take place on July 24 with the pianist who played last summer at the LBI Foundation. The vote to approve this activity was unanimous in favor. J. Riffle noted that M. Sherry asked if anyone would like to be involved with House and Grounds. This is a volunteer position. M. Sherry would like to start breaking someone in, so that person can take over for him; he noted that April is a busy month. L. Berkowitz said that she got a phone call from the Manahawkin (Reform) synagogue asking if their one student could join our school. H. Farin presented a personnel report. 15 JCC of LBI Hebrew School Bowling Bash Volume 8 / Issue 4 Bowling with our guests from Sharey HaYam on Sunday, April 3 at Manahawkin Lanes. Pizza and snacks were offered to maintain our strength. Rabbi Jay bowled them over with his high score and rabbinic wisdom Please Generously Support our Advertisers The Rabbi Writes... Continued from Page 2 to hear your ideas for what might be done. Will I be able to use every idea I receive? No. But I will get a sense of what our JCC universe is looking for. Our conversations will also give you an opportunity to find out some of what I do as your Rabbi. This task will take a lot of time and energy on my part, and will require your thoughtful input, but I believe that it will be a fruitful and worthwhile endeavor for each of us individually and for the JCC as a whole. Prepare your ideas and questions We are a lucky community. We have been growing and we have been providing many things that our congregants want. But I, and we, can do much more. Help me to reach down into our well to draw out ideas that will lead our JCC to the next step in its communitybuilding journey. May we go MeKhayil Ehl khayil (from Strength to Strength).
