2 Welcoming Erica Fell as BIC s new Office Administrator We were so sorry to see Meg Wilkerson leave Beth Israel after making a tremendous contribution to our congregation, yet we rejoice with Meg, her husband Mark, and their daughter Melane as they anticipate the birth of their baby in the near future. Meg has decided to spend the majority of her time caring for her growing family, and we wish her all the best. On August 14, we welcomed Erica Fell as our new BIC Office Administrator! Originally from Lansing, Michigan, Erica has been living in Jackson for over 10 years. She has been married to her husband Tony for 7½ years and they have their hands full with three beautiful boys: Jaylon (7), Aaron (3) and Ethon (5 months). Erica received her Bachelor s Degree in Business Management from Jackson State University and her Master s Degree in Business Management from Belhaven University. She brings to her new position at Beth Israel vast experience in Human Resource Management and Executive Assistance. New BIC Office Administrator Erica Fell and her son, Aaron, who is 3 years old. Erica also owns Exceptional Affairs Wedding & Event Coordinators, for which she plans, coordinates and budgets weddings and events of all sizes. Divrei HaRav: Words from Rabbi Cohen Idon t wake up easily or well. I press snooze multiple times, I m grumpy, I growl at my dogs and cats, and please, don t talk to me. I ve given up my official alarm clock and now put my phone next to my pillow, using it as my alarm. I always hope I ll get a better result. Wake Up! This is the season where we are called to Wake Up! When the shofar sounds on Rosh Hashana, it is our signal that we are not just awakened to a new day; we are awakened to a new way of being. The symbolism of the Shofar blasts are more than just waking up; it is also about hearing - have we heard the call? Are we listening to what is inside of us, what we know to be the truth of our behavior over the past year? Are we responding to the command to turn and change? It is easy to say in the quiet space of our minds: yes, I messed up. I need to apologize and mend what has been broken. A true shofar blast knocks the voice outside our heads and forces us to wake up and listen. Hear the sound of the truth. Feel the pain of the loud ringing in our ears. Get up out of the sleepiness of avoidance and be different. That is the challenge of the shofar. If you happen to be reading this after Rosh Hashana, or even after Yom Kippur - let s face it, we ve all been When the shofar sounds on Rosh Hashana, it is our signal that we are not just awakened to a new day; we are awakened to a new way of being. complaining about how early the High Holidays are this year - the shofar blasts still call us to wake up. 4 The Sisterhood Spotlight A Message From the Sisterhood President L Shana Tova to my fellow congregants, friends and Sisterhood members. As we welcome in our New Year, I want to wish you a sweet year filled with love and good health. When our members have health issues, Sisterhood reaches out to them in many ways as a deeply caring community. This is one of the important functions of Beth Israel Sisterhood. Whether it s just a handwritten note, a meal for a family, a Shiva set-up or a hospital visit, we use our strengths to help each other overcome some life s obstacles. There are so many opportunities to get involved with Sisterhood as a way to help others. I encourage you to join this wonderful group of women if you have not already done so. We are a fun, intelligent and welcoming group with varied interests. We have lots of events planned that will surely please our members. I offer a special thank you to Marla Harbor for hosting our beautiful membership brunch. Everyone had a lovely time catching up with their friends and meeting new members. 7 School Absences Letters from Rabbi Cohen have been sent to all area schools, public and private, in the Jackson Metro area to inform them that our children will be absent on Thursday, September 5. If individual difficulties arise, please contact the Temple Office. Calling All Children All children 2 nd grade and older who are at Temple are expected to be in the sanctuary with their families for all High Holiday services. Yizkor Kaddish List During the Yizkor (Memorial) Service on Yom Kippur day, we will read the names of those who have died during the past year. The following names listed are those who have been taken from us since Yom Kippur 2012 and will be recalled during the Yizkor Service on Yom Kippur afternoon. If we inadvertently left the name of a loved one off the list or a name is misspelled, please contact the Temple Office. Beth Israel continues with the tradition of publishing a Roll of Remembrance. With your help, this simple yet dignified means of honoring the memory of our beloved departed will again become part of our Memorial Service on Yom Kippur. To include the names of your cherished departed in the Roll of Remembrance, please fill out the attached form and return it to the office no later than Friday, September 6 th. It is imperative we have this information no later than the given date. This will enable us to prepare the service booklet. We will distribute the book at the Yizkor Service on the afternoon of Yom Kippur, September 14 th. A tradition to honor the memories of our loved ones with a special Yizkor donation to the temple is customary. Let the memories of the past provide for our future. L Shanah Tovah! Please mark the appropriate days and times. Please be sure to list names and ages of child/children. DETACH AND SEND the form below. We want to provide safe, organized care for children whose parents are attending services and here s how it works: 1. Children will be divided into two age groups as follows: a) infants - 4 yrs. b) 5 yrs. - 6 yrs. Please note that siblings might not be in the same room. Lists will be posted outside of each classroom. Check these lists so you ll know to which room(s) to bring your child(ren). 2. Send a toy or book with your child. 3. Please let us know in advance if your child has any allergies we should be aware of. 4. Bring a drink and something to eat for your child. Please put his/her name on the snacks. 5. Please make sure that an adult, not an older sibling or friend, picks up your child at the conclusion of Services. 6. Children will not be permitted to go back and forth from the sanctuary to the classrooms. Your child must remain in the classrooms through the conclusion of Services. 7. Children have to be registered by Friday, August 30. We will not accept any reservations beyond this date. We will not be able to accommodate your child at the last minute. The spine of the film is the inspirational journey of Dan Nichols, a tour de force of modern Jewish music, who took his show on the road for the Jewish festival of Sukkot in October (The tour was sponsored in part by the Jacobs Camp.) Dan and his incredible band Eighteen loaded into an RV and wandered through the Deep South. Each day of Sukkot brought a new town, a unique celebration, and uplifting, sometimes heartbreaking Sukkot stories. Jacobs Camp is offering a special Dinner and a Movie Package for $36 per person - which includes a Fried Chicken dinner, Havdallah, the film screening, discussion with the film s director, and an exclusive acoustic concert by Dan Nichols. Yitro spent his childhood in Dublin and Manchester before moving to Israel in the summer of 2005, and now lives in Jerusalem. Zak s unique art style, which combines geometrical forms and Jewish concepts, can be seen at his online gallery (www. zakyitro.com). Zak has exhibited his works widely throughout New York, Jerusalem and Manchester and has begun a 4 year degree in Photography at Hadassah College in Jerusalem. 13 URJ s 72nd North American Biennial is the largest Jewish gathering in North America! The Biennial will bring together 5,000 Jewish lay leaders and professionals, congregants, and clergy to learn, pray, share ideas, and make decisions about the future of Jewish life. The Women of Reform Judaism s Assembly will gather concurrently.
