1 ig LIGHTS PUBLISHED MONTHLY NO. 5 MAY 2013 Divrei HaRav: Words from Rabbi Cohen We as Jews are often called the People of the Book, but we should really be called the People of the Books. Every synagogue I have ever visited has a library; rabbis' offices are rated on a scale of how many bookcases they have; and most Jews have their own personal Jewish library. We also have a library at Beth Israel and it is used for many purposes in addition to housing books. But let s be honest with ourselves: it s a mess, and has been for years. That is about to change. We have just hired a summer intern with the goal of overhauling our library. Our intern, Merrit Corrigan, is a rising junior at Millsaps College. She will begin after Memorial Day and spend most of June and July sorting through the books, determining which ones to keep under the guidance of our newly formed library committee, finding homes for the displaced books, looking for library software, cleaning, and reorganizing our collection and more. You can look forward to learning more about Merrit in the June Chailights, where she will share her story and give us her thoughts on this project. By the fall, my hope is that we will have a library that is accessible, books that can be checked out, a collection that can be viewed and searched over the internet (password protected), and a library/sanctuary/meeting space that is once again clutter-free. If you have any suggestions for our library project, please don t hesitate to contact me. And when you drop by the temple during our summer office hours, be sure to introduce yourself to Merrit and welcome her to our congregational community. Students asked Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev: Why does every tractate of the Talmud begin on the second page? He replied: However much we learn, we should always remember that we have not even reached to the first page Confirmation May 10, :15 pm Avery Cohen Jacob Craig Katie Fijman Nina Humphrey Ashley Rubinsky Jacob Schipper Justin Schlakman 5315 OLD CANTON ROAD JACKSON, MISSISSIPPI PHONE FAX Founded 1860 A member of the Union for Reform Judaism, Serving Reform Congregations in North America

This person knew I was the Rabbi at Beth Israel, as I m a regular at this particular spa. When I told her I did, she wanted to share with me how impressed she was with Will Leonard. Will is Melanie s oldest child, Mary Golde and Bill Howell s grandson. He is a Senior at St. Andrews High School and will be attending Mississippi State in the fall. Apparently, this woman s daughter was friends with Will, and she wanted to make sure she told me how kind Will had been to her daughter. She had never seen a young man be so much of a gentleman before not like Will. In fact, she had been waiting for me to return to the shop just so she could share this information. I wasn t surprised. I remembered the days when I sat with Will studying for his Bar Mitzvah. He was polite, courteous, and always prepared. Will is a great role model for his brother Reed and for other young people in general. If Will s kind behavior is a yardstick of his success, he has a lot to look forward to. We wish Will and all of our other seniors a Mazel Tov on your graduation and good luck in your first year in college. 3

4 The Sisterhood Spotlight Looking back on a very busy year, I am so thrilled to have gone through the journey with all of you. We just finished a very successful Bazaar, and I cannot express enough my sincerest gratitude to everyone involved. The volunteers who helped make this year a success are too many to count. I know we all want our Sisterhood to continue to thrive and accomplish the goals we set forth. There are many opportunities to get involved in our community, which enriches your membership and your life. I am always available to chat, and I welcome the opportunity to work with new and longtime members alike. Sisterhood is so important to our congregation in a multitude of ways. Sometimes we forget the little things we do that are equally as valuable as our splashy events. For instance, Sisterhood supplies the candles, wine, juice and sometimes the challah for Friday night onegs; we provide camp scholarships, donate to many local charities, host several holiday dinners, help with BITY Conclave, and many other things too numerous to list here. In reflection, perhaps these are not little things at all. I hope you will continue to support Beth Israel Sisterhood so it can remain an integral part of our congregation. Yours truly, Charna Schlakman President, Beth Israel Sisterhood Sisterhood Lunch-Bunch Wednesday, May 15th 12:00 Noon Bon Ami in Maywood Mart Dutch-treat RSVP to Jan Docter by May 10th jan_4200@yahoo.com Meals on Wheels Monday & Friday of the first week of the month!
