I had not attended in the past few years, and I had forgotten how rewarding, inspirational, and educational the Biennial has always been. Music, worship, study, workshops, trading secrets with Jews around the country, learning from Jewish visionaries, and ultimately being surrounded by almost 5,000 Jews dedicated to congregational life lifted my spirit. Rabbi Rick Jacobs, President of the URJ, shared his message for the Reform Movement early in the Conference. Rabbi Jacobs did not introduce programs for congregations; he challenged us to think in new and innovative ways, and most of all, to actively include all Jews in our lives. He introduced a mindset, not an event. Rabbi Jacobs began by speaking about how the book of Genesis teaches the Jewish value of Audacious Hospitality. What is Audacious Hospitality? It is the way Abraham welcomed the strangers at Mamre the midrash says he was in the middle of having a conversation with God, and he interrupted God to jump up, greet his guests, bow before them, and run to serve their needs. Recovering from a recent medical procedure (self-circumcised at age 99), he still put his guests needs ahead of his own. The word audacious may get a bad reputation, yet it is actually a great word. It can mean extremely bold, daring or original; without restriction to prior ideas; or highly inventive. Combine those concepts with the value of hospitality, and this is the way we should welcome people into our communities in a bold and inventive way. As Rabbi Jacobs describes in his Biennial Keynote Address, Audacious Hospitality isn t just a temporary act of kindness so that people don t feel left out; it s an ongoing invitation to be part of a community where we can cont d on page 5... God loves truthfulness above piety and learning Quote of the Month 1

4 Our New President... President s Message It s early December and I am called upon to write my first CHAI LIGHTS Article. Not even the President of Beth Israel Congregation yet, I look upon the next two years with a lot of excitement. I know that there will be a lot of hard work, but alongside a terrific board I know that we will face the challenges together well. Installation of the new board will be January 3, 2014 with music by the Shirim choir for the evening and a special large oneg after services. I hope to see ALL come fellowship and support and welcome all new board members. Our strategic planning committee has been hard at work, and will be hosting a conference in late January to inform everyone of the plans. I appreciate the opportunity to be the President of Beth Israel Congregation Our kids education is back on track and Traci is hard at work. After five years of dedication, Traci will be moving on to new frontiers this summer. We are going to miss her tremendously. Enjoy the educational and social opportunities still available before next summer. With the delightful music from the choir and ensemble, they are currently at the peak of their season. Remember to join us at services at 6:15pm on Friday nights as well as our 9 a.m. Saturday morning services, which have grown in attendance. Sisterhood is gearing up for the new year. Mark your calendars because the Bazaar is coming up. Please start getting donations for the silent auction. The brotherhood is becoming more active. The social activities have been fun and I know Mark Fijman has several more events in the works. Join Brotherhood for the social and volunteer activities. I would like to let our community know I appreciate the opportunity to be the President of Beth Israel Congregation. I look forward to working with all of you over the next two years to help Beth Israel grow and deal with the changes and transitions that will be necessary. Howard T Katz, BIC President 4
5 Rabbi s Message continued... Greetings from Greetings the North From The North American American Board... Board become all that God wants us to be - and a way to transform ourselves in the process. Audacious hospitality is a two-way street, where synagogue and stranger need each other. Hospitality is not just our chance to teach newcomers but, just as important, an opportunity for them to teach us. The Talmud teaches us that hospitality to guests is even greater than being in the presence of God. I believe that hospitality to guests brings us even closer to God. As we build sustained relationships with others, we bring God s presence into the world. My thoughts are grounded in the teachings of our ancient and medieval rabbinic commentators. They base their explanation on the idea that there is a more complete connection with the Divine image in a person, than with the Divine presence itself. Rav Yehuda reminds us that although it is possible, to a certain extent, to connect with the Divine Presence, this relationship is somewhat limited, for there is, after all, an unbridgeable distance between man and God. As God tells us: No human can see My face and live (Exodus 33:20). However, it is different regarding welcoming a human guest whom one honors and has fondness for. One can connect completely with the Image of God that is in this person. In other words, through connecting with a person s Divine aspect, one connects more closely with God. We can achieve this closeness through Audacious Hospitality. Warm Welcomes and Relationship Building was the theme at the 2013 Bienniel in San Diego. URJ President Rabbi Rick Jacobs recognizes that the current Jewish Community differs from twentieth century Judaism, and in his message to the Bienniel, he stressed the importance of practicing audacious hospitality. Here at Beth Israel, we ve practiced Southern Jewish Hospitality for years, but we must heed Rabbi Jacobs call to extend our welcome beyond our membership to all Jews in the community and provide people what they are looking for, not simply open our doors and assume people will find what they want in our traditional model. Rather than programs, we must offer experiences for our members; Beth Israel can and should be a place to gather spiritually, socially, and communally. The bottom line for all future synagogue activity is building relationships take the time to chat with people you don t know at services and other BIC activities; both of your lives will be enriched. If you ve never attended a URJ Bienniel, you should start planning now for Orlando in November, There is truly something for everyone in a packed five days of activity. For the music lovers, there is a constant stream of performers throughout the week; for those interested in learning, there are speakers and panels on a wide variety of topics from social justice to 5

11 Greetings Continued Israel to food justice to religious school/preschool to small congregational challenges, and so much more. Celebrating Shabbat with nearly 5000 Reform Jews from all over the world is an amazing experience. The plenaries were all magnificent, stage managed to perfection by our own J.C. Cohen. Saturday night in San Diego, we celebrated 100 years of Women of Reform Judaism and 75 years of NFTY the creativity and power of women along with the exuberance of youth was breathtaking! The most fun to me, however was the people I got to visit with people connected with Jacobs camp I hadn t seen in years along with former BIC rabbis and people I knew in high school. The Jewish world is very small, and you never know who you ll run into. You can view speeches, services, programs, etc. at Recognizing the importance of instilling a love of Judaism early, the URJ is investing in a new Campaign for Youth Engagement, set to kick off this year. Among other initiatives will be the extension of NFTY down to middle school teens and efforts to bring camp-style programming to our youth on a year round basis. The URJ is also reorganizing its regional structure, dividing large regions into areas that can convene with other congregations in geographic proximity. Our area includes Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, W. Tennessee, and the Florida Panhandle. There will be a gathering open to all in our area next fall; I hope to have a large participation from BIC. I am pleased and honored to represent BIC on the North American Board. If you have questions or concerns about what the URJ is doing, please contact me, and I ll find the answer if I don t know it already.
