September Hakol The deadline for submission of articles, pics, tributes, announcements, etc. is Monday August 15. any submissions to Rachel@havurahshalom.org From Our Library My Promised Land: The Triumph and Tragedy of Israel by Ari Shavit (Spiegel & Grau, 2013) Another book about Israel? What does this one have to offer? Here s what the author himself has to say: While Israel remains innova ve, seduc ve, and energe c, it has become a na on in doubt... This book is the personal odyssey of one Israeli who is bewildered by the historic drama engulfing his homeland... What was achieved here and what went wrong, and where are we heading? That Israeli is journalist and commentator Avi Shavit. He serves up solid nonfic on with a narra ve flavor that draws you into the story star ng with his Bri sh great grandfather, who arrived in Jaffa in 1897 to fulfill Zionist dreams, and con nues to nearly the present day. Shavit is opinionated so what else is new? He shares his version of history with you, as if he were si ng next to you, speaking in the present tense. He makes you think. Shavit s philosophy of life might not exactly track yours, but his explora on of Israeli history and culture cap vates and enlightens. Thanks to Marc Becker, who has revitalized our book discussion group, we ll be exploring My Promised Land in September. Come join us. Ruth Tenzer Feldman 3 HAKOL July/Aug 2016

6 Tikkun Olam Portland Homeless Family Solu ons Goose Hollow Shelter Tikkun Olam Direct Service Project News Meet July, a single mother of two wonderful children: Joaquin, age 12, and April, age 10. In 2014, July lost her job at Goodwill and her landlord was increasing her family's rent from $750 to $1,000 a month. As a result, July lost her housing and she and her kids became homeless, sleeping in their car for fi een months. July's family came to PHFS in the fall of July worked with a housing specialist to create an ac on plan. July reflects back on her me with PHFS: "PHFS was a family atmosphere. The staff made sure people were produc ve, accomplishing goals, and working as a team. Ge ng to know the volunteers was awesome. I loved the life lab classes. I learned budge ng skills, got resume assistance, took yoga, and was able to prepare for the future so something like this doesn't happen again. Shelter even got me ea ng healthier food at home and making healthy dinners for the kids. My children and I made good, life me friends. We have good memories from PHFS." July and the kids moved back into a home in March of 2016, with PHFS helping cover the cost of the security deposit and first two months of rent. July is working full me again, and April and Joaquin are doing well in school. Right: July and PHFS Program Director Kurt ge ng furniture at Community Warehouse for July's new apartment. Tikkun Olam welcomes Mitchell Plitnick Let s take a deep breath on BDS Mitchell Plitnick is the vice president of the Founda on for Middle East Peace. Previously, he was Director of the US Office of B Tselem: The Israeli Informa on Center for Human Rights in the Occupied Territories & Director of Educa on and Policy for Jewish Voice for Peace. His wri ng has appeared in Ha aretz, the New Republic, the Jordan Times, Middle East Report, the San Francisco Chronicle, and many other outlets. He has spoken across the country on Middle East poli cs, and regularly offers commentary through a wide range of radio and television outlets including PBS News Hour, the O Reilly Factor and CNBC Asia. Thursday, July 21, 7:00 to 8:30 pm Havurah Shalom Sponsored by J Street & Havurah From Brandi Tuck, Execu ve Director of PHFS: Have you heard in the news or no ced in your own neighborhood that there are more people sleeping outside these days? On any night of the year, there are over 800 homeless families with children living on the streets, in cars, and on couches in living rooms. Every year, PHFS helps over 200 families with children on their journey from homelessness to housing. It takes the support of our en re community to help make housing a reality for homeless families with children. For $1,500 we can provide a new home and the life skills needed to keep that housing long term. Jay Moskovitz and Gloria Halper met July and her two children last year when Havurah started its "adopt a night" project at Goose Hollow. April, her brother Joaquin and other children talked about their school the Community Transi on School (CTS), a private school for homeless children. Monday Friday school buses pick up and drop off children all over town. Jay and Gloria were so impressed with children like April that they wanted to volunteer at CTS and were delighted to learn that the SMART program (Start Making a Reader Today) was there, in need of more volunteers. From January May they read once a week for an hour with Kindergarten and First grade students, and will return next year (Oct May). More volunteer readers are needed! The above ar cle comes from PHFS Execu ve Director, Brandi Tuck. She lists $1500 as a figure that supports PHFS in their work to get families back into housing, along with teaching them some new life skills to help them keep stable housing. This $1500 figure is the cost to PHFS for total services for an average family staying an average amount of me (from several weeks to several months depending on a family's specific situa on and needs). Havurah began this Tikkun Olam project as a way to engage us in direct service. At our one year mark, seeing not only the work that the shelter does, and the opportuni es it provides for Havurah to do the work of Tikkun Olam (Bat Mitzvah Tzedakah projects as an example), the Tikkun Olam Commi ee began to use some of the commi ee funds (coming from tributes) to support PHFS. Thank you for your con nued me, energy, caring and financial support. Fi y Havurah families are signed up to volunteer at Goose Hollow. To join this group consider a ending an orienta on. PHFS orienta ons for Goose Hollow: July 11 & 27 & Aug 24, 5 6 pm at the shelter, 1838 SW Jefferson, parking behind the church.
