3 Rabbi s Message: Celebrating Good News By: Rabbi Van Lanckton - vlanckton@verizon.net My very dear friends, We have good news to celebrate. Donec interdum First of all, on May 28 our friend and this Bulletin s Editor, Theresa Levine, completed her journey to conversion to Judaism. I was privileged to serve on the Beit Din, the three-rabbi court, that met with her at Mayyim Hayyim in Newton and supervised the final steps in her achieving her dream of becoming a Jew. She will be known by her Hebrew name, Yael bat Raphael ben Leah. It has been a true privilege to study with her over this past year and watch her grow in Jewish knowledge. I am particularly impressed that her next move will be to make Pellentesque: aliyah: she is moving to Haifa this summer. When you see her, please join me in congratulating her. It has also been a joy to watch as the largest graduating class of the Rabbinical School of Hebrew College, fourteen students, achieve ordination after their intensive study of five or six years. This spring we celebrated the Tenth Anniversary of the Rabbinical School with a gala dinner at which we were privileged to watch a video that brilliantly displays why the school where I was ordained is such a treasure. Please watch it by pasting the following link into your browser: Finally, on the world scene I was heartened by the visit to Israel of Pope Francis last month. His decision to lay a wreath at the tomb of Theodor Herzl demonstrated his sincerity in wanting the world to know that the Vatican not only recognizes Israel but also understands it is the homeland of the Jewish people, just as Herzl envisioned. I am aware of the criticism that he corrected Prime Minister Netanyahu in a conversation about the language spoken by Jesus, whether Hebrew or Aramaic or both. But the exchange was playful and friendly, not hostile as some have depicted it. The Pope also visited Yad Vashem and engaged in what appeared to be supportive conversations with Israeli leaders. This summer we will celebrate one joyful holiday and observe two solemn days of remembrance. The first is Shavuot, from the evening of June 3 until the evening of June 5, marking the encounter at Sinai and the gift of the Torah to the Israelite people and, through us, to the Consectetuer: world. The two other dates of note are the Fast of Tammuz on July 15 and Tisha B Av, from the evening of August 4 to the evening of August 5. The former commemorates two events: the breaking of the law tablets by Moses when he descended from Sinai and found the Israelites worshiping the Golden Calf; and the breach of the walls of Jerusalem before the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 C.E. Tisha B Av, the ninth day of the month of Av, is a day of mourning for numerous tragic events in Jewish history. To close on a more hopeful note: it is one of the elements of Jewish genius that we limit our days of mourning to just a very few, and they are far outweighed by all the days on which we celebrate, both on religious holidays and just on any day when there is reason to be grateful for life. I wish us all a warm and peaceful summer. 3

5 By: Peter Kurzberg From Your President From your President Shalom, I hope everyone is well as spring has arrived and we have almost completed another year. On Sunday, May 18 we held our congregational meeting in which officers and directors were elected for the year. Installation by Rabbi Lanckton will take place on Saturday, June 21. All are invited for this special Shabbat service and Kiddush. You can find the listing of new board members in this bulletin. I would like to express sincere appreciation to those individuals who served the temple this past year as well as the committee chairs who have played an integral part in so many of the activities and events held. Thanks go to the following board members: Barry belt, Marylou Fishman, Janice Fine, Meryl Smith, Paula Goldman, Sandie Baler-Segal, Cheryl Berman, Solomon Borocov, Arline Goodman, Florence Koffman, Jack Phillips, Jo Salloway, Laney Silva, Steve Karll, Judy Karll, Gail Lerner, Audrey Mallock, Liz Bloom and Paul Rubin. Thanks also to Richard Salloway for working on publicity and David Flaherty for all of the odds and ends he does for us every week. Joining the board as the men s club representative is Michael Caplan. Welcome, Michael. Thank you for your willingness to contribute to our temple. It is with a heavy heart that we have lost Jack Phillips as a member on our board and our temple. Jack s passing has been a great loss for us on so many fronts. His legacy will carry on for his leadership role in the men s club, Saturday Night at the movies, and for the warmth and affection he showed to all with whom he came in contact. Our heartfelt sympathies and condolences go out to Jack s wife, Elaine and family. This year was another active year for our temple. We continue to be fortunate to have so many of our congregants participating in various activities; whether it be Shabbat services, educational programs and social functions, helping with rummage, or visiting our new web-site. If you have not visited it recently, go to I think you will be pleasantly surprised. It has updates throughout the year. Thanks to Gail Lerner for continuing to spearhead this project and to Evelyn Schichner for hosting our web-site. Finally, I want to thank Theresa Levine for helping out with our bulletin these last few months. Theresa will be making Aliyah and leaving for Israel in August. We wish her the very best as she begins this new chapter in her life. We have enjoyed her participation and involvement with our temple and hope we will see her again when she visits us here or we visit her in Israel! (Continued on page 6 ) 5

6 From Your President (cont d) Now for my pitch, again, to become a little more involved with the temple. You can do so in many ways without a great deal of effort. I guarantee you will find it worthwhile and enjoyable. If you have not attended any or many functions at the temple this past year, consider participating more this coming year. Consider coming to temple a few more times during the year beyond the High Holy Days. Do you have a yahrzeit coming up? Sponsor a Kiddush and come to temple. We can always use some assistance in the kitchen on Saturday mornings for our Kiddush. Contact Paula Goldman at paulag@beld.net for more information. I look forward to serving as your president for another year. I want to thank Marylou Fishman for all of her assistance again this year. She continues to work as hard as past president as she did as president. Wishing you all the very best in the summer months ahead. Congratulations Officers and Directors!
