6 The complete word study dictionary : Old Testament : ḥānanח נ ן A verb meaning to be gracious toward, to favor, to have mercy on. In the wisdom literature, this verb is used primarily with human relations to denote gracious acts toward someone in need (Job 9:2; Prov. 9:7). Though the wicked may pretend to act graciously, they do not do so; neither should it be done so toward them (Ps. 37:2; Prov. 2:0; 26:25; Isa. 26:0). Outside of the wisdom literature, the agent of graciousness is most frequently God, including the often repeated cry, Have mercy on me! (Ex. 33:9; Num. 6:25; Ps. 26:; 27:7; 9:58). A mixture of divine and human agencies occurs when God, in judgment, sends nations that will show no mercy to punish other nations through warfare (Deut. 7:2; 28:50; Isa. 27:). ii
