TEVET-SHEVAT-ADAR 5774 JANUARY - FEBRUARY 2014 A TROPHY TO OUR 2014 DINNER DANCE HONOREE THE CLIFTON JEWISH CENTER IN HONOR OF ITS 70TH ANNIVERSARY SUNDAY JUNE 22, 2014 at 2:30pm CLIFTON JEWISH CENTER Early History of the CJC A social club called "Planets" started by young Jewish men in Clifton during their high school years in the 1920's was the first Jewish organization in the City of Clifton. In 1942 when many group members reached maturity, the years of friendship and camaraderie paid off. Meeting at the Okonowsky home a decision was made to form a Jewish congregation in the City of Clifton. Administrative space was rented at Thorburn's Hall on Clifton Avenue. A Hebrew School was started with classes meeting in the basement of Ethel Goldberg's home on Sylvan Avenue. In the spring of 1943, at a meeting held at the Daughters of Miriam, the Clifton Jewish Council was organized. The first President, Maurice Karp served with seven trustees. Throughout the remainder of 1943 and into 1944 plans continued. Through the courtesy of the Fabian Theater chain, offices above the Clifton Theater were used at no charge for a three day a week Hebrew School. In 1944 under the Presidency of Abraham Feltman a Building Fund Campaign began. During the Presidency of Philip Rubin in 1945, Ruth Polhemus Goldberg, our only honorary member, donated the premises at 300 Clifton Avenue above the Grand Union for the use of the CJC. At this time, a Womens Council was organized. In 1946 while Joseph Stadtmauer, our 4th President, was in office, our first spiritual leader was hired. Rabbi Harold J. Ramirowsky taught three days and conducted services on the Sabbath and High Holidays above the Grand Union. He alternated living in the Goldberg and Rubin homes until he married. Finally after almost five years of planning a site for a permanent home was chosen in 1947 under the 5th President Jacob Averbach. On October 30, 1949, ground breaking ceremonies were carried out on the tract of land at Barkley and Delaware. The cornerstone was laid on June 4, Taken from the notes left by Dr. Harold Rosenberg and Dr.Robert Sussman

The Bulletin Page 3 RABBI S MESSAGE Funerals and unveilings are a part of the lifecycle events that a Rabbi leads during the course of his responsibilities. For me, the challenge is to make each service a unique one, because I believe that a generic service takes away from the importance and value of the departed to their loved ones and friends. Despite the fact that a Rabbi is compensated for his time preparing and providing the service, a funeral service is not something that I look forward to doing because there are no happy funerals. Every once in a long while, something happens at a funeral service or unveiling that makes it very special to me. Recently, I had the opportunity to do an unveiling for a woman where both she and her (living) husband were partisans fighting the Nazis in WWII. I felt most honored to provide that service and pay honor to such special heroic people. There is an expression in Hebrew that tells us Tov Shem Tov M'shemen Tov. It is better to have a good name than to possess lots of oil. Simply it means that a good name is worth more than money. A good name keeps your memory alive, your money you leave behind and that is the end of it. I didn't know Arnold Schiff, husband of our secretary Fran, very well, but I heard lots of good things about him while he was alive. What I saw at his funeral told me a lot more. There, after we covered the coffin, I announced that it was the traditional practice to cover the grave of the deceased with the labor of friends and family. Most often there is little response to this and it is left to the cemetery workers to fill in the vast majority of the grave. However, with Arnold, it was another story. A small cadre of people volunteered to fill the grave and in the past, it was usually Jewish people who took that honor for themselves. In Arnold's case two former co-workers of Arnold, in much better shape and younger than most of the other attendees, stepped forward, took two shovels and started to fill in the grave when it was their turn. And they shoveled and shoveled, becoming sweaty and tired. I offered to relieve them along with several members of Arnold's extended family and theni learned about Arnold. These two non-jewish people held Arnold in such respect, felt so close to him, so thankful to him for the kindness and goodness he had always shown to them that they told me that they will not relinquish their shovels and will complete the job. Arnold, they said, had done wonderful things mentoring, advising, assisting, guiding and that is what made them the successful members of the EPA team that they were. And, they further advised me that just about everyone who ever worked with Arnold felt the same way. It was their privilege to make sure that the tradition be fulfilled, that they felt honored to do it and that they wished to carry on to the very end. -And so they did.

The Bulletin Page 4 RABBI'S MESSAGE continued Arnold Schiff left a shem tov that will live in the hearts of his family and friends and co-workers, most likely for generations. The life that he led was al kidush hashem, the sanctification of G-d's name. Arnold's daily activities and deeds were so impressive to those about him that he represented to the non-jewish world the sanctification of G-d's name. Would that we could all in our lifetime accomplish the same thing, we would indeed be a k'hila kedosha, a holy congregation in both word and deed. Rabbi Bob PRESIDENTS MESSAGE Dear Congregants I want to take this opportunity to wish all of you a very happy and healthy This will be a very exciting year for the Clifton Jewish Center as we celebrate our 70th anniversary. Committees are already hard at work planning for our year long celebration. Jackie Schein has been busy finding photos, letters, and other documents that highlight our history and has been putting many items on display in the Wenger Lounge. Come take a look and you may see pictures of yourself and your friends taking part in Center activities that will bring back many fond memories. The exhibit changes every two weeks, so keep coming back to view a piece of our history. A major part of our celebration is the Ad Journal and Dinner Dance planned for Sunday June, 22, 2014 at the Center. This is our largest fundraiser of the year and we hope to involve more Center members than ever before. So, even if you haven't participated in the past, we look forward to support from the entire congregation and community in this important project. Please help us reach out to former members, alumni of Hebrew School, neighbors and merchants in the neighborhood. On Friday, December 13th we held our first Family Shabbat Service. Children and their parents joined in with regular Friday night attendees and participated in an enjoyable service and family oriented sermon by Rabbi Mark. More such services are planned so check the calendar and we hope to see you there.

The Bulletin Page 5 President continued. Our next Shabbat Dinner will be on Friday January 17th. Come warm up at the Center on a cold winter night with an early service, an enjoyable dinner and even better company. We will also have an Oneg Shabbat table set up that evening for anyone who attends services but chooses not to stay for dinner. If you have any ideas for programs, would like to work on a Dinner Dance committee, or want to help out in any way, please contact the office or me. We can use all the help we can get and appreciate any new ideas you may have. My family and I wish you a very happy year ahead and we look forward to a great year for the Clifton Jewish Center. 6 The Bulletin Page 6 TU B SHEVAT - NEW YEAR OF TREES Tu B Shevat, the new year for the Trees will be celebrated on Thursday January 16th. The word Tu, pronounced too is constructed from the Hebrew letters tet and vav. Tet is the ninth letter in the Hebrew alphabet; vav is the sixth. Nine + Six = Fifteen. B Shevat means in the month of Shevat. The custom on Tu B Shevat is to eat fruits from the seven species for which the Land of Israel is praised:...a land of wheat and barley and (grape) vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and (date) honey (Deut. 8:8). The proper blessing before eating the fruit is: Baruch Atah Ado-nai Elohai-nu Melech HaOlam boray pri ha-aitz. Blessed are you God, King of the Universe, Who creates the fruit of the tree. On Tu B Shevat, it is also customary to eat a new fruit (a seasonal fruit that you have not yet tasted this season), and to say the following blessing: Baruch Atah Ado-nai, Elohai-nu Melech HaOlam, sheh-he-che-yanu vi-kee-yimanu vi-hee-gee-yanu laz-man ha-zeh. Blessed are You God, King of the Universe, Who has kept us alive, sustained us, and brought us to this season. SISTERHOOD Shalom from Sisterhood! By the time you read this article, the Clifton Jewish Center/Sisterhood Chanukah Party will have taken place. The deli heroes were a great hit and the latkes were the best ever! Thanks to Martine and Karen for their baking skills in making the delicious brownies. Those of you who weren t there missed a fun-filled afternoon. The Magic Show was terrific. If you have not already done so, please send in your Sisterhood membership dues to the Center. Dues are $25.00 per person and $30.00 per couple. As always, don t forget Sisterhood for your Golden Book needs. Please contact Barbara Klausner at We are looking forward to having a special event in the Spring. I wish all of you and your families, a happy, healthy and prosperous 2014 L Hitraot, Fran Schiff Sisterhood President Dear Members Winter is upon us and the snowbirds have started to depart for warmer locations. This leaves a void in our morning MINYAN and FRIDAY NIGHT SERVICES If you can attend the MINYAN on Mon. or Thurs. at 8:00am or Sun. at 8:30am and Friday evening at 7:30pm, please make every effort to do so. Help us maintain these very important religious services. Your attendance will be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance and I look forward to seeing you there. Elinor Alboum

The Bulletin Page 7 TEMPLE TALES SALUTES IRIS & MAL GANG Mal and Iris Gang joined the Clifton Jewish Center over 30 years ago, not long after moving to Clifton from Philadelphia. Over the course of that time they have each contributed to the growth of the CJC, both individually and as a team. Mal served on the Ways and Means Committee, is the House Chairman, and wasvice President of the Board for many years before assuming the role of President. He currently serves as the Treasurer. During his tenure on the Board, Mal has helped to ensure that the Center was looking its best during the High Holidays, working diligently to see that needed repairs and improvements were made during times of financial strain for the Center. He has used his interest and skill at woodworking to both set up and participate in a recent craft fair at the Center, as well as crafting a formidable gavel to be used at Board Meetings during his presidency. In 2012, Mal, who volunteers his time as a caring clown to entertain in hospitals, nursing homes and at charitable events, gathered his clown friends to entertain at the annual Chanukah Party. Iris has served in both the Sisterhood and as a Board member. She also has, for the last several years, participated in High Holiday services by reading the story of Jonah and his adventures in the land of Niniveh. She regularly participates in the CJC 's Book Club and can usually be found helping out behind the scenes at the CJC's annual Chanukah party as part of a team making sandwiches and latkes for the party. Iris's interest in making jewelry has led her to help set up and participate in a recent craft fair at the Center.

The Bulletin Page 8 TEMPLE TALES continued One of the reasons my parents joined the CJC all those years ago was to ensure that my sister and I were given instruction at the Hebrew School and were prepared for our Bar and Bat Mitzvah. As students of the Hebrew School, my sister and I were part of a small, but tight-knit community of the CJC families. Sadly, many of those families are no longer here at CJC, as children have moved away and parents and grandparents have passed on. Through it all, Mal and Iris have remained, and they continue that sense of community, both by volunteering their time at the Center as well as involving Center members (past and present) in their outside volunteer work with the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. My parents and a group of friends from the congregation and from outside the Center spend all year fundraising, be it garage sales, gift wrapping at Barnes and Noble, sitting outside Stop & Shop with a collection jar, meeting regularly to plan the Light the Night Walk; approaching vendors to donate time, food, products and money to the event; transporting food and supplies to the event; or working at the walk itself in various capacities to help raise money for the cause. One of the highlights of the day is always dinner at the Tick Tock Diner after the event when many of us meet to discuss the event. Mal is always still dressed as a clown. A few years ago, Mal and Iris were honorees at the Annual Dinner Dance. While my parents were thrilled to be so honored, their involvement with the Center is not motivated by thanks or accolades. My parents truly love the CJC. Their desire to put so much hard work into the Center, particularly at times when finances made running the place seem like an uphill battle, is indicative of what the Center means to them. When they came here their children were small. Now their children are adults and Mal and Iris have become grandparents for the second time. The Center has been a constant in their lives the entire time. Mitchell Gang ISRAEL BONDS It is always a good time to consider Israel Bonds for your savings. 14 The Bulletin Page 14 SINGLES GROUP The North Jersey Jewish Singles Group organized by Martine Jaffe and sponsored by the Clifton Jewish Center continues to be popular for singles in their 40 s-70 s. We had a large turnout for the Annual CJC/Sisterhood Party on Sunday November 24th which was enjoyed by all. Following the Magic Show, we participated in a Chanukah grab bag and circle discussion. Members of our group have enjoyed coming to Shabbat services and participating in the Shabbat Discussion Group. On Sunday December 22nd we had a wonderful Brunch followed by a Discussion led by Bruce Lichtenberg about Dating and Relationships. We are looking forward to "Bagels and Conversation" on Sunday, January 26th when we will feature line dancing instructions and another meeting on Sunday, February 23rd. For more information. please call Martine at A Gentle Reminder. No food can be brought into the shul unless it is in a sealed package from an established Kosher store or is labeled with an acceptable Kosher symbol. Thank you for your attention to this matter. To the ancient Israelites the earth itself was alive. The environmental laws in the Torah are based on this wisdom. Three thousand years ago Jews did not have words for the environment and ecology. What they had was the belief that a good life depended on preserving the land and the trees. This was a central theme in Judaism which we express when we celebrate Tu B Shevat. PLANNED GIVING Planned giving is an essential part of income tax, estate and financial planning. Please consider the Clifton Jewish Center as a beneficiary. PLEASE LET OUR RABBI KNOW If you know that a member of our congregation is in the hospital or at home with a serious illness, please call the Center to let Rabbi Mark know. The only way we know that you or a family member is in the hospital is if we are informed. The hospital or nursing home does not notify the Center. Thank you for helping us keep in touch.
