1 TEVET-SHEVAT-ADAR 5778 JANUARY - FEBRUARY 2018 MAZEL TOV TO OUR 2018 DINNER DANCE HONOREE THE CLIFTON JEWISH CENTER IN HONOR OF ITS 75TH ANNIVERSARY L DOR V DOR SUNDAY, JUNE 24, :30pm at The Richfield Regency Early History of the CJC A social club called "Planets" started by young Jewish men in Clifton during their high school years in the 1920's was the first Jewish organization in the City of Clifton. In 1942 when many group members reached maturity, the years of friendship and camaraderie paid off. Meeting at the Okonowsky home a decision was made to form a Jewish congregation in the City of Clifton. Administrative space was rented at Thorburn's Hall on Clifton Avenue. A Hebrew School was started with classes meeting in the basement of Ethel Goldberg's home on Sylvan Avenue. In the spring of 1943, at a meeting held at the Daughters of Miriam, the Clifton Jewish Council was organized. The first President, Maurice Karp, served with seven trustees. Throughout the remainder of 1943 and into 1944 plans continued. Through the courtesy of the Fabian Theater chain, offices above the Clifton Theater were used at no charge for a three day a week Hebrew School. In 1944 under the Presidency of Abraham Feltman a Building Fund Campaign began. During the Presidency of Philip Rubin in 1945, Ruth Polhemus Goldberg, our only honorary member, donated the premises at 300 Clifton Avenue above the Grand Union for the use of the CJC. At this time, a Women s Council was organized. In 1946 while Joseph Stadtmauer, our 4th President, was in office, our first spiritual leader was hired. Rabbi Harold J. Ramirowsky taught three days and conducted services on the Sabbath and High Holidays above the Grand Union. He alternated living in the Goldberg and Rubin homes until he married. Finally after almost five years of planning, a site for a permanent home was chosen in 1947 under the 5th President Jacob Averbach. On October 30, 1949, ground breaking ceremonies were carried out on the tract of land at Barkley and Delaware. The cornerstone was laid on June 4, Taken from the notes left by Dr. Harold Rosenberg and Dr.Robert Sussman

3 The Bulletin Page 3 RABBI S MESSAGE Two Missions To Israel What a Story To Tell As I returned from my most recent trip to Israel I could not put my finger on which of my many trips has been the best. The most recent one certainly is a contender. With the exception of just a few, most of my trips have been working trips, as has been this most recent tour entitled The Ultimate Mossad Mission. Concentrating primarily on the IDF and Mossad, we visited the Kirya (Israel s Pentagon), Mossad Headquarters, and a number of other places not normally seen by visitors, even important ones. Hosted by Shurat Hadin, we also received a great deal of information of its work, which is to deprive the PA and other terrorist sponsors (including Iran) of its financial resources. It has mastered the art of suing the various terrorist entities and using their own published information against them to win large settlements, including the transfer of a building in Midtown Manhattan formerly owned by the government of Iran and using the proceeds to help the victims and families of victims. Just how they do their work and how they succeed is something truly incredible to listen to. We were treated to lectures by their legal staff and directors and I can assure you that everyone was attentive and not a disruptive sound could be heard during their lectures. The mission was incredibly powerful but truly exhausting. Our schedule began between 5:30 and 6:00AM each day and ending most often around 9:00-10:30PM. Every moment was utilized including travel time between visits with lectures by Shurat Hadin attorneys, Israeli generals, former Mossad agents and directors. Following the trip, Eric (my son) and I went on our own Mission to the Druze community in Israel, to present the families of the officers slain on the Temple Mount with the additional funds we had collected after our original presentation on September 26th in our Sanctuary. Our experience there was successful beyond our wildest dreams. It is my intention to schedule a presentation of 2-3 hours after Sunday morning services, on a date to be announced. There are few pictures of the Mossad Mission because no cameras were allowed. Simply pulling out a cell phone was enough to get it confiscated. No exceptions. Below are some photos of our Druze Mission. Note that many homes of the Druze fly the Israeli Flag and the Druze flag, and are proud to do so. After meeting with the Druze, I can honestly say that they are THE MOST Patriotic Israeli citizens - Bar NONE. I look forward to letting you all share in what we learned on both missions. Rabbi Bob
4 The Bulletin Page 4 Dear Friends, PRESIDENTS MESSAGE I hope that you had a very happy Chanukah and are looking forward to a happy and healthy This is the time of year that people make New Year s resolutions. I would hope that some of you consider making a resolution to participate in and enjoy the many activities taking place at the Clifton Jewish Center. I thought I would take a few lines to tell you what you missed in December. Besides are regular services we had a very successful Chanukah party attended by over 130 adults and children. They enjoyed the deli sandwiches, latkes and desserts prepared by our members. We had fun with the tricky tray and enjoyed cotton candy and popcorn made on the spot by Noah Szeimberg, our very active young member. On December 13th, the members, both children and adults went to Clifton City Hall to light the menorah and celebrate Chanukah with songs and desserts. Mayor Anzaldi and several council members joined in our celebration and helped sing the dreidel song. Our Friday night December 15th Shabbat Dinner was enjoyable and delicious. Check out the Bulletin and the calendar to see what is coming up in January and February. We are working on some new ideas and are planning some surprises for the upcoming Sisterhood Brunch. Thanks to Aaron Toledano, who will tempt us with some of his wonderful recipes at a lunch in late February. I hope to see you in the coming months. On a more serious note, we need your help at our morning minyan. Some of our regular attendees have moved out of the area, are wintering in Florida, or unable to come for other reasons. I started attending the Thursday morning minyan when I retired and I know that a few more of you are also retired. It would be a great help if you could attend Monday, Thursday or Sunday morning so that we always have a minyan for people saying Kaddish. After services we always have coffee and snacks and sit around chatting and relaxing before starting our day. Your attendance would be greatly appreciated. SAVE THE DATE. Sunday, June 24, 2018 is the date for the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Clifton Jewish Center. Our Dinner Dance this year will be held at the Richfield Regency in Verona and I am pleased that Iris and Mal Gang are chairing it. Stay tuned for more details. We have many activities planned for the upcoming months and I do hope that one of your resolutions this year will be to become an active member of the Clifton Jewish Center. Elinor Alboum, President

6 The Bulletin Page 6 TU B SHEVAT - NEW YEAR OF TREES Tu B Shevat, the new year for the Trees, will be celebrated on Wednesday January 31st. The word Tu, pronounced too is constructed from the Hebrew letters tet and vav. Tet is the ninth letter in the Hebrew alphabet; vav is the sixth. Nine + Six = Fifteen. B Shevat means in the month of Shevat. The custom on Tu B Shevat is to eat fruits from the seven species for which the Land of Israel is praised:...a land of wheat and barley and grape vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive trees and date honey (Deut. 8:8). The proper blessing before eating the fruit is: Baruch Atah Ado-nai Elohai-nu Melech Haolam boray pri ha-aitz. Blessed are you G-d, King of the Universe, Who creates the fruit of the tree. On Tu B Shevat, it is also customary to eat a new fruit (a seasonal fruit that you have not yet tasted this season), and to say the following blessing: Baruch Atah Ado-nai, Elohai-nu Melech HaOlam, sheh-he-che-yanu vi-kee-yimanu vi-hee-gee-yanu laz-man ha-zeh. Blessed are You G-d, King of the Universe, Who has kept us alive, sustained us, and brought us to this season. ISRAEL BONDS The figure to date from the Annual CJC Israel Bond Drive is a grand total of $90,200 from 34 purchases. We are very proud to have raised this substantial amount. It is always a good time to consider Israel Bonds for your savings. Israel Bonds have never defaulted on payment of principal or interest since the first bonds were issued in We thank all of the participants in this worthwhile endeavor. To purchase a bond, please call Bill Frisch, Chairperson at WE NEED YOUR ASSISTANCE Services begin at 8:00am Monday and Thursday and at 8:30am on Sunday and Shabbat Services begin at 9:00AM. It is imperative that you attend on time. The first saying of the Mourners Kaddish occurs about ten minutes after the beginning of the service. Without a minyan (10 people) we are unable to say Kaddish and this must be skipped until our numbers increase during services. We urge you to be on time so that our mourners can be accommodated. Thank you. MAZEL TOV TO JUDY AND JOEL WOROB ON BEING THE WINNER OF OUR CHANUKAH RAFFLE DRAWING THANK YOU TO ALL MY WONDERFUL FRIENDS FOR THEIR GOOD WISHES AND KINDNESS DURING MY RECENT ILLNESS. 14 The Bulletin Page 14 SINGLES GROUP The North Jersey Jewish Singles Group organized by Martine Jaffe and sponsored by the Clifton Jewish Center continues to be popular for singles in their 50 s-60 s+, coming from the entire metropolitan area. On October 29th we had a successful brunch and Sing-A-Long with Marty Yospe. Some of our members joined the Lox Box Brunch and over 50 of our members joined the CJC/Sisterhood Chanukah party and a good time was had by all. On January 7th at 12 Noon, we are planning an Open Mike Comedy Brunch MC d by Steve Goldberg and on Sunday, February 25th the North Jersey Jewish Singles are invited to Aaron Toledano s Tasting lunch and movie. For more information, please call Martine at To the ancient Israelites the earth itself was alive. The environmental laws in the Torah are based on this wisdom. Three thousand years ago Jews did not have words for the environment and ecology. What they had was the belief that a good life depended on preserving the land and the trees. This was a central theme in Judaism which we express when we celebrate Tu B Shevat. COMING IN EARLY FEBRUARY This year, the CJC is once offering again its successful way to wish your friends and family a HAG PURIM. As a fundraiser, we will be offering a beautiful personalized Purim greeting to your friends and relatives. Sending these greetings will support the CJC and is a lovely way to acknowledge friendship. You will be receiving your form from last year in late January and if you want to, you can add or delete recipients. Please send your completed form back to the Center by Monday, February 12th. WELCOME TO THE CJC B0OK CLUB On Sunday, February 4th at 10:30am, the CJC Book club will meet in the upstairs Werksman Library to review the book, Playing with Fire by Tess Gerritsen, led by our own, Candace Simon. Books are available at the Allwood library after December 27th.
