Those living in Eastern Europe found themselves victimized and subjugated by warring nations due to the fact that their towns and villages were located in areas of major conflict. Furthermore, for the first time in the modern era, Jews enlisted in large numbers in the armies of the major combatants, and as a result, suffered the casualties of the most brutal conflict the world had ever experienced up until that time. As a result of the war s outcome, the Jews became the scapegoat for the animosity of Germany and the countries of Eastern Europe. A strong case can be made that the roots of both the Holocaust and the creation of the modern State of Israel were shaped by the outcome of the First World War. I will begin the first of a three part series of adult education classes on Sunday, November 19 th, entitled: The Jews and the First World War: Unleashing the Mad Dogs of War. We will examine the events leading up to the outbreak of hostilities, the role of the Jews in European society at the beginning of the 20th century, their participation in the conflict and the nature of Jewish life throughout Europe just prior to the beginning of hostilities. I hope you will join me as we delve into this crucial period of Jewish history. Sincerely, Serving the greater Jewish community for over 100 years Dr. Kenneth Stuart Blatt Rabbi/Cantor Congregation Shaara Tfille I f you know of a congregant who would like a home or hospital visit, please contact Carole in the office. The process of taharah or cleansing of the body, is performed by women on a deceased woman and by men on a deceased man. Following the cleansing process, the body is clothed in a white linen shroud called tachrichim and placed in the casket for burial. That concludes the task of the Chevra Kadisha. The Chevra Kadisha is looking to add a few new members to help carry out this ages-old Jewish tradition. Please contact the synagogue office if you are willing to participate in a training session. Know that the members of the Chevra Kadisha are carrying out one of the most sacred duties of Judaism. Thank you. While most Jews are knowledgeable regarding the devastating consequences of World War II, the ramifications of the so-called, Great War are more obscure. In our first session on Sunday, November 19 th, we will focus on the events leading up to the outbreak of hostilities. To understand the Holocaust and the birth of the modern State of Israel, it is necessary to understand what happened to the Jews during WW I. Join us for: Part One: Unleashing the Mad Dogs of War. This program will begin immediately following the synagogue breakfast.

Call Carole in the office with any additions or corrections. We Look Good. Now We Need To Sound Good! an Update Based on comments that I received from several congregants who attended the High Holy Day services, the need for a new sound system is imperative. We are jeopardizing our effectiveness to communicate because those who are attending our services, lectures, adult education classes, cultural programs and entertainment programs are having difficulty hearing. As I discussed in a previous message to the congregation, we want to improve the experience of being a congregant or guest by installing a new sound system. The present sound system is twenty-five years old and no longer functions adequately. At our August Board of Directors meeting, a decision was made to go ahead with a replacement of our current sound system. During the month of September, I met with five different installation company representatives to evaluate what was needed to replace our sound system and get an estimate of what it would cost. To date, I have received three estimates, and they each approximated the cost of installing a new sound system in the sanctuary and the social hall at approximately twenty-thousand dollars ($20,000.00). While we have received a few donations to date, we are not even close to having the funds to undertake the cost of a replacement system. We hope that you will consider making a special donation earmarked for the Sound System Fund so that we can begin the installation as soon as possible. Thank you. Sincerely, Rabbi Kenneth S Blatt 5
