The two sages that I am referencing are Moses and the prophet, Micah. In the Book of Deuteronomy, the fifth and final Book of Moses, the greatest Hebrew prophet wrote the following: To love God, to fear him, to serve God, to walk in his ways. Many centuries later, the prophet, Micah, addressed the same issue and enunciated what it is that God wants us to do. He wrote the following:... it is just doing justice, love and kindness, and walking modestly with the lord, your God. Obviously, it is a different list of actions than the one Moses put forth. So the question arises: Was the prophet, Micah, in disagreement with Moses over what constitutes the actions of a good Jew? I think the answer is clearly yes, that there is disagreement on the basic question, which really should come as no surprise to anyone. Throughout our long history, Jews have exercised their free will to act and behave independently, as well as to express their individuality of ideas. There is no better example of this than the vast compendium of Jewish laws known as the Talmud, which is filled with varying and often opposing opinions by the greatest Jewish thinkers. Looking more closely at Micah s opinion, the foundation of his thinking was that the actions of a good Jew are based on justice, that is, fairness, kindness, which is closely related to compassion and empathy, and finally, humility. Each part of this three-pronged system reinforces the other two. Kindness without justice is hollow. Justice without kindness is hard and steely edged. Real decency requires the third element: humility, or an absence of arrogance. In effect, Micah provided us with a vision of tolerance that allows people of good will to freely express themselves and to treat each other with respect even if they disagree with each other. As you go through the High Holy Days, consider the actions that you subscribe to that will make you a better person in the year ahead. Shanah Tovah! Sincerely, Dr. Kenneth Stuart Blatt Rabbi/Cantor Congregation Shaara Tfille Serving the greater Jewish community for over 100 years
