It will be part of the and open to the Saratoga County community. The body of work that Richard Rodgers created is staggering. Although his last collaboration with lyricist Oscar Hammerstein opened on Broadway almost seventy years ago, his presence has never left us. Revivals of his stage productions, as well as highly acclaimed motion picture versions of his musicals have made the music of Richard Rodgers a permanent part of American culture. Although he wrote eleven musicals with Mr. Hammerstein, including nine stage productions, one movie musical and one television musical, what made this team the most successful in the history of the American theatre was the creation of five spectacular works: Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music. This remarkable string of theatrical classics was only part of the Richard Rodgers legacy. Prior to his work with Mr. Hammerstein, he collaborated with Lorenz Hart from 1919 until In the era of the Jazz Age, Rodgers and Hart created thirty-eight professional shows and films which competed for audiences with the productions of the Gershwin brothers, Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin and Cole Porter, among others. Their output of five-hundred songs includes timeless American standards such as Manhattan, Blue Moon, My Funny Valentine, Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered and The Lady Is a Tramp, just to name a few. It would not be an exaggeration to say that Richard Rodgers was the most successful composer of popular music for the theater in the twentieth century. At this summer's concert, I will be accompanied on the piano by Michael Clement, an incredible musician with whom I have performed over the past ten years. I look forward to sharing the glorious music of Richard Rodgers with our congregation and community on Sunday, July 15 th at 2:00 p.m. Sincerely, Dr. Kenneth Stuart Blatt Rabbi/Cantor Congregation Shaara Tfille Serving the greater community for over 100 years

9 E ve Ensler the playwright said, Any of us can use our lives, our statures and our resources to serve something beyond ourselves. For us, the Family of Valor tribute was beyond our expectations! We were exceedingly humbled to hear so many wonderful sentiments that saturated our souls with love and permeated our hearts with gratitude. It was overwhelming yet ecstatic that so many of our family, friends and fellow congregants were there to celebrate the simcha with us as well as the many others who wrote beautiful greetings in the journal. Each and every day, we all need to cherish our blessings, treasure our family, appreciate our friendships, savor our memories and be generous with our compliments, love and talents. Our strong sense of heritage, faith and tradition emphasizes the importance of family, charity, education and community. We want to express our immense thanks again for everyone who helped to make the day so incredible. Most of all, we want to convey our boundless amount of appreciation to everyone who allows us to enjoy this glorious life we are privileged to live! We want to conclude with a quote from a true hero of ours Arthur Ashe: From what we get, we can make a living; from what we give, however, makes a life. 10 A Message from the Editor s most of you know, Joe A and I have recently moved to the Philadelphia area to be near our children and grandchildren. I have continued to do The Scroll, although due to moving demands and illness, I have only been able to produce an every-other-month newsletter. After many years, I am willing to continue this endeavor for a short while, but it is time for a local congregant to take over. If you are willing and able, or you know someone else who is, please call Carole in the office at and volunteer. I am willing to work with you and help get you started. A Memorial Plaques plaque on the memorial tablets on the wall in the Sanctuary is a meaningful way to memorialize the passing of a loved one and also support Congregation Shaara Tfille. For a donation of $500, a plaque with the English and Hebrew names and date of death will be mounted on one of the memorial tablets. These plaques can be a permanent remembrance of a family member, friend or loved one, whether or not the deceased was a member of the Congregation. Please contact Carole in the office at for details. Spotlight on Bingo Bonus Ball and Progressive Bingo are conducted weekly under the watchful eyes and due diligence of Al Kasin and Mike Fischer. These games provide over $7,500 to support Congregation Shaara Tfille s operating expenses, with Bingo players receiving over $22,000 in prizes. Bonus Ball : The first ball of the evening pulled at the start of each bingo session is designated the Bonus Ball for that week. Players pay $1 for a chance of winning the Bonus Ball pot by getting a good bingo on that number in any of four different Bonus Ball games. That winner is awarded 60% of the evening s proceeds plus all prize money carried over from the prior week. The winning prize often accumulates to hundreds of dollars. If there is no Bonus Ball winner, the 60% proceeds are added to the carry-over prize money for the following week. 40% of the dollars collected each week are used to support Congregation Shaara Tfille s operating expenses. Progressive Bingo : Players pay $1 for each Progressive Bingo card, which is a special coverall game the first (early bird) game of the evening. If a player fills the entire card and declares bingo on or before a designated number of balls announced each week, the winner receives 75% of that evening s proceeds plus all prize money carried over from the prior week. This prize often reaches $2,000 or more, and along with the Bonus Ball prize, helps encourages people in the community to come and try their luck. If there is no winner, the game continues until a good bingo is called, and the winner then receives the consolation prize 50% of the evening s proceeds with 25% of the proceeds added to the carry-over prize money for the following week. Each week the other 25% of the Progressive dollars are added to the synagogue money used to support the congregation s operating expenses. Al and Mike work very hard each week on these two games. Celebrate the Times of Your Life at Congregation Shaara Tfille Judaism is a belief system that celebrates life. As such, it is most appropriate to commemorate both religious and significant secular occasions in the synagogue to heighten the joyfulness of the event and imbue it with an element of the spiritual. During the past few years many of our members have shared the special moments in their lives with the congregation. I want to encourage all of you to continue to take advantage of this unique opportunity to celebrate baby namings, birthdays, anniversaries, renewal of wedding vows, aufrufs, bar and bat-mitvahs, engagement parties, school graduations and job promotions at the synagogue. Let us continue the time-honored tradition of sharing your nachas (pride and joy) with the community. 10

12 featuring This Musical Cabaret will celebrate the wonderful songs of Richard Rodgers perhaps the greatest Broadway Composer. Throughout an incomparable career that spanned over 50 years, he wrote the music for many of the most loved musicals ever to grace the Broadway stage. The program will feature his collaborations with Lorenz Hart and Oscar Hammerstein at at A thrilling, enlightening and redemptive documentary that examines the lesser known aspects of the extraordinary dancer, singer, impressionist and actor Sammy Davis, Jr. Star-Studded interviewees pay tribute to the charismatic, chameleon enternainer who blazed a trail across the shifting tides and flash points of 20th century America. Defying societal norms concerning interracial romance, religion and political affiliation, Davis courted controversy many times, but always with grace and honesty. This film finally restores the deserved respect that ha s elud ed the entertainment legend for so long. 12
