1 TEMPLE TIMES Lubbock, Texas Announcments Come celebrate Chanukah at Barnes and Noble on Sunday, Nov 18 from 3pm to 5pm. It will be a fun time for all and any money raised will benefit East Lubbock Neighborhood Promise. Also, the kids who attend this event will receive a book compliments of the Rabbi. Sisterhood Chanukah Celebration will be Dec. 1st; more details TBD. Dinner Nov 16th, 2018 at 7:00 pm Services at 6:15 pm RSVP Fela Shturman at shturman@sbcglobal.net by Wednesday Nov 14th, 2018 if you would like to attend! Men s Lunch The Men s lunch has been cancelled. If you would like to organize this event, please inform the president, Jonathan Marks. Dear CSI Family, We have a guest writer for this month s newsletter. Before I introduce him, I want to make sure you know: Jewish camp is not just for kids! There are camps for young adults, newly married couples, longtime married couples, families, and more. If you are interested in learning about other Jewish camp opportunities, please reach out! This past month, Ethan Lane-Miller, came to visit Lubbock to inspire CSI kids to participate in summer and year-round programs at URJ Greene Family Camp. Early bird registration for summer camp has already begun. I asked him to share some words about Jewish Camp in North America because I did not grow up in the United States. My experience with Jewish summer camp was in Brazil. I can tell you that I have great memories. The memories that stick out the most are somewhat random: I remember learning (and loving) birkat ha-mazon (the blessing after the meal), and I remember feeling like I spent the entire summer outdoors. I also spent my year in Jewish Day school. Despite growing up in a heavily Catholic country, I was always surrounded by Jewish community, at school and in the summer. This is probably one of the biggest differences between growing up Jewish in Latin America vs North America. In the United States, and certainly in Texas, our students often feel they are the only Jew in their community. That is a heavy burden: being the token Jew, being the one where everything you say or do becomes your peer s Jews do X because the one Jew I know does it. It s also lonely. Attending Jewish summer camp becomes a rare opportunity where almost everyone around you is Jewish and is not expecting you to defend your Judaism. Continued on page 4 Temple Times 1

4 Continued from page 1 At Jewish camps, you meet other people who come from families with similar stories as your own. It s an amazing and powerful experience. One that I think Ethan can do a better job of explaining. Thank you to Ethan, for sharing some thoughts on Jewish camp with us! Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving! 5 The pictures and videos from camp are easy to find: a camper jumping into the swimming pool on a hot summer afternoon, a camper climbing to the top of the alpine tower, or a camper with a huge smile framed by paint splatters from an art project. It s so clear that summer camp and other immersive Jewish experiences have a wonderful impact on our youth and so many youth professionals, myself included, have no shortage of anecdotes or qualitative data on the good that our programs do. But what is the real measurable impact of these programs? Why send kids to Jewish camp and other immersive experiences? In 2017 the Union for Reform Judaism commissioned a study with Rosov Consulting to try and measure the lasting impact of engaging Jewish youth. After reaching out to alumni of all ages and receiving 2,180 individual responses, the answer was clear: Reform Movement youth experiences (NFTY, URJ Camps, and congregational teen experiences) have a lasting impact into adulthood. The study showed that 90% of URJ youth program alumni were active Jewishly on their college campus through Hillel, a Jewish fraternity or sorority, volunteering their time, or other methods of engagement. Post-college, the results showed that 89% of alumni provided their children with a Reform Jewish education, 82% belong to a synagogue, temple, minyan, or havura, and 6 in 10 attend synagogue monthly or more. There is so much more to the study and I encourage you to read more at urjyouth.org/ impact Greene Family Camp s executive director, Loui Dobin, is fond of saying, Summer Camp is the of the year. It s a time and a place so unlike anything else that our kids get to experience. It s a moment where they are taking a break from the year and experiencing their Judaism in a way they simply can t anywhere else. Summer camp and other experiences build Reform Jewish identity and connection that can last a lifetime. To me, that is the biggest impact of camp: building our youth into engaged Jewish adults. The next time you see those pictures and videos from camp, yes, you ll see the swimming pool, and the alpine tower, and the art room, but you ll see something else too: a place where Judaism lives and thrives and where our youth build the connections and relationships that will last a lifetime.
