He gazed, and there was a bush all aflame, yet the bush was not consumed. 3 Moses said, I must turn aside to look at this marvelous sight; why doesn t the bush burn up? 4 When the LORD saw that he had turned aside to look, God called to him out of the bush: Moses! Moses! He answered, Here I am. 5 And He said, Do not come closer. Remove your sandals from your feet, for the place on which you stand is holy ground. Where was this Burning Bush? Those who have been to Israel (or the Sinai): Did your bus ever stop at the site of the Burning Bush? Do you remember seeing the plaque? No, there is none. This is not only because the exact location has been lost; other historical and quasi-historical events have claimed their places on the map with little or no 1

2 meanings. Some are on the surface, others more deeply hidden. We have the Temple in Jerusalem, to be sure: the place it once stood on Mount Moriah, and the retaining wall which remains today (known as the Western Wall). Aside from this, though, there is not much. There are many interesting historical places of note in Jerusalem and throughout Israel, but the sanctity of place does not have a high profile for most of us. Though some may feel moved to prayer at the graves of the righteous (and sometimes the not-sorighteous) or at ancient synagogues, most of us choose not to venerate the place. We don t do shrines, at least not well. My teacher, Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, taught that, instead of sacred place, we have excelled in sacred time. We prefer to find holiness in days and seasons. Shabbat and the holy days are our temples. Perhaps this is what the Almighty intended when he spoke to Moses at the bush: Take off your shoes now, Moses, for the place where you now stand is holy enough. You don t need to come close to a burning bush or anything else. Wherever you stand, there is my presence. Can You Solve the Mystery? Who painted these original works?
