Dalia Shabatian Volume 24 Principal Issue 5 October 27, Cheshvan, 5778 Rabbi Yamin Levy LIHA Rabbi THE VOICE OF OUR CHILDREN A WEEKLY PUBLICATION Please visit our website for the FULL newsletter in color! Message from Rabbi Yamin Levy LIHA, Rabbi Shalom My Dear Parents, Students and Friends, I wish you could come and experience the Tefilah at LIHA as I do every morning. The Tefilah program we initiated last year is showing dividends this year. This Shabbath we read about Avraham Avinu and his heroic rise as the father of the Jewish people. Humanity is indebted to our forefather for bringing the truth of one God, creator of the universe to the world. This truth, however, comes with a price. The Torah tells us Hashem tested Avraham Avinu no less than 10 times. Again and again life brought upon Avraham numerous, burdens, risky assignments, temptations and good reasons to give up and yet at each juncture Avraham Avinu demonstrated his love and faith in Hashem as well as his strong character and determination. I often wonder if this is the secret of Avraham Avinu's radiant life. The legacy he left his children is that life is a classroom. Every experience is a new pop-quiz whose purpose is to determine not what we know but what we are about. This is exactly what our Hakhamim meant when they taught: "there is no creature whom the Holy One Blessed be He does not test." We are all tested my dear friends, whether we know it or not we are always being tested. Life is full of little quizzes and big tests. As husbands and as wives we are tested. As children and as parents we are tested. Our dedication and integrity is tested in our professional roles on a regular basis. As a rabbi writing this message I am tested. Each of these tests measures our character and gives us a better understanding of who we are and what we stand for. As neighbors our kindness is tested. When one has been blessed our generosity is tested. When we have been hurt our forgiveness gets tested. When we hurt another our humility is tested. Setbacks test our courage and temptation tests our strength. Friendship tests our loyalty while failure tests our perseverance. And success - success tests our gratitude. No day is free of tests. In fact the way we spend our day is the supreme test of all. Looking at life as a test means a commitment on our part to do the best we can. Tests require preparation and thoughtfulness. Ralph W. Emerson wrote: "it is one of the illusions that the present hour is not the critical, decisive hour. Write it on your heart that everyday is the best day of the year. No man has earned anything rightly until he knows that every day is doomsday. Today is a king in disguise... let us not be deceived, let us unmask the king as he passes." Parashat Lecha Lecha Shabbat Candle Lighting time is at 5:37 p.m. Havdalah time is at 6:46 p.m.

Toddler- Morah Galit Take A Look At LIHA This week we continued learning the color red and the season of fall. We are working on a fall book. We made a collage of the color red. We had a great week this week! Shabbat Shalom Toddler- Morah Karen In honor of Parashat Lech Lecha, the toddlers learned all about different modes of traveling. Just like Avraham had to travel by foot and on donkeys/horses, we too have different ways of traveling from one place to another. From school buses to trains to cars to boats to airplanes, we covered it all. We also focused this week on the stars in the sky as Hashem told Avraham that his offspring will be as many as the stars in the sky! The toddlers did movement with Morah Natali and went inside the school bus too! In music class, our songs focused on fall and Noach. During Library time, we read books about Shabbat in honor of the Shabbat project. We also focused more on transportation. The children are having so much fun while learning at the same time! This weeks Shabbat Imma is Channah and Shabbat Abba is Eliyahu! Thanks for the treats! Shabbat Shalom! Nursery Pre K Hashem told Avraham to go and this week we learned all about how we go from place to place, transportation. We made a class list of all types of transportation and then sorted them by land, sea and air. We make a special Bracha when we go on a long trip so we made a special תפילת הדרך for you to hang in your car. The season of fall is upon us and we discussed the changing of the leaves from green to pretty fall colors. Ask your child what those colors are. We finger painted and tissue papered leaves and painted a tree for our new bulletin board. The Hebrew letter for the week.אבטיח אדום We colored.א was What a busy week we had! Our class finished Parshat Bereshit and the childen did a wonderful job. We are sure you will admire the beautiful artwork each time you walk through the hallway by Mrs. Shabatian s office. Later in the week, the children learned all about Parshat Noah. Noah was a good man who listened to Hashem. The class learned about the Teva Noah built and the Mabul Hashem created. Each child made their own Teva, decorated them with animals and on top added a colorful rainbow. In addition, the children made rainbow cookies (to be baked at home) and learned that rainbows are Hashem s promise to never flood the world again. Some of our books of the week were Noah, Noah s Ark, Hug, Good Night Moon and Shabbos 1,2,3 s. Our Shabbat Ima & Abba were Liel & Aviel.
Kindergarten English "How do people in a community cooperate?" We answered this question as we read, Miss Bindergarten goes on a field trip with kindergarten, an animal fantasy. Our amazing words were chaperone, park, bakery, fire station, library and post office. We talked about community helpers (social studies), classified and categorized and verbs which are action words. We worked on letters a and g. In science we discussed bats, the flying mammal and living vs nonliving things. Our second chapter of the math curriculum, comparing numbers to 5, is now completed. Shabbat Shalom and have a nice weekend! Kindergarten Hebrew We learned the letter " DALET ד this week and our words (דגל l(flag. Dege,(דג (fish. starting with that letter are; Dug and Delet (door..(דלת We constantly reviewing the letters and the vowels that we have learned so far. Our new project about "colors. צבעים " is going well. This week we learned the color Red and green ( וירק.(אדום We roll played the parasha of this week; LECH LECHA and colored the parasha book. We also talked about the SHABBAT PROJECT which is this Shabbat and we hope everyone tries, according to their ability to keep shabbat אמא and the mitzvot of it as much as they can! Shabbat Elior. this week were Elora & ואבא 1 st Grade English This week we practiced words that have a middle short u sound like run, sun, bun. Read the book Spookley the Square Pumpkin- discussing how we can each embrace our own and each other s uniqueness and differences. We created our own unique pumpkin and wrote a paragraph about how each pumpkin is special - using descriptive writing. We are continuing our second math unit on subtraction and learning tools that scientists use during investigating and continuing exploring our five senses. Social studies we are discussing family customs and ways we can help out our family at home. 1st Grade Hebrew This week vocabulary was school supplies. I'm changing the test day from Friday to Tuesday not to have two tests in one day. In script we moved to letters ו and.ז Please make sure to read every day with your child, otherwise they fall behind. We.לך לך learned the parasha of the week Shabbat Shalom!!
2 nd Grade English This week the second grade started chapter two in their math books. We are learning how to show a three digit number. In social studies we learned about the different communities urban, suburban, and rural. The students had a wonderful week. 2 nd Grade Hebrew We continued learning שבת vocabulary. We encountered new verbs in our new story and increased the list. We also began to work on our book L Havin VeLehashkil. This book will prepare us to study Houmash. We finished the week learning parashat Lech Lecha. 3 rd Grade English We finished up chapter 2 in math this week and took our test. Next week we will be starting our first of two multiplication chapters. It is vital that your children start to memorize their multiplication facts and strategies. Multiplication facts and strategies are essential learning tools for the rest of our units in third grade as well as all future grades. Additionally, at the beginning of December they will start to be quizzed weekly on their facts until fluency is achieved. 3 rd Grade Hebrew We had our first parasha test(portion of the week in the Torah) and the children did great in it. This week we are learning parashat Lech Lecha, and saw how Abraham had a full trust in hashem. He did not question hashem about the place he is sending him, he just listened. The children are reading from the Torah and can translate the Psukim (verses) that we are learning. We are also learning the verb makor which is the infinite form of a verb. Please remind your children to read every day. Every Friday there will be a spelling test and every Monday there will be a parasha test. Shabbat shalom
4 th Grade English This week the fourth grade finished chapter one in math. They are very excited to begin multiplication. In class we have also begun reading one of my favorite classics, Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, by Judy Blume. 4 th Grade Hebrew This week was such a blessing. We learned a lot and had fun also. The class did so well on the Sukkot Dinim that as a reward, we went to 16 Handles to eat ice cream. 5 th Grade English We are starting to wrap up Chapter 2 in Math and will be having our test on Wednesday, November 1, In writing we have started a new creative writing project where the children are inviting 4 famous people of their choosing over for a dinner party. The focus of this unit is to continue to build their writing skills in the areas of: dialogue, paragraph structure and creativity. 5 th Grade Hebrew We are moving along in Chummash Shemot and in Mikraa Sheli, as well as Navi and Parashat Hashavua. Shabbat shalom
