4 Jews To Know by Lee Jacobi The Father of the Quark Murray Gell-Mann was born into a Jewish family in New York City in His parents Arthur and Pauline (nee Reichstein) were from a town in the Austro- Hungarian Empire now in the Ukraine. As a boy, Gell-Mann exhibited an intense curiosity for nature and mathematics. He enrolled at Yale University at the age of only 15, and earned his BS in physics in He went on to earn a PhD in physics from MIT in He married J. Margaret Dow in The couple had 2 children of their own, and a step-child. Dr. Gell-Mann s work at the University of Chicago in the 1950s focused on cosmic ray particles that came to be called kaons and hyperons. In 1964 he hypothesized that the hyperon was composed of a smaller particle that he dubbed a quark. Dr. Gell-Mann was awarded a Nobel Prize in physics in 1969 for his contributions and discoveries concerning the classification of elementary particles and their interactions. In his long career he has been Professor of Theoretical Physics Emeritus at the California Institute of Technology, a Distinguished Fellow and co-founder of the Santa Fe Institute, a Professor of Physics at the University of New Mexico, and the Presidential Professor of Physics and Medicine at USC. Dr. Gell-Mann also helped found the World Resources Institute, which conducts policy studies on global environmental problems. In 1986 Dr. Gell-Mann led a group of 72 Nobel laureate scientists and 24 scientific organizations who filed a legal brief with the U.S. Supreme Court challenging the constitutionality of a Louisiana law requiring schools that teach evolution to also teach creation-science. The brief argued that the Louisiana law threatened scientific education by disparaging proven scientific facts to promote fundamentalist Christian beliefs. The brief stated: Teaching religious ideas mislabeled as science is detrimental to science education. It misleads our youth about the nature of scientific inquiry... and strips our citizens of the power to distinguish between the phenomena of nature and the supernatural articles of faith. The Supreme Court struck down the law in Written by Lee Jacobi. Credits: Jewdayo 08/18/2012; Wikipedia BOOK REVIEW By Jerry Zwick THE CATCHER WAS A SPY: THE MYSTERIOUS LIFE OF MOE BERG By Nicholas Dawidoff This is a biography of Moe Berg. If you look in the dictionary for Renaissance Man, you might find his picture there. The man could do seemingly everything. He was a professional baseball player with the Boston Red Sox and Washington Senators, a spy for the OSS in Europe during WWII, educated in Princeton and the Sorbonne, and could speak a dozen languages. He was a child in an immigrant Jewish family. He had a difficult relationship with his pharmacist father who wanted him to become a lawyer (so he passed the Bar Exam on his first try but never really pursued this career). His first loves were always baseball, languages and spying. He led a mysterious and nomadic life, living with many personal friends, such as Albert Einstein and Joe DiMaggio, but never had a permanent residence. A wide variety of people were drawn to him, but he was always extremely secretive about his past as well as his personal story. The book in parts read like a sports digest, a spy novel, and a personality treatise. I found it a fascinating read and hard to put down. Page 4 of 10
