2 The Prez Box I have been asked If you don t attend synagogue or do Jewish prayers, what is left to being Jewish? Well, you need to participate in Jewish activities with other secular/humanistic/cultural Jews. We in the Pacific Community have celebrated the High Holidays with meaningful, non-theistic Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur services. And we decorated a Sukkah, somewhat traditionally. In October, we are going to get propositioned [that s a pun, folks] by the League of Women Voters, and we are going to have a comedy night. Join us for the education and for the fun! 4 Jews To Know by Lee Jacobi Mel Blanc was born as Melvin Jerome Blank in San Francisco in His parents were Russian-Jewish immigrants Frederick and Eva Blank. After graduating from high school in Portland, OR, he worked in vaudeville. Blanc began his radio career in 1927 at the age of 19. He moved to Los Angeles in 1932 where he met and married Estelle Rosenbaum. Blanc became a regular on The Jack Benny radio show, where his voice characters included a violin teacher, a parrot, a polar bear, a tormented department store clerk, a train announcer, and Benny s car (in desperate need of a tuneup). Blanc began in 1937 to voice characters for cartoons, especially the Warner Bros. Loony Toons. He is most famous for the voice of Bugs Bunny, as in the catchphrase What s up, Doc? He also voiced Porky Pig, Daffy Duck, Tweety Bird, Yosemite Sam, Wile E. Coyote, Woody Woodpecker, Barney Rubble, and others. During World War II, Blanc served as the voice of the hapless Private Snafu in war-themed animated shorts. In Blanc hadhis own radio show. Voice actors in the early years did not receive screen credits, but Blanc successfully demanded screen credit from in Mel Blanc was nicknamed The Man of a Thousand Voices. A doctor who once examined Blanc's throat found that he possessed unusually thick, powerful vocal cords that gave him an exceptional range. The doctor reported that they rivaled those of opera singer Enrico Caruso. Blanc died in 1989 at age 81 from coronary artery disease (he smoked cigarettes since age 9). He was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. His gravestone reads That s All, Folks. (from the Porky Pig character). 5 Sheila Says... Sixty minutes in an hour, twenty-four hours in a day, three hundred and sixty five days in a year. That adds up to a lot of minutes! When someone says to you Just a minute or in a sec, do they really mean just, one, or are they infringing on more of your time than that! Time has a specific length, but what one does with it, is definitely not constant. You can use it sparingly and eke it out; waste it, so that it has little meaning or simply ignore it, knowing, hopefully, that there is another hour, or day, coming your way. Young, people, seem to be oblivious to time. However, at some stage in their early years, they are introduced to it. They seem to know, instinctively when it is mealtime, bedtime, or playtime, even before they know what is a clock, or learn to read the time! Then comes school with recess time many think this is the best time of the school day and the school bell that rings for the end of the day, brings a cheer! Vacation time, is also something to look forward to. When people are out in the working world, every single day that is part of vacation time, is eagerly added up, culminating into a glorious period, of complete relaxation, or untold adventures. Many people have the time of their lives and come back with stories that fill hours entertaining their friends. Others find time of their hands with no idea as to how to fill the hours or days, so sad, to just waste time. When one is up in age, time takes on a different aspect. We have learned to take it more slowly, to relish the time we have, to think back on exciting times in our lives and to re-live the most cherished times. We also know how to idle away an hour or so, having the luxury of managing our own time, with no one to tell us how to fill it. We have also learned that as our future years diminish, not to waste time not to leave for tomorrow what can be done today! On the other hand, we know that some of the things we ignore today, will miraculously disappear and not have to be dealt with, tomorrow. That s a relief! ONE HOUR AT A TIME Page 5 of 6 Have you noticed that less and less people are wearing a watch these days? One would think they decided to ignore time, but you are wrong. Instead, they now have computers of all sizes and combinations and with one click, not only do they know what time it is, but are pressed from all directions with information and communications that either take up their time, or just WASTE time. How does one protect oneself from others intruding on personal time and space? I don t think I want to spend any further time on this subject. So will end with this thought Time waits for no one, so stay on your toes and don t let it pass you by!
