Fasting Guide Fasting is a spiritual discipline used for increasing faith, sanctification, repentance, power, strength and hearing from God. (Esther 4:16; Isaiah 58; Joel 1:14; Acts 13:2&3; Acts 14:23) Types of Fasting There are at least two known fasts in the Bible. 1. The Absolute Fast (Matthew 4:2) This is a total fast, which includes complete refraining from food or drink for the duration of the fast. There will be periods of time when you can do absolute during the month of January 2. The Partial Fast (Daniel 10:3) This fast is from particular food or things that hinder our spiritual growth. 3. The Daniel Fast This is a biblically based partial fast. There are two anchoring scriptures for the Daniel Fast. In Daniel 1 the Prophet ate only vegetables (that would have included fruits) and drank only water. So from these scriptures we get two of the guidelines for the fast YOUR 21-DAY OPTION 1: (see appendix for more information with SAMPLE meal plans) 1. Only fruits and vegetables 2. Only water for a beverage In Daniel 10 we read that the Prophet ate no meat nor any breads or foods and he drank no wine for 21 days. -OR YOUR 21-DAY OPTION 2: 1. Is still only fruits and vegetables but 2. Includes dairy, breads, pasta. NOTE: Fasting is not a diet or weight reduction plan. Consult your physician before you fast if you are any medications or required to eat for other health reasons (diabetics, etc). BISHOP DUDLEY AND NEW LIFE IN CHRIST INTERDENOMINATIONAL CHURCH ADVISE ALL LIFE CHANGERS TO CONSIDER THEIR PERSONAL HEALTH NEEDS AND TO CONSULT WITH THEIR PERSONAL PHYSICIAN PRIOR TO STARTING THIS OR ANY FAST. How to Prepare for the Daniel Fast Quiet Time: If you don't already have an established daily quiet time with the Lord, then this is an excellent opportunity to do so. Starting your day with God is a habit that will support your faith and growing intimacy with the Lord. During your Daniel Fast, be sure to set a daily time to come before the Lord, to study His Word and His ways. How to Begin Spiritually: Start with a clear personal goal in addition to our corporate goals. Be specific. Why are you fasting? Do you need direction, healing, restoration of marriage or family issues? Are you facing financial difficulties? Ask the Holy Spirit for guidance. Pray daily and read the Bible. Prepare spiritually by confessing your sins to God. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal areas of weakness. Forgive all who have offended you and ask forgiveness from those you may have offended (Mark 11:25; Luke 11:4; 17:3-4). Surrender your life fully to Jesus Christ and reject the worldly desires that try to hinder you (Romans 12:1-2). Scripture References for Fasting: Matthew 6:16-18, Matthew 9:14-15, Luke 18:9-14 Relation to Prayer and Reading of the Word: 1 Samuel 1:6-8, 17-18, Nehemiah 1:4, Daniel 9:3, 20, Joel 2:12, Luke 2:37, Acts 10:30, Acts 13:2 Corporate Fasting: 1 Samuel 7:5-6, Ezra 8:21-23, Nehemiah 9:1-3, Joel 2:15-16, Jonah 3:5-10, Acts 27:33-37 What to Expect during the Fast: When you fast your body detoxifies, eliminating toxins from your system. This can cause mild discomfort such as headaches and irritability during withdrawal from caffeine and sugars. And naturally, you will have hunger pains. Limit your activity and exercise moderately. Take time to rest. Fasting brings about miraculous results. Spend time listening to praise and worship music. Pray as often as you can throughout the day. Get away from the normal distractions as much as possible and keep your heart and mind set on seeking God's face. Remember that it is the attitude of a heart sincerely seeking Him to which God responds with a blessing. Whether you choose option 1 or 2, make it sacrificial for you. This fast is not about rules of eating this or that it is about JUST DOING IT just fasting for the purpose of drawing closer to God. May God greatly bless you as you fast!

Introduction/Overview Happy New Year! It's 2018 and it is time to start the new year off right. In order to have a prosperous new year it must be a year you do everything on purpose. That's what this 21 day fasting on purpose journal is all about. In 21 days doing Daniel fast option 1 or option 2 along with reading the book How to Live My Life on Purpose I guarantee you will have a successful year. This prayer journal complements the eight weeks of life group study How to Live My Life on Purpose. The book How to Live My Life on Purpose will take your spiritual journey to a place of purpose. Of course, you can do one without the other but they work best together. The 21-day fasting on purpose is three weeks of focusing on the foundational biblical principles of Time! Talent! Treasure! Options one or two are explained in detail in the Daniel fast instructions. How to turn these three Ts into intentionality that feeds your purpose is key. Each week begins on Sunday with the daily word, a point to ponder (explaining today's truth), then a simple powerful prayer and space for you to pen your thoughts. There are also more extensive devotions in the book. When you combine the devotions with your Daniel fast, you are fueling your life with purpose. 1 Peter 1:18 says for you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers. The Greek word empty as defined in the text means without meaning or purpose. This year you will grow closer to the one who redeemed you to live a life of meaning and purpose. Let's begin the journey. Page 3

Week One January 1 7 Daniel Fast Option 1 or 2 Theme: Purposeful with my TIME This week is all about fasting to know what time it is and not waste it. The Scripture says the Sons of Issachar knew what time it was. They knew that the conditions were right to make David king. They knew once time passes it does not come around again the same way. Therefore, to that end, your purpose is connected to how you recognize and use the time you have. For the next seven days, focus your fast and devotion on making every day count. You are literally living to fulfil the dash between your birthdate and death date on your tombstone. The old saying goes, time is money. Time is also purpose. Know what time it is in your life so you can fulfill your purpose. Day 1 Monday, January 1, 2017 Page 4 Today s Truth: Ps 90:10 Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures; yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away. Point to Ponder: Scripture says we have a certain number of days to fulfill our purpose. Since we have a limited amount of time, we should make every day count. Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to quickly determine my purpose because each day I don't know it is a day I've lost forever. Day 2 Tuesday, January 2, 2017 Today s Truth: Luke 14:28-30 Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures; yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away. Point to Ponder: When Jesus encouraged the disciples to count the cost, he was telling them not to waste time on things they couldn't finish. Point to Pray: Dear Lord help me to quickly assess what the cost is to fulfill my purpose so I don't waste time.

Day 3 - Wednesday, January 3 rd Prayer 715am x Today s Truth: Philippians 2:13 For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him. Point to Ponder: God places his eternal desire to please him in your heart. When you decide to please God is when you begin finding your purpose. Point to Pray: Dear Lord help me to please you in all I say and do. Page 5 Day 4 Thursday, January 4 th Today s Truth: Ephesians 2:10 For we are God s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. Point to Ponder: You ve heard it said, you are a piece of work, well now you know you really are. Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to remember you made me with your purpose. Day 5 Friday, January 5 th Today s Truth: Jeremiah 29:11 I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord. They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. Point to Ponder: Purpose without a plan is planning to fail. God has plans to prosper you and fulfill his purpose in your life. Point to Pray: Dear Lord help me to know the plans you have for my life so I don't waste any time.

Page 6 Day 6 Saturday, January 6 th Today s Truth: Ecclesiastes 8:6 For there is a proper time and procedure for every delight, though a man's trouble is heavy upon him. Point to Ponder: Time is of the essence so wasting it will get you nowhere. Know the proper time and it will help you know your purpose. Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to know what time it is. Day 7 Sunday, January 7 th Today s Truth: Eccl 3:11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end. Point to Ponder: Part of knowing your purpose is knowing eternity lives in you and will not be satisfied until you fulfill your God-given purpose. Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to strive to know my purpose so the thirst of eternity will be quenched.

Week Two: January 8 th - 14 th Daniel Fast Option 1 or 2 Theme: Purposeful with my Talent This week is all about fasting to find and grow your talents. In Matthew 25, the kingdom of God is likened to a place where everyone is given talents according to their ability. The ruler of the kingdom gives three people talents and expects them to grow the talents. Talents in the text is not just gifts or abilities, but money. Jesus tells the parable with the connotation of money because he wants us to understand talents in light of our investments. When you invest in your talent, it grows. Your talent is directly connected to your purpose. The more proficient you are in your talent the more purposeful you will be in life. Your talent is what you've been called and equipped to do. It is your uniqueness. It is your thumbprint or your uniqueness. Discover it and fulfill your purpose through it. Page 7 Day 8 Monday, January 8 th Today s Truth: Romans 9:17 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh, "for this very purpose I raised you up, to demonstrate my power in you, and that my name might be proclaimed throughout the whole earth." Point to Ponder: God has given you incredible talent so he can operate through you and accomplish his purpose in your life. Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to use my talent for your purpose. Day 9 Tuesday, January 9 th Today s Truth: Matt 25:29 For whoever has will be given more, and they will have an abundance. Whoever does not have, even what they have will be taken from them. Point to Ponder: God has given each one of us talents according to our ability. Failure to use the talents you have will result in not accomplishing your purpose. Point to Pray: Dear Lord help me to use, to the very best of my ability, whatever talent you have given me.

Day 10 Wednesday, January 10 th Today s Truth: Judges 16:18 18 When Delilah saw that he had told her everything, she sent word to the rulers of the Philistines, Come back once more; he has told me everything. So the rulers of the Philistines returned with the silver in their hands. 19 After putting him to sleep on her lap, she called for someone to shave off the seven braids of his hair, and so began to subdue him. And his strength left him. Point to Ponder: Sampson wasted his talent because he laid his head in the lap of Delilah. His overconfidence cost him his life. He only accomplished his purpose in death. Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me not to lose my talent nor my life over a moment of temptation. Page 8 Day 11 Thursday, January 11 th Today s Truth: 1 Thessalonians 4:7 For God has not called us for the purpose of impurity, but in sanctification. Point to Ponder: Purpose and purity produce a worthy talent to accomplish God's will in the earth. Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to stay clean so you can use me. Day 12 Friday, January 12 th Today s Truth: Acts 26:16 'But get up and stand on your feet; for this purpose I have appeared to you, to appoint you a minister and a witness not only to the things which you have seen, but also to the things in which I will appear to you; Point to Ponder: Carrying out the purpose of God means using your talent.

Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to get about the business of using my talent to minister for you. Page 9 Day 13 Saturday, January 13 th Today s Truth: Romans 9:21 Or does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for common use? Point to Ponder: God has the right to fashion you in whatever way he wants to. He makes you for the talent not the talent for you. Your talent fits you. Use it. Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to know I am your vessel fit for your purpose. Day 14 Sunday, January 14 th Today s Truth: 1 Cor 12: Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good. 8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines. Point to Ponder: My gifts are talents waiting to be used to prosper the kingdom. Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me embrace the gift given me by your Holy Spirit.

Week Three: January nd Daniel Fast Option 1 or 2 + No Media Week Theme: Purposeful with my Treasure It does not matter if you know who you are if you do not have the money to enable and empower your individual reality. When you do not know your purpose, you literally spend your life away with the little money you have. Money has a purpose and it will attach itself to a person with purpose. Money has no feelings, no preference, no one that it likes better than you, and money has no conscious. Money just is. The one who has cattle on a thousand hills to fulfill purpose in your life gives money to you. If there is no purpose in your life, there is no reason for money to associate itself with you and God won t keep giving you money only for you not to know the purpose it was given. Money has purpose when it is in the hands of someone who knows their purpose. Money will purposefully change lives and do great things through you. God has a plan for you and your money and the quicker you learn that plan, the quicker you will turn the corner from living just enough to living in more than enough. The plan starts with you and the prosperity of God. The psalmist poetically said this about his providential care: Psalm 50:10 For every beast of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills. Psalm 23:1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. Page 10 Day 15 Monday, January 15 th Today s Truth: Gen 14: Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High, 19 and he blessed Abram, saying, Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Creator of heaven and earth. 20 And praise be to God Most High, who delivered your enemies into your hand. Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything. Point to Ponder: Abram was able to find his purpose after he gave tithe to God. Note this was before the law so the tide predated the law. Tithes enable God to support your life and your purpose like Abraham Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to trust you with my tithe. Day 16 Tuesday, January 16 th Today s Truth: Lev 27:30 30 A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord; it is holy to the Lord.

Mal 3:10 10 Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this, says the Lord Almighty, and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it. Point to Ponder: Everything belongs to God. To hold onto it is stealing from God and vacating funds for your purpose. Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to bring my tithe to your house and stop using it in my house Page 11 Day 17 Wednesday, January 17 th Prayer 715am x Today s Truth: Philippians 4:19 19 And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus. Point to Ponder: Without God's supply, you cannot find your purpose. Purpose costs money and God has all your needs; but you have to give purposely. Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to give on purpose. Day 18 Thursday, January 18 th Today s Truth: 2 Corinthians 9:7 Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. Point to Ponder: Giving opens up the door for more. More supplies you what you need to fulfill your purpose in life. No money no purpose. Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to become a giver so I can accomplish my purpose

Day 19 Friday, January 19 th Today s Truth: Matt 6:21 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Point to Ponder: When you look for what you treasure, look no further than your heart. Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to find treasure in my heart to give to your work. Page 12 Day 20 Saturday, January 20 th Today s Truth: Gal 6:7 7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. Point to Ponder: God guarantees if you plant, you will reap. You have his word. You just have to purpose to do it - even when you are weary in well doing. Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to plant and wait for the harvest so I can accomplish your purpose with the proceeds. Day 21 Sunday, January 21 st Today s Truth: Gen 8:22 As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease. Point to Ponder: The seed has a purpose and God said it would accomplish it whenever it is released in the earth. Point to Pray: Dear Lord, help me to purposefully release a financial seed so it can fulfill its purpose and supply all my needs.

Appendix B First Fruits History & Biblical Overview The Historical Context of First Fruits: What is First Fruit? The significance of this holy day, like most other biblical festivals, can be largely understood by its name. First Fruits is one of the shelosh regalim, the three festivals for which every Jewish male goes to Jerusalem if possible (Deuteronomy 16:16). First Fruits is included in this exclusive list. It is prophetically significant in God s plan for his people. God s faithfulness in providing the early wheat harvest increases hopefulness for an abundant fall harvest (Sukkot). Giving thanks for present provision leads to faith for future addition. Lev. 2:12 The last day of the Unleavened Bread is the celebration of the First fruits (Yom HaBikkurim), taking to the Temple the first fruit, the first born animal, the first sheaf of barley... it is symbolic of Jesus being the first of the First fruits (1Cor.15:23) When is it given? The feast of the first fruits were held consecutively on the fourteenth, fifteenth and sixteenth days of the first month of the Jewish calendar. How is it given? Lev. 23:9-10 Why did they do it? God claims the first fruits of everything. He has first claim on our lives. Herb-Roasted Idaho Potato Fries 1-pound small baking potatoes 2 tsp extra-virgin olive oil 1/2 tsp dried thyme 1/2 tsp dried rosemary 1/4 tsp salt Preheat the oven to 425 F. Coat a heavy baking sheet with cooking spray. Cut each potato in half crosswise. Place the halves cut side down on the cutting board and cut each into 4 wedges. Place the potatoes in a mound on the prepared baking sheet. In a cup, mix the oil, thyme, rosemary, salt, and pepper. Pour over the potato wedges and toss to mix well. Spread the potatoes out on the sheet. Bake, stirring 2 or 3 times, until tender and lightly browned, about 35 minutes. Serve hot. Stir Fry Vegetables 1 red onion, sliced 3 stalks celery, thinly sliced ½ cup broccoli, chopped 1 bell pepper, sliced 1 tsp. sea salt 3 carrots, peeled and sliced ½ cup cauliflower, chopped 1 cup zucchini, thinly sliced 1 cup yellow squash, thinly sliced 1 Tbsp.
