1 2017 Israel Experiences Kitat Shalom (3N) - Israeli Shuk Students in Kitat Shalom have been preparing for this day for a few weeks. Drawing on our students' interest in social play, their renewed interest in the solution kit, (and specifically the solution of trading something that we have for something that we want,) and interest in beads and stringing, we offered our students the opportunity to create an Israeli jewelry store. The children created enough bracelets to sell to the whole school. Our students also had a chance to see what Israeli money looks like and even made some crayon rubbings of the coins. The children got to work making paper shkalim of their own. The students made shkalim and counted them every day. We had thirty-four shkalim to use at our Shuk. We practiced using money and our bracelets to create the store experience. The students organized the kitchen area by storing all of the dishes and making space for a store. In the following days we continued to invite our students to use their shkalim to buy jewelry. "I don't want to buy jewelry," said Yaakov. He ran off for a few moments and came back with a handful of cars. "Here you can sell this too," he said, placing his cars on the table where Michal was set up with her goods. "The name of my store is Tzafat Market," said Michal. "My store is Shomrai Store," said Seth. "I want to call my store Shekel," Shalom decided.
2 Kitat Gefen (2N) - Archeological Dig The children used shovels to discover and uncover buried ancient Israeli artifacts. The artifacts include ancient coins from different time periods, clay shards with Hebrew inscriptions, and Jewish religious items such as washing cups.
3 Kitat Rimon (Pre K) - Israeli Dance Morah Naomi from Kitat Rimon led an Israeli dance for the students. The children held hands and learned some simple steps as we moved around the circle. Morah Naomi put on traditional Israeli music to get our feet moving. It was good exercise. Yeminah, Semolah, Kadima, Achora, we sang and danced!
4 Kitat Simcha (2B) - Make Your Own Chumus Kitat Simcha prepared potato bourekas to be shared with the whole school in celebration of Yom Ha atzmaut. The Morah poured potato flakes into a bowl. The students took turns adding the rest of the ingredients: margarine, soy milk, salt, and pepper, as well as some hot water. "Be careful!" Effie exclaimed, helping the morah remind the children to stay away from the hot kettle. Chana Fraydel began to mix the ingredients together, and then passed the bowl to Goldie. Kivi asked for a turn and soon everyone had their chance to help mix. The children each received one square piece of pastry dough. The morah dropped a spoonful of potato in its center and demonstrated how to pinch the dough together to make a traditional Israeli boureka. The children loved working with the dough and soon mastered turning their square into a triangle We baked them in the oven. Each student got to enjoy this special treat. Each class came into Kitat Simcha and blended their very own hummus using chickpeas, lemons, garlic, salt and oil.
5 Kitat Tamar (Pre K) - Cafe Tamar To continue the celebration for Israel s Independence Day, Yom Ha atzmaut, each class was tasked with creating an Israeli experience for the entire school. Last week our class decided in a mid-morning meeting to prepare a cafe. Last week, the class worked on Monday to bake pita bread, and on Tuesday we tasted the bread that we made and planned and designed menus. On Wednesday, the children cut up two tremendous bowls of Israeli salad and peeled the skin off of chickpeas and made hummus. Today is the cafe, Gavi announced. He held a large plastic bag. I brought a big cash register. We can use it at the café. Soon Mimi arrived and saw Gavi s machine. She noticed that the cash register she had brought from home was displayed on the round table. Where are the credit cards? she asked. She proceeded to pull out her plastic bag as she searched quickly. Here they are, she exclaimed. When you swipe them they make a sound. Mimi demonstrated and swiped her credit cards several times. The children went straight to work. They set the tables, filled a large dispenser with water, served the salad, and put the finishing touches on the tables. Our class was lucky to have the first time slot for our Israeli experience, and therefore got to taste-test the food first. The children were pleased after the experience. Everything was delicious, Avi enthused. The children were proud of their accomplishments and the work they put in to prepare it.
