2 Sisterhood Scoop August and September are always busy months. Kids go back to school, summer is ending and very soon the High Holidays will be here. Sisterhood just completed another very successful honey sale. Thank you to Andrea Grossman for chairing the project again this year and to all who purchased honey! We ve had some very interesting and enjoyable Rosh Hodesh meetings recently. Thanks to Betsy Goodman for hosting us at Fertile Crescent Farms for a tour of the greenhouses and orchard, and for the fresh veggies for dinner. Thanks also to Nancy Skid, Darlene Golbitz and Karen Pollak for hosting our recent event at Its Yours Pottery. Both evenings were delightful and enjoyed by all. Volunteers are needed for two upcoming projects. Every year, Sisterhood donates jars of honey to Jewish Family Service to support their Project Tzedakah for Rosh Hashanah. This year, we're looking for a few volunteers to help assemble packages on Monday, September 15, 1:00 p.m., in the JCC Social Hall. It s also time for our annual Shana Tova project. We re calling all congregants to wish them a sweet New Year, and we need volunteers to make the phone calls. If you can help with either project, heatherkelln@yahoo.com. Help us prepare to bring in the Jewish New Year at our September Dames and Drinks. On Thursday, September 11, 7:00 p.m., we are headed to Joni Brooks home for a girl s night out. If you d like to join us, please contact our hostess at jnjbrooks05@yahoo.com to RSVP by Monday, September 8. If you want to carpool, just let Joni know and she ll send you a list of who else is attending. I want to thank the members of Sisterhood who have worked with me over the past two years: Shira Abraham, Saundra Clarke, Becca Finkelstein, Andrea Grossman, Sara Kohen, Debbi Roitstein and Melissa Schop. It was great to work with all of you. I am excited to be working with an amazing group of women for this next year. Many of them are already hard at work planning for the upcoming year. Treasurer: Danni Christensen Rosh Hodesh Steering Committee: Liz Feldstern, Cheryl Lerner, Aveva Shukert, Nancy Skid and Alice Weiss Hamantashen Chair: Linda Fischer Dames and Drinks Hosts: 9/11 - Joni Brooks; 11/18 - Marla Hockfeld; 2/19 - Melissa and Sherry Shapiro Our calendar is full this year with many opportunities for learning, socializing and serving our congregation. We are looking forward to a paid member brunch on January 25, Sisterhood Shabbat on January 31, and reviving an all-new Boutique in November of I urge you to become a member of Sisterhood and join us at one of our many events. We still have opportunities for you to get involved, to get to know people, and to connect with each other. Hea!er Kelln President, Beth El Sisterhood 2

3 Making High Holiday Services a Meaningful Experience by Hazzan Michael Krausman The Holidays will be upon us in a few weeks so this is a great time to start to prepare for them. Here is a quick reference guide for making High Holiday services a personally meaningful experience. A) Before the Holy Days Look over the Mahzor (High Holiday prayer book). Compare different versions of the Mahzor; find alternate readings or translations. Visit the library or an online Jewish book store and select a book about the prayers or Holidays. B) Personal Experience The function of many of our prayers is to place us back into history, so that we can feel what it was like. Think of a time when you felt the presence of God, or felt profoundly Jewish. C) Z'chut Avot Many times during services we appeal for forgiveness due to the merit of our ancestors; find out about your own ancestors. Ask kids to interview their grandparents about past Holiday and personal experiences, and discuss what they learned during festival meals or before services. D) Know Your Roots Hebrew is based on a system of three or four letter roots, around which all of the various forms and conjugations of words are formed. By looking at a few of these, you will get an idea of some of the concepts the author of a particular prayer is seeking to convey. These roots can be expressed in English transliteration as a series of letters separated by dashes, like the following: B-R-Ch. This conveys the concept of Praise or Blessing. Thus the word BRaCha, means blessing, as in blessed are you our God. When this root is used we are evoking the presence of the Creator in what we seek or in that for which we are grateful. So BiRCHat Kohanim is the Priestly blessing recited on the Holidays, Festivals and on other significant occasions. Interestingly, the Hebrew word for knee is BeReCh; we often bend our knee when acknowledging God s presence. K-D-Sh. This conveys the concept of Holiness. God is the Holiest of all entities because there is only one God. Thus in Judaism, holiness is synonymous with uniqueness the closer we get to God, the holier we can become. So KidDuSh is the sanctification of Shabbat & festivals, usually made over wine. KiDuSha, the expression of God s holiness, is found during the recitation of the Amidah. KaDdiSh is the prayer said by mourners, and KiDuShin is the Hebrew word for wedding. M-L-Ch/K. This conveys the concept of monarchy. God is described as MeLeCh Ha Olam, the ruler of the universe. The MaLChuyot section of the Rosh Hashanah service cites texts focusing on the monarchy of God. Also, we often sing the popular prayer, Avinu MaLKeinu, Our Parent Our Monarch, pointing out the continuum between justice & mercy that defines our relationship with God. Z-Ch/K/R. This conveys the concept of Remembering. So we have ZiChRonot, a section of the Rosh Hashanah service that cites texts focusing on the memory of the relationship between God and our ancestors. Many gather on Yom Kippur and other festivals for the YiZKoR memorial service. Also, we have the Israeli version of Memorial Day: Yom Ha ZiKaRon. Tz-D-K. This conveys the concept of Justice. Thus the bible implores us, TzeDeK, TzeDeK Tirdof; Justice, Justice shall you pursue. We come to the realization before God during the High Holidays that we are not TzaDiKim, completely righteous people like our great sages; we have indeed committed transgressions. Prior to Yom Kippur it is customary to give TzeDaKah (charitable donations); i.e. doing that which is right and just. E) Prepare for Personal Prayers Opportunities for personal prayers/ meditations are provided at the end of the Amidah (silent prayer) and other places throughout the service. Bring a list of things you want to thank God for, things you want to ask for, or things you don t understand. Write prayers or poetry that you can include in the service similar to the PIYUTIM, or liturgical poems, that are already part of the service. List things about yourself you would like to improve in the coming year. Think about future plans/goals. Before Yom Kippur, it is customary to ask for Michilah (forgiveness) from anyone you may have harmed either intentionally or inadvertently. Think about who these people may be. F) Buy You Own MAHZOR: Paper clip in your own: prayers, readings, meditations or personal lists from above, transliterations, names of family members to be remembered at Yizkor or during the Martyrology, which is said during Yom Kippur. Please feel free to contact me for help with any of these suggestions or to explore other possibilities. By doing a small amount of preplanning, the services that we experience together this year, can be the most meaningful ever. The High Holidays provide each of us with the opportunity for renewal and growth. May the journey that we embark upon during these Days of Awe lead to renewed strength of our conviction and our personal relationship with the Almighty. Laurel, Zev & Zach join me in wishing all of the Beth El Mishpocha & their dear ones A Year of Blessing; a Goot Gezunt Yohr. Hazzan Michael Krausman 3

4 President s Corner As the summer draws to a close, we begin preparing for the return to our more routine schedule. Children are back in school and activities at Beth El are picking up. You ll discover a wide variety of activities for all ages. BESTT will be starting classes, High Holiday services will be taking place, and our adult education classes will begin. I hope you will chose to take part in some of these programs that will bring you and your family together with other Beth El members, allowing you to build stronger relationships. We want everyone to participate and be part of Beth El! A few weeks ago, I was able to visit with members of our Sulam for Emerging Leaders group during their concluding session. They were asking questions of me and others on the Executive Committee about how Beth El decides what and how things happen. They are all part of the future of Beth El. One question came up that made me think others in our congregation may have the same question: "How do I get involved?" The easy answer was that activities are listed in the KOL, in the Mid Month Mailer, and can be found on our website, But that wasn't what they wanted to know. They wanted to know how they could be involved in making Beth El grow and function, not just in attending functions. We let them know that getting involved would start by joining one of our many committees. That is where new ideas are developed. Whether you are interested in Social Action, Young Adults or Religious Life, there is a committee that s right for you. For a complete list and descriptions of Beth El committees, visit our website and look for Committees under the About Us tab. You will find the chairpersons listed with their phone number and . Go ahead and contact them to ask how you can get involved. On Sunday, September 7, starting at 9:30 a.m., we will be holding an Involvement Fair. There will be tables where you can learn about opportunities available for you to get involved at and for Beth El. Sign up to join a committee, to usher at the High Holidays, learn more about Men's Club, Sisterhood and the Young Adults Committee. Come and see how you can be a part of Beth El. Getting involved is a great way to build relationships with others! Joel Rich President, Board of Trustees 4 Operation Isaiah: Sharing Food & Clothes with Those in Need Each Yom Kippur, it has become a Beth El Synagogue tradition to heed Isaiah s message to feed the hungry: This is my chosen fast... Share your bread with the hungry. Take the homeless into your home. Clothe the naked when you see him, Do not turn away from people in need. (Isaiah 58:6-7) Again this year, we will collect nonperishable food and gently-used clothing to be distributed to the needy. Our collection will take place during the entire month of Elul. We will have bins in the community court for your donations beginning on Wednesday, August 27 up to and including the evening of Kol Nidrei services on Friday, October 3. Consider this alternative Purchase Beth El Grocery Certificates, to be donated to the Omaha Food Bank. To chose this alternative, fill in the online form or call the office. You will be performing a double mitzvah this High Holiday Season. 5 A New Beginning - Part III By Eadie Tsabari, Director of Congregational Learning The school is ready, books have been ordered, teachers have their assignments and we are eagerly anticipating the return of our students to BESTT. It has been a wonderful summer. We know that you have busy schedules with school, sports, dance and music. We know that perhaps Hebrew school isn t the first thing you put on a college resume when your kids are applying to schools. However, we also know that building community, leadership skills and a safe environment to raise your kids in the traditions of their ancestors, makes Beth El Talmud Torah an essential part of your life. We are truly blessed that many of our students take the opportunity either to go to Jewish Day School or Jewish summer camp. We know how very important that is to the development of their Jewish identity. Some of your kids are the only Jewish students in their entire school. Here they don t have to explain who they are or why they do things. They only have to come and embrace the love they find here for being Jewish. And don t forget - Beth El is their home. Some of your families have been here for generations and that, too, has an important value. Most of your kids will have their most important lifecycle events right here in this building. A wise teacher in our school once said that being Jewish isn t an activity, but a lifestyle. We hope that you will take every opportunity that we offer here to be part of our BESTT family. As we continue the month of Elul and take the opportunity to reflect on the upcoming year, I can t help but be grateful for all of the successes that we have achieved at BESTT and at Beth El Synagogue. In the class I taught last year at BESTT, Living Jewish Values, my favorite chapter had to do with gratitude. The Hebrew term for gratitude is hakarat hatov, which means, literally, "recognizing the good." Practicing gratitude means recognizing the good that is already yours. Gratitude is perhaps the cornerstone of Jewish life, an emotion to which even a person who is not observant can be open. Maybe we don t know how to daven or run a service. Perhaps our Hebrew skills are weak or don t exist. But being grateful is meaningful and attainable for everyone if we just take the time to try. As the New Year begins I hope you will take one of the many opportunities to learn and be part of Beth El. Take a class, volunteer in the school, come to one extra service a month. Make a change in your life. Be a great Jewish example for your kids. Be grateful that we have so many wonderful opportunities in our lives. I know I am. 8 Men s Club Corner - Looking for (more than) A few Good Men! Did you know there are approximately 340 men in our Beth El Community? As impressive as this number is, the Men s Club had only 41 paid members last year. This year, I want to challenge all Beth El men to help us achieve our goal to significantly grow the Men s Club Membership. By growing the club, we will be in a better position to launch new initiatives and maintain our traditional role in the synagogue. Membership dues are only $36 annually and are utilized to help support free or nominal cost Men s Club events, Beth El Synagogue, BESTT, and our community. Membership forms will be mailed out soon, and we have a new online enrollment option to streamline the process through Chaverweb. Strengthen our community, build camaraderie, support our cause... join The Men s Club today! I was very pleased with the turnout at the August Jews and Brews BBQ. It was great to see so many familiar faces, and we were happy to welcome a few newcomers. The drinks were cold, the food was great, and the conversation was nonstop. Thank you to all who attended, to Ben Shapiro for cooking, and to Ari Kohen for organizing the event. Hopefully, we can keep the momentum rolling for our next shindig in October. We are looking forward to Storm Chasers baseball & fireworks on Sunday, August 31 at Werner Park. A total of 48 people have signed up to attend the game, and thanks to the generosity of an anonymous Men s Club donor, along with matching contributions from Beth El Sisterhood and our fabulous program director, all families attended for free! Men s Club is gearing up for a very busy fall. We need your help serving breakfast at the Back-to-BESTT waffle breakfast on September 7 and throughout the High Holiday season. Please help ensure the needs of our synagogue are met by signing up to usher for the High Holidays on September & October 3-4, and/or to raise and break down the sukkah after morning minyan on September 28, October 5 and October 19. If you are able to help us with all or any of these efforts, please me at theblairs@rocketmail.com. Thank you to the men & women who have already signed up. When we all work together, big jobs are much easier! On Saturday, October 11, you can fulfill the mitzvah of dwelling in a sukkah while enjoying an evening of laughter and relaxation with Men s Club & Sisterhood. Thanks to Hazzan & Laurel Krausman for again hosting Jews N Brews and Dames & Drinks: The Sukkot Edition! Come join us at this event as we continue to build stronger relationships within the community while having fun. As you can see, we are an active club that makes meaningful contributions to our community. We welcome any ideas or suggestions you may have to make the club even better, and I hope most of you will join the club and encourage your peers to do the same. If you have any questions regarding the club or would like to make a donation above the membership cost, feel free to contact me directly. We are here to serve you and meet the needs of our community. B Shalom, Jason Blair President, Beth El Men s Club 8
