3 ROOTED IN TRADITION. EMBRACING CHANGE. 3 How Selichot Prepares Us for the High Holy Day Season By Hazzan Michael Krausman The official liturgical kickoff of the High Holy Day season is the Selichot service. Selichot is a poignant collection of prayers of repentance and supplication that is recited for a week preceding Rosh Hashanah in the Ashkenazi community and for an entire month by the Sephardim. In most Ashkenazi synagogues, the beginning of the period of Selichot is marked by a special late evening service held on the Saturday evening preceding Rosh Hashanah. Selichot prayers facilitate the worshipper s ability to acknowledge those areas in which improvement may be required and embark on a path that leads to repentance or Teshuvah and Mechila or forgiveness. Although many of these prayers originate from earlier times, some as far back as the time of the Mishna (5th century BCE-1st century CE), the first actual collection of Selichot, can be found in the Siddur of the great Ninth Century sage, Rav Amram. Rabbi Abraham Rosenfeld, who served for many years as a Hazzan is a noted compiler and editor of prayer books. In the introductory section to his comprehensive, annotated compendium of Selichot prayers first published in England in 1956, Rabbi Rosenfeld indicates that some of those moving supplications date as far back as the seventh century of the Common Era. Remarkably, the service compiled by Rav Amram is very close to the Selichot service we still perform in modern times. There are various types of poetry which make up the Selichot service, including some which have repeated refrains and some which are alphabetical acrostics. Most of these prayers are comprised of biblical verses stitched together by very gifted liturgical poets. These writers include Sa adia Gaon ( ) and Rav Amram Gaon ( ) who also authored texts that appear in our Machzor (High Holy Day prayer book). Also included in the Selichot service is the Vidui or confessional and portions of Tachanun prayers of supplication. Serving as a refrain between all of this prayer and poetry is the recitation of the Thirteen Attributes of God introduced by the prayer El Melech Yoshev Al Kisei Rachamim, God is the Monarch who is seated on the throne of mercy. El Melech Yoshev is first found in the siddur of the 9th century liturgical pioneer, Rav Amram Gaon as noted above. Rabbinic literature suggests that God spends some time seated on the throne of justice and some time on the throne of mercy. As the introductory verse suggests, this composition depicts God as a merciful, compassionate monarch who forgives our sins and mitigates the severity of the punishment we really deserve. The image is evoked of Moses as he conferred with God in on Mount Sinai. Moses asked how he as a human could approach our (continued on page 5) Jeff and Mari Rensch Voted #1 in Real Estate 4 years in a row JEFF MARI mari@renschgroup.com Thank you Beth El Synagogue Proud to Support Beth El Synagogue th & Dodge Street rd & K Plaza th & Maple Road Your West Omaha ENT & Audiology Connection Burke Street, Suite 200 Omaha, NE omahaentclinic.com Contact Kjirsten Finnegan to place an ad today! kfinnegan@4lpi.com or (800) x2659 TONI ROSEN CERTIFIED RESIDENTIAL SPECIALIST Toni.Rosen@cbshome.com For ad info. call Beth El Synagogue, Omaha, NE A 4C

4 4 BETH EL SYNAGOGUE NEWSLETTER President s Corner Thoughts from a Shabbat at Summer Camp By Jay Gordman, President of the Board of Trustees Greetings from the North Woods of Wisconsin! I just had the privilege of spending a fantastic Shabbat at Camp Ramah. I went into the weekend interested in learning what makes our kids want to go back to Camp Ramah (and other Jewish summer camps) year after year. The Shabbat Experience We arrived to see camp in full action with kids and staff busy with activities. Late in the afternoon you could sense something was changing. The camp was quieting down and next thing you knew, all of the kids and staff began to arrive at the lakefront for Shabbat services as the sun began to set behind the trees. On Shabbat morning, all of the age groups had their respective services followed by a day of spending time together as a full camp hanging out, playing sports, swimming or just walking around camp. I even had the rare opportunity of spending time with my family without the interruptions of everyday life. At sunset, each group had spirited Havdalah services followed by group activities. Sunday morning, camp was back in action. Kids, staff, grounds keepers, etc., all back to their activities and routines. Two Lessons The success of Camp Ramah comes down two concepts Building community and embracing Shabbat. Building Community Camp does an amazing job of building community. During the week, there are several minicommunities by age group (Aidoht) that pray together, dine together, learn together, work together and experience activities together. The older groups even volunteer and travel together. Additional time is spent in special activities such as art, music, sports, boating, singing sessions, etc The list is long. Each camper can choose what is a good fit for their likes. During these activities, additional relationships are formed. By creating opportunities for these kids from varying backgrounds with different interests to come together, a strong and diverse community is created. Additionally, our new campers quickly go from stranger in a strange land to members of the family in a matter of hours. Our new campers are having a great experience at camp this summer because the staff and campers make an extra effort to make them feel at home. Embracing Shabbat The second element that makes Camp Ramah so special is that every week on Friday afternoon, the camp begins to change from a fast paced, activity-based environment with tight schedules to an environment where time doesn t matter. It is only about enjoying the moment. The reality is that most of us are so busy and always pushing with work, family activities, caring for loved ones that we don t take time for ourselves. Disconnecting for 30 hours started off with a bit of anxiety but turned into one of the most peaceful weekends in recent memory. The camp kids are lucky enough to have this all summer long. I even asked a few of our Omaha kids how it was to experience all of this time, disconnected. While they all expressed a bit of apprehension they all admitted that it removes a key stress in their life. So how does this apply to Beth El? First off, we need to acknowledge that we have a strong and vibrant congregation with many minicommunities, whether connected because of the age of our kids or tied to an activity of interest like Torah Study, The Miriam Initiative or Shabbat Tables. We also have a strong community that comes together for each other, no matter what the need. We have an opportunity to continue to build these minicommunities that can come together as a full congregation. We look forward to evolving how we approach in-reach with fresh thinking to build connections like never before. The reality though is that community is a two-way street. We need you to take time to learn about the great opportunities at Beth El and give them a try. If you have ideas for new ways to build community at Beth El, please contact me with your suggestions at the below. Jay Gordman jgordman@gmail.com

5 Hazzan s Column (continued from page 3) Creator. The answer can be found in the text of El Melech Yoshev: God instructs us to recite [and model] God s attributes. Just as the best way to honor our physical parents is to practice and emulate their qualities, principles and values, our divine parent requires that we strive for holiness by being guided by God s characteristics. Mercy, compassion, justice, slowness to anger, performance of acts of loving kindness and the pursuit of truth are examples from the litany of divine qualities that are recited throughout our services. Moses learned that not only is this emulation the best way to serve the Lord but also the path which can lead to developing our personal relationship with God. As we prepare for and experience the Holy Days, we can be mindful of the fact that since there are many ways to communicate with the Almighty, possessing a tremendous knowledge of the prayer service, while being a goal towards which we should strive, is not an absolute requirement. By participating in the silent meditation or humming a melody along with the Hazzan, or by offering sincere personal prayers, one can be a vital part of the ROOTED IN TRADITION. EMBRACING CHANGE. 5 communal offering of prayer. Most importantly, as we prepare to enter the Holy Day Season, we must bear in mind the lesson learned and transmitted by Moses as described in the El Melech Yoshev Prayer: striving to reach closer to the Almighty by incorporating into our lives God s Holy attributes is the essential way to enhance the bond we have with our Creator. In the Bible, this was done by using small stones to build a marker. For this reason, we have placed urns throughout the cemetery with stones for you to place on your loved one s grave. While we are aware some families place flowers and other items on their loved one s grave, this is not the practice at the Beth El Cemetery. Flowers represent wealth and a division of class, and in death we are all equal. Any items left at the grave can hinder our perpetual care of your loved one s grave. For that reason, we ask that you not leave these items, as they will be removed when tending to the graves. 11 Another Great Summer for our Kids Amy Dworin, Director of Youth Engagement ROOTED IN TRADITION. EMBRACING CHANGE. 11 August 12 is National Middle Child Day, but you probably forgot about it. Middle children are thought of as neglected, confused and attention-starved (Jan Brady, for example), and on television they are always the funny-looking one (think Stephanie Tanner or Cory Matthews). It could be argued that history s first murder victim is also history s first middle child. Abel, the second son of Adam and Eve, was younger brother to Cain and older brother to Seth. We all know how things worked out for him. As a middle child myself, I am compelled to point out that middle children are also thought of as independent, creative and diplomatic. Warren Buffett, the second-coolest middle child living in Omaha, Bill Gates and the majority of United States presidents all happen to be middle children. Now, I can assure you that this is not the self-indulgent rant of an under-appreciated middle child. Yet, in thinking about things that are overlooked and need to be loved for their own special qualities, I can t help but think about the misunderstood middle child of Jewish Youth Groups, Bilu USY. When I met Bilu 2 ½ years ago, eight of the fourteen active members were freshman. It is crazy to think that those freshmen are now entering their senior year of high school! They have grown into amazing leaders and kind hearted young adults. Together, they have redecorated the youth lounge, helped organize Beth El s presence at the March For Our Lives, worked at Kamp Kef, hosted the best USY convention of the year, orchestrated a Broadway production during Shabbat services, traveled to Israel, started a fan club for a mildly famous Jewish musician (ask me about getting your very own Noah Aronson t-shirt!) and so much more. More importantly, they have led by example and formed relationships with younger students to make sure that the strong chapter they helped create continues to grow and thrive. They ve had quite a run and I can t wait to see what they do next! And to all the middle children out there, don t let the world get you down. Bilu has changed USY just by embracing who they are wacky, misunderstood and happy. If Bill Gates and Bilu USY can rise above it, then so can you!
