3 An Inclusive Israel by Rabbi Steven Abraham In a little under a month I will be traveling to Israel as a delegate of the Mercaz Slate in the 37th World Zionist Congress. Five years ago I had the honor of being a delegate and I have to admit that I did not appreciate the importance or the history of what was taking place. Now, five years removed and once again deeply appreciative and humbled by the ability to serve as a delegate, I have come to realize the importance of the work being done by Mercaz - and in extension, the World Zionist Congress. For those who do not know, The World Zionist Congress is a representative organization of the Jewish people that wields substantial control over three key institutions with significant assets at their disposal: Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael (Jewish National Fund), which owns some 13 percent of Israel s land; the Jewish Agency for Israel, which deals with immigration and absorption, as well as Zionism education, and has a $475 million annual budget; and the World Zionist Organization. 1 As a delegate on the Mercaz slate (Zionist arm of Conservative Judaism around the world), I have the opportunity to represent Conservative Jewish values at the Congress, and advocate for increased funding for those programs that promote pluralism and equality in the State of Israel. Theodor Herzl convened the First Zionist Congress in 1897 at Basle, long before the Jewish State became a reality. Herzl worked to build a home for the Jewish people, one where they could choose and determine their own destiny. The Congress began by establishing the Jewish National Fund as a means to acquire land upon which the growing number of pioneers could settle. Israel has grown both in size and in stature since it s founding in 1948 and while the land is old, the country is still in its infancy. Today, the State of Israel has a thriving economy, culture and arts, and is the sole bastion of democratic values in the Middle East. Religious pluralism is not catchy and won t make headlines in the New York Times or the Wall Street Journal; nevertheless, it may be the single greatest challenge facing Israel today. Today, while better than it has been, religious power is in the hands of the few and not the many. Control over marriage, divorce, conversion, space at the Western Wall, religious exemptions to the IDF and many more issues are decided without concern or regard for those with opposing views. I understand these issues are not and cannot ever be equated to the existential threat of a nuclear bomb, but don t kid yourself - the clock on these issues is ticking. Thankfully, the World Zionist Congress is the venue for Diaspora Jews to voice their values within the Jewish State, which is why I am so honored to once again represent Mercaz in these meetings. Mercaz is the Zionist arm of Conservative Judaism around the world and the body through which we gain representation in the World Zionist Organization, the Jewish Agency and the Jewish National Fund. That representation translates directly into more than $2,500,000 annually in allocations, program subsidies and services. As a Conservative Jew, I believe in an Israel that is big enough for all streams of Judaism, that is welcoming to men and women, gay or straight, religious or secular. The World Zionist Congress is our chance to shape the Israel of tomorrow. Rabbi Steven Abraham 1 3

4 Men s Club Corner Life & Legacy Shalom and Welcome to Men s Club! As we approach the end of the calendar year, our Life & Legacy As you may have noted in last month's KOL, Men s Club has program takes on a special significance changed our membership policy. All male members of Beth El as we call upon each of our Beth El Synagogue are now officially members of Men s Club. We only Synagogue families to help us ensure ask that you continue to participate in as many programs and that we achieve our challenge goal of events as possible and volunteer when you can, with the ultimate raising $500,000 in new donor goal of building a stronger congregational community. pledges by December 31, In the past, so many of you have pitched in to help with Men's Club programming and have enjoyed attending events that we sponsor. The goal of this change in dues structure is to inspire more of you to step forward and get involved. As most of you know, a large part of our mission is to support the Synagogue in many ways, such as occasionally serving food at BESTT functions, ushering during the High Holy Days, Sukkah construction/break down, the annual Chinese dinner, helping out at the Purim Carnival, and stepping forward to make sure the staff has the support needed to execute quality programming and events. With that said, please consider joining us on October 11 at 8:00 am to help break down the Sukkah. We are not all about work and no play, though! In addition to our service component, the Club also enjoys many social activities where we can just get together for fun and camaraderie. On September 6, we hosted a family friendly evening of Storm Chasers Baseball and fireworks at Werner Park, and on September 20, with Sisterhood, we co-sponsored a family-friendly picnic and kickball game. Our Jews n Brews programs are always a great time to kick back, shoot the breeze, and enjoy a few beers with the guys. This year we will again co-sponsor the annual Dames & Drinks/Jews n Brews at Hazzan and Laurel Krausman s house on October 3 at 8:30 pm for members 21 years of age and older. To those of you who have already stepped forward to volunteer, thank you for your support! For all men in the synagogue community, consider becoming active in the club and participating more often when we host events or put out a call for volunteers. The Synagogue is only as great as we make it. When you volunteer through Men s Club you make our community a better place for everyone. If you have any questions or concerns or would like to volunteer, please contact me directly at theblairs@rocketmail.com or via phone or text at Thank you for your support and best wishes for a healthy and happy New Year! Jason Blair 4 Achievement of this goal will result in our anonymous donor matching this dollar amount with an additional $500,000 commitment to our Life & Legacy program. To date we have received letters of intent from 67 individual donors. We are grateful to each one of these donors for the critical role and the generosity they are providing to ensure the future of our synagogue. A complete listing of our donors is on the Beth El Synagogue website at For more information about becoming a Life & Legacy donor contact Life & Legacy Chair Lloyd Roitstein at Lloyd.roitstein@gmail.com or contact Larry DeBruin at exec@bethel-omaha.org. 5 President s Corner by Joel Rich, President of the Board of Trustees It s fall, the leaves on the trees are starting to change color, and our lives are developing a more routine style. Thanks to Rabbi Abraham and Hazzan Krausman, we all have experienced a meaningful time at the synagogue. While the fall holidays - Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot and Simchat Torah - are now behind us, things at Beth El are not stopping. BESTT and our high school are continuing to help our children to develop stronger ties to Judaism. Whether it's the weekly classes or through our youth groups, there are plenty of opportunities to get better acquainted with Judaism. Junior Congregation meets every Shabbat morning and is a great way for pre-b nai Mitzvah kids to learn about Shabbat morning services and start taking part in them. Our post-b nai Mitzvah kids and our high school youth are great role models and tutors. Please encourage your kids to take part. The successful "Cup of Coffee with God" Shabbat morning service returns on Saturday, October 17. This is a great time to learn more about our services and ask questions about "how" and "why" we do certain things. The snacks available during this service help make for a casual environment to learn. We will also have several opportunities to learn from upcoming Scholars-in-Residence planned over the next several months. Our Shabbat Tables is resuming soon. This provides a chance to get together for Shabbat dinner with other members of the Beth El family. Specifics about this great program can be found on page 8. What better way to enjoy getting to know other congregants and sharing Shabbat? Men's Club and Sisterhood are also hosting a number of events for everyone to participate in. And don't forget, everyone who is a member of Beth El is now automatically a member of our auxiliaries. Please take part in these fun activities. 7 Memories of Sukkot By Eadie Tsabari, Director of Congregational Learning Sukkot is upon us and it happens to be, arguably, my favorite holiday of the year - the holiday of the harvest, the change in the weather, sitting outside and building the Sukkah. My first attempt at building a Sukkah was when I returned to my parents house after becoming more observant in my Jewish practice. I informed my parents that I was going to build a Sukkah and they thought I was crazy! In Omaha? A Sukkah? They refused to help me and told me that I was just wasting my time. I went to the lumber yard and purchased wood and nails, and to the fabric store for burlap. Remember, there was no internet or google to search how to build this structure, and I wasn t married to an engineer at the time either, so I was totally on my own. To make a long story a little longer, I hammered together as best I could, with the help of my disapproving (although about to change his mind) father a pretty good looking Sukkah. Naturally, the next day our cleaning lady called me at work and said that thing in the back yard just blew away when a very strong wind came up, and we had to re-anchor it in the ground. Our Sukkah was decorated beautifully, my mother cooked all of the things she remembered from her childhood, my Chevrutah (group of Jewish friends) came to dinner as our guests, and we celebrated Sukkot for the first time on Page Street. It s such a wonderful memory. While raising my own kids, we always built a Sukkah. The non-jewish neighbor kids would come over and help us decorate (just as cool as a tree in December!), and whether there was rain or wind or even snow, we ate our dinners in the Sukkah. Our Jewish girls scout troop came one year, and relatives and friends from Israel, neighbors and friends always filled our Sukkah. I would cook all of the things that my mother cooked for our Sukkot celebrations. And more memories were created. Today we celebrate Sukkot with friends and sit in the Sukkah here at Beth El. It is wonderful to share with the kids stories of the Ushpizin (the special guests who come and visit), the blessings we say when we shake the Lulav and the Etrog, and - of course - the beautiful décor the children create. What an awesome opportunity to build memories with your kids. What an incredible hands-on learning experience to make Judaism alive right in your back yard. It really makes our kids feel like they, too, are part of The Children of Israel. Why not start a new tradition this year? Get involved. Build a memory. Make being Jewish more than a weekly obligation. Make being Jewish joyful and meaningful - something that our Ushpizin would be proud of. Chag Samayach!
