3 Certainly the most popular aspects of the observance of Hanukkah are celebrated at home: the kindling of candles, playing with dreidels and, my favorite, eating jelly doughnuts and latkes. However, there are significant aspects of the Hanukkah observance that take place in the context of our synagogue services. This is most appropriate, as the miracle of Hanukkah involves the rededication of the ancient Jerusalem temple by the brave band of Maccabees, after it was defiled by the wicked forces of the Seleucid King Antiochus. In addition to adding Hallel, a special collection of psalms, we include a daily Torah reading on Hanukkah which details the original dedication of the Mishkan the portable sanctuary that accompanied our ancestors as they left Egypt for the Promised Land. During the festival of Hanukkah, our prayer book also requires the insertion of the prayer, Al Ha Nissim. Al Ha Nissim, for all of the miracles, is inserted into the Hoda h or thanksgiving section of the Amidah. It is indeed ironic that while this year the festival of Hanukkah coincides with the American holiday of Thanksgiving, our tradition and liturgy require us to give thanks each and every day. The requirement for inclusion of The Miracle of Hanukkah by Hazzan Michael S. Krausman such prayers can be found in the earliest formulation of our liturgy (Talmud Ber. 3:10). As its name suggests, the prayer Al Ha Nissim begins with a general expression of gratitude for all of the miracles, deliverance and salvation God has granted; not only in the days of our ancestors but in our day as well. This introduction begins similar prayers for Purim, and in modern prayer books, Yom Ha Atzmaut, Israel s Independence Day. The unique wording in each Al Ha Nisssim prayer reminds us of the events that lead to the observance of that particular festival. According to Ismar Elbogen, the highly respected authority on Jewish liturgy, the text of Al Ha Nissim for Hanukkah in our Siddur is almost identical to the version first found in one of the earliest known collections of Jewish prayers compiled by the great sage Rav Amram in the 9th century. Elbogen speculates that Al Ha Nissim may have been commissioned by the clan of Matthias the high priest, the heroes of the Hanukkah story. Interestingly, the unnamed author s spin on the tale of Hanukkah is somewhat different than our usual perspective of the miraculous events that are commonly associated with Hanukkah. Although the story is set during the time of Matthias, it is God alone, according to the Al Ha Nissim prayer, who is responsible for vanquishing the evil empire of the Greek Kingdom, passing judgment on the perpetrators of the terrible crime of defiling the Temple and of forcing our ancestors to abandon God s path. Only after this Divine victory, according to our prayer, did God s children return to repair and re-dedicate God s home the Holy Temple. There is no mention of Judah the Maccabee or of the discovery of a cruse of oil that miraculously lasted for eight days. It seems as though the author of Al Ha Nissim wished to underscore the role that God can have in history as well as in our daily lives. Perhaps the lesson we are to learn from Al Ha Nissim is that the real miracle of Hanukkah was that the forces and influences that threatened to assimilate all of the Jews into contemporary culture and abandon any remnant of our heritage were resisted and ultimately vanquished. Indeed, we can learn from this prayer that by maintaining a strong connection to our people, increasing our knowledge and embracing our rich cultural heritage, the miracle that represents Hanukkah can truly take place in our times just as it did in the period of our ancestors. Hanukkah means dedication. Al Ha Nissim reminds us that now is the best time to be inspired by our history and seek to re-dedicate ourselves to insuring a strong and meaningful future for us, for our children and for all of the many generations of Maccabees to come. Hag Urim Sameiach a happy and joyous Hanukkah. Hazzan Michael Krausman Epstein Chapel Remodel to Add Comfort, Beauty to Beth El Cemetery Beth El s Etta and Harold Epstein Family Chapel of Remembrance, located at the synagogue s cemetery on 84th & L Streets, will undergo dramatic changes over the next few months, thanks to the Epsteins sons, Paul, Gary and Steven, and their families. With the desire to give the chapel a warmer feeling for those mourning the loss of a loved one, pews, a podium and artwork will be incorporated, Gary said. Harold and Etta Epstein, who generously funded the building of the chapel in 1999, were delighted to see this project become a reality, Gary said. The brothers agreed that adding the new enhancements would be a wonderful way to honor their parents, and, Gary added, The Epstein family hopes that this will be a good start to the kick-off campaign for the expansion plans for Beth El Cemetery. 3

4 An Island in Time By Eadie Tsabari, Director of Congregational Learning This has been the BESTT year ever, and we are so excited about all of the wonderful things that are happening here at Beth El! BESTT classes are back in full swing now that the holidays are over. Everyone is learning Hebrew in 2 nd - 7 th grades, preparing for B nai Mitzvah, learning the Amidah, and reading the Hebrew alphabet. Our K-1 students are flourishing with activity, learning about the mezuzah, the Shema and V ahaftah prayers, thanking God, and enjoying lessons about the fall holidays and even Hanukkah. Preschoolers have many opportunities to meet new friends and learn at Beth El. Torah Tots is a twice-a-month experience that is fun for our little guys and filled with creative playing and learning. It is a great opportunity for parents to begin the journey of building community for their kids and making Beth El a home away from home for their families. Our newest program for those who come to services on Shabbat morning is Mini- Minyannaires, where tots learn about the Torah portion of the week, say their blessings, sing Shabbat songs and read stories. Everyone is welcome to join. We have already accomplished two Shabbat s Cool experiences. If you missed the Shul-In and the Blessing of the Animals, I can only say we knocked it out of the ball park! The theme was A New Beginning, and we really had a great time. Our USY teens created and implemented our programming, along with our favorite camp counselor, Joe Kahn, who always adds excitement to our activities. We learned about creation, Shabbat and moved right into Noah and the animals using games, art and music. Thank you to all who were involved and participated. Kibbutz Chaverim is our once-a-month social program. This month 42 kids had a blast during an afternoon of bowling. We invited our neighbors from Temple Israel and Beth Israel to join us, and we all had a great time. Our next outing will be November 10 th, when we go skating. Junior Congregation is an opportunity for your students to become leaders. There are requirements for each class regarding attendance. It is a chance for your student to have one-on-one tutoring, practice their Hebrew skills and become part of our Shabbat community. This student-led program is the best way for your student to become comfortable and proficient in leading services. And the list goes on and on. We have wonderful things planned for you in the month of November. Come often and help us to build our Beth El community. Start early and assure that your kids will have a home here at Beth El. We know you are busy and have many choices for your kids. We hope building a strong Jewish identity and having a vibrant Jewish youth group becomes your priority. 5 Fund-Raising Effort to Benefit Beth El Cemetery Expansion With the desire to beautify our cemetery and make it a comfortable, lovely place to reflect and remember our loved ones, Beth El announces a fund-raising mission to fund a cemetery expansion project. With your support and generosity, this new concept will become a reality. The expansion, which will take place on the property west of the Epstein Chapel, will include common areas with benches, barrier-free access to the chapel, a plot directory, pond, green space, widened roads, improved parking, and a new gate for additional access to 84th Street. The cemetery expansion is a huge undertaking, said Rabbi Steven Abraham. The improvements are necessary as we want the cemetery to be a place that exudes warmth. We go to a cemetery to mourn, to remember and to celebrate lives well lived. It is our hope that the expansion and improvements will create an atmosphere for these things to occur. A Note from our Rabbi Dear Beth El Congregants, On Kol Nidre I discussed with you the steps our synagogue has taken regarding the permissibility of certain ritual practices by non-jewish family members. In addition, I spoke about the need for a process so that our congregation could decide whether or not to allow non-jewish family members to be buried at Beth El Cemetery. My plan is to offer two classes (each class will be offered twice, to accommodate as many people as possible), that will cover the three papers that have been approved by the Conservative Movement s Committee of Jewish Law & Standards (CJLS). Following the last class, there will be a town hall meeting where you are invited to voice your thoughts and concerns to the Beth El Board of Trustees, who will then vote on the issue at a subsequent board meeting. The fundraising target for the cemetery expansion is $1,000,000; numerous giving opportunities and naming opportunities are available. For more information about contributing to the project, contact Larry DeBruin at exec@bethel-omaha.org. One of the most urgent needs of a Jewish community, once it has been established, is the building of a cemetery, said Rabbi Abraham. Our parents and grandparents fulfilled their obligation to Beth El and now the responsibility of making our cemetery a place that lasts for future generations is in our hands. 5 The first class will be offered on Thursday, November 7, at 7 p.m., OR on Sunday, November 10, at 10 a.m. The second class will be offered on Thursday, November 14, at 7 p.m., OR Sunday, November 17, at 10 a.m. The town hall meeting is scheduled for Monday, December 9, at 7 p.m. The link to the three CJLS papers can be found at our website, B vracha (with blessings), Rabbi Steven Abraham Our Shabbat Tables Kicks Off New Season Our Shabbat Tables, Beth El s home-based Shabbat celebrations, will begin its new season on Friday, November 1, and we re excited to share another year of meaningful and fun-filled celebrations with everyone in our congregation! Our Shabbat Tables was established to make a special Shabbat connection among families, couples and individuals by bringing them together for festive Shabbat meals at fellow congregants homes. Based on shared demographics and interests, the synagogue will match people to meet for four Shabbat meals (three dinners and one lunch) during a three-month time frame. Three to four couples or families, or six to eight individuals, will be matched up. Groups will be mixed up from month to month, to allow everyone to become acquainted with as many participants as possible. You may sign up to participate as a guest or a host. Beth El will provide the main course, side dishes and Shabbat tools, while each participant will provide one item: juice, wine, challah, fruit, salad, etc. (Hosts will coordinate with guests.) Upcoming Our Shabbat Tables meals are planned for Friday, November 22 (dinner); Saturday, December 14 (lunch); and Friday, January 24 (dinner). Over 110 congregants have signed up so far, and we re still accepting registrations, so sign up today at For more information, contact OST chairman Caryn Scheer at carynscheer@yahoo.com. Our Shabbat Tables has been made possible by a generous grant from the Herbert Goldsten Trust of the Jewish Federation of Omaha.

6 Youngsters in our Torah Tots class, along with their parents, enjoyed a fun-filled session last month, including an up-close look at the synagogue s ark and Torahs, guided by Hazzan Krausman. November USY Activities: Calendar Planning Day Sunday, November 3 All Kadima and USY members, as well as any Beth El member who would like to plan a program, is welcome to drop in to the youth lounge from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., or 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., to share their ideas. Lunch at the Star Deli (for students on fall break) Friday, November 8, 12:00 p..m No RSVPs or advance ordering are necessary; parents are welcome to join us! Kinnus Convention Julia Edelstein, Alyssa Cohen and Sam Lieb were among the USY teens and Kadimaniks who enjoyed an afternoon in October picking apples at Ditmar s Orchard in Council Bluffs. November 28 - December 1 Our USY teens are excited for their upcoming Kinnus convention in Kansas City, planned for November 28 December 1, and for the November 27 lock-in/overnight at the synagogue to kick off the weekend! If you haven t yet signed up, it s not too late to register and join in the fun. To sign up, visit for more information, contact Betsy Goodman at betsy4589@gmail.com, or

7 President s Corner Dear Congregants, I am truly proud and not surprised at the participation and involvement of our congregants, not only at Beth El, but also in our community helping our neighbors. The word is out how engaged and fantastic our congregation is! Recently, our USY group, under the leadership of President Alyssa Cohen, hosted an interfaith program with the Second Unitarian Church s youth group, and from that gathering, a seed has been planted for future joint programming. Our dedicated staff and volunteers spent a morning volunteering at the Food Bank, led by Cheryl Lerner. Our involvement at the Stephen Center, Habitat for Humanity, and Nebraska AIDS Project are other very meaningful and valuable projects. And of course, the recent Sukkah Hop was also an opportunity for our congregants to celebrate with our Jewish community and have a good time. Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow. Personally, I give thanks to our Beth El staff, board, committees, volunteers, and congregants who make OUR Beth El so meaningful to us. Wishing you a blessed Thanksgiving, and may the glow and warmth of the menorah fill your heart and home with joy. Happy Hanukkah! Chaverweb will also enable us to provide our congregants with an online membership directory. The online directory will include the same information that we have listed in our published directory: your name, address and phone number. This information will only be viewable by other members of the congregation. No other personal information will be available without your authorization. This new program will allow us to stay connected and current as a congregation. Feel free to direct any questions about this exciting new program to Larry DeBruin at or at exec@bethel-omaha.org. If you prefer not to use Chaverweb please let us know. The synagogue office will make paper copies of the membership roster available upon request.
